Looking for some fun things to do with your dog? Check out these sampler classes being offered at Fit N Trim Dogsport Training. This is a great way to see if you and your pup might like a particular activity without committing to a full session.

Read closely as they do have prerequisites for signing up.

Training and dog sports are a great way to build your relationship with your dog and to keep their mind active. "Brain work" can be more tiring than walks and ball chasing for many dogs.

Happy training!

Today is Veteran's Day. The staff at Rowley Animal Hospital extends a thank you to all who have dedicated themselves to service to our country. Thank you to the military families as well. Thinking of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

Dr. DiBoot has been taking a few of her dogs to scent classes. This year she started competing in scent work trials with Trudy Roo. Yesterday, Trudy demonstrated her super sniffer by placing in 4 out of 6 classes! That's quite a nose!

Scent work is a fun sport for dogs and their humans. It involves teaching dogs to find different scents (birch, anise, and clove). As dogs advance in their training the searches become more complex. It's a great way for dogs to do an activity that uses their natural instincts and to have to think. Brain stimulation is such a great way for a dog to burn energy, even better than going running or chasing a ball! It also builds a great human/ dog partnership as the handler needs to learn to read their dog's behavior to know when the dog has found the scent (referred to as a hide) they are looking for. Going to classes can also help some shy dogs build up their confidence.

Thumper was a perfect patient for his first kitten visit! Thumper is a 12 week old ragdoll who was getting his well baby exam as he was recently brought to his new home. He did great!

When acquiring a new kitten (or any new pet) it is advisable to have a check up within the first week of owning them. Many rescue groups and breeders will require an exam within 72 hours of pick up.

When you bring your new kitten in for it's first visit with us we will ask you to bring all paperwork you have on the kitten which will let us know what vaccines and dewormings it's had (if any). We will also ask you to bring a fresh f***l sample so we can have it examined for parasites. During our exams Dr. DiBoot will look your kitten over, checking eyes, ears, mouth, feeling their belly, and thoroughly listening to heart and lungs. She is making sure eyes and ears look clear of any debris, feeling the belly for umbilical hernia or other abnormalities, and checking the heart for murmurs or abnormal rhythm.

Vaccines for kittens are given on a particular schedule to help build their immunity. Core vaccines are feline distemper (FVRCP) and rabies. FVRCP is given at 8,12, and 16 weeks of age. Rabies is given at a minimum of 12 weeks. Rabies is a vaccine required to be given by state law and must be given by a licensed veterinarian. An optional vaccine is feline leukemia (FeLV). It is strongly recommended for outdoor cats. For indoor cats it's recommended to give the initial booster series then again in one year then it does not need continued as their risk is lower but they will have some protection in case the get out by accident.

All kittens should be tested for feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus, especially if they were strays or raised outside.

Typically kittens adopted through a rescue or shelter will have had those blood tests and at least their first vaccines. They are very often spayed/ neutered as well. Adoption fees cover all of these treatments.

You can certainly book an appointment before you bring your kitty home so give us a call if you're planning a new member for your family! We love seeing new kittens 😸 😍

Black cats have long been victims of negative superstitions, especially around Halloween. This has resulted in them being harmed as well as a reduction in adoptions. Did you know that there are many positive superstitions around them as well?
In Scotland a black cat showing up on your doorstep is a sign of prosperity.
British sailors believed that a black cat on board a ship would bring good luck and ensure a safe passage.
Ancient Egyptians worshipped cats in general but black cats were considered protectors against evil spirits.
If you own a black cat consider yourself lucky!!

Misty is looking for a home! Misty is 15 years young and her owner died in 2021, leaving her to fend for herself. A good Samaritan fed Misty when she would come by, but noticed one day she was drooling and she grew agitated when he tried to wipe her face. Out of concern for rabies, Misty was brought to us by her local animal control officer. We found Misty had a large wound on her tongue that had caused pain and drooling. Her tongue has since healed and she will soon be ready for a new home. Misty is VERY sweet. She will be vaccinated and have a dental procedure and cardiology assessment before adoption (she has a small heart murmur). Her lab work was normal except that Misty does have FIV, feline immunodeficiency virus. This virus is unlikely to cause her problems and is transmissible to other cats through bite wounds. It would be best for Misty to be an only cat for this reason, or to live in a home with another FIV positive cat. We are unsure at this time how Misty feels about other cats, but dogs do make her nervous. Misty was hungry when she got here and wore her food all over her face!

Summer is a great time to spend quality time adventuring with your pets! Dr. DiBoot took her pup, Trudy, on a kayak adventure recently. Summer is also a time of year where your pets are at increased risks of contracting certain diseases, like heartworm disease, tick born diseases like Lyme, and leptospirosis. Make sure your pups are up to date on their Lyme and leptospirosis vaccinations before they journey outdoors and ensure they are given their monthly preventatives, such as Nexgard Plus, to protect from diseases transmitted by bugs!

Welcoming Dr. DiBoot

Dr. Danielle DiBoot and her husband, Matt, are the proud new owners of Rowley Animal Hospital! Dr. DiBoot has over 15 years of experience in the veterinary field and significant experience treating not only dogs and cats, but exotic animals, including parrots, chickens and other poultry, reptiles and amphibians, and small mammals, like rabbits and guinea pigs. The DiBoots are originally from Sudbury, Massachusetts and have spent the last 5 years in central Florida. They moved home to Massachusetts to pursue practice ownership and are excited to get to know the families and their pets of the North Shore.

Dr. Marilyn Hayes and her husband, Steve, ran the Rowley Animal Hospital for almost 30 years and Dr. DiBoot and Matt are keeping the tradition of a family run hospital alive in a time many hospitals are selling to large corporations.
