We hope y'all are having a wonderful holiday season! πŸŽ„

πŸ₯° We wanted to share some pet safety tips from Thrive Pet Healthcare to keep in mind this festive season. 🐢😻

πŸ–± Click here to learn more about holiday safety for your pets: https://www.thrivepetcare.com/thrive-guide/holidays-with-your-pets

🐾 Not all tasty food is for pets! Some common ingredients can be toxic to pets, such as garlic, onions, grapes, raisins, chocolate, xylitol, and foods high in fat.

🐾 Holiday plants like poinsettias, lilies, holly, and mistletoe can be toxic to cats if ingested. Make sure to keep these out of reach!

🐾 Spending time with friends and family is always fun, but our pets may not feel comfortable with strangers in their home. Make sure to keep them in a space where they are comfortable and calm if they are not feeling friendly.

Dr. Nyquist is giving her audience the whole "tooth" about dental extractions! πŸ˜‚

🦷 Dr. Markay Nyquist, our board-certified veterinary dentist and oral surgeon, taught a continuing education course on dental extractions for our community of referring veterinarians. Afterward, they were armed to the teeth with tips, tools and techniques for handling complicated tooth extractions in dogs and cats! 🐢

Heart of Texas offers continuing education for our amazing veterinary community throughout the year. These events are led by our specialists or licensed veterinary technicians. πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈπŸ‘¨β€βš•οΈπŸ“–

Hey y'all, meet this resilient girl, Luna! 🐢πŸ’ͺ

Sadly, Luna was shot in the face at close range. Dad rushed her to an emergency hospital where she was triaged and stabilized overnight, then referred to Heart of Texas to see our Board-Certified Veterinary Dentistβ„’. 🦷

🩺 Dr. Nyquist performed a Fear Free exam and shared treatment options with Luna's dad. Advanced imaging showed that the bullet had hit Luna's upper canine tooth first, then shattered and lodged into her lower jaw bone.

Dr. Nyquist and her team were able to surgically remove many of the largest bullet fragments, repair the damaged tissue, and place a wire and composite splint to stabilize the jaw so that it would heal. Composite is the same material used for tooth fillings in humans.

😰 This was a very complex injury and it was uncertain if the shattered jaw bone would heal without complications. Luna's dad followed all the care instructions that Dr. Nyquist provided, and the jaw fracture healed! ❀

🦷 Luna was able to keep normal alignment between her teeth. The splint was removed several weeks after surgery, along with some residual tooth roots from the fracture site. Luna also required root canal therapy on a lower canine tooth which had died from the nearby trauma and inflammation, and an extraction of the fractured upper canine tooth that sustained the initial blow from the bullet. Like human teeth, some pet teeth can have root canals performed to preserve them and avoid extraction.

🐾 Luna still has two more weeks of wet food (yum!) and another recheck before she can return to her normal activities.

πŸ₯° Thank you to Luna's dad for letting our incredible dentistry and oral surgery team care for her!

πŸ¦ƒ With Thanksgiving next week, we wanted to share some safety tips, courtesy of our friends at Trupanion. 🍰

🐾 Sharing the holidays with family is always fun, but make sure your pets don't get out when your guests are coming in!

🐾 Thanksgiving is a holiday where a lot of the food contains ingredients that could be toxic or harmful to pets. Make sure you aren't sharing holiday food with them!

πŸ§‘πŸ–€ It's almost Halloween! πŸ–€πŸ§‘

Check out some of the safety reminders for your pets from our friends at Trupanion.

πŸŽƒ Candy and other treats that contain xylitol are very toxic for dogs.

πŸŽƒ Opening the door to greet trick-or-treaters might give your pets a chance to escape, so make sure they are wearing ID.

πŸŽƒ If you are getting your pets into the spirit with a costume, make sure it's a comfortable fit and doesn't have pieces they can easily chew on.

πŸŽƒ Lit jack-o-lantern candles and pets don't mix. Keep your fur babies away from open flame! πŸ”₯

We hope y'all have a safe and happy Halloween! We will be open 24/7 if you need us!
