We are often asked about ordering medications online. People are always looking for lower prices, however online options are not safe. If it's a price that seems unbelievable there's a good chance there's a reason why. Counterfeit products are out there and can be a danger to your pets. Purchase only through your veterinarian or sources that they give you to ensure you are receiving proper products.

Reptiles and birds need special considerations through the winter. Don't forget to watch out for them as temps drop.

We've spent this week highlighting tips to keep pets safe this winter. But furry friends aren't the only ones who need special attention when the temps dip.
Reptiles need a heat source so be sure there's a backup in case of power outages. Birds can be sensitive to fumes so be sure there's adequate ventilation from heat sources.

Ever wonder why we stress the importance of using an E collar after a surgery? A pet licking an incision can cause delayed healing or worse, cause an infection that could become costly to correct. The "cone of shame " is an inconvenience, sure, but dealing with it for a couple of weeks is much better than having an infection that lasts even longer. This is especially important with orthopedic surgeries as licking at an incision can introduce bacteria that finds its way to the bone. Infection of the bone can mean more surgical procedures or could ultimately lead to the loss of a leg if things don't go well which no one wants to deal with.
So, when you're given instructions to have your pet wear a cone, know that it is in your pet's best interest to have a fast and full recovery.

As the holiday season begins, people start thinking of gifts and often animals are considered. Please, do not give animals a gifts for the holidays without taking in some serious consideration.
Does the person the gift is intended for really want that animal?
Is the person capable of caring for the animal for its natural life?
Is the animal going to be in the best situation?
While animals are gifted with the best of intentions, often times the situation ends up not being a good fit and the animal is given to a shelter or, worse, abandoned.
Puppies are an enormous responsibly that not everyone is ready to deal with. They require training and supervision and not everyone is prepared for that level of commitment. Giving one to a child seems wonderful but the parents must be prepared to assist in that care as well as the expense.
Kittens also require a lot of supervision and can be highly active and get into mischief that people don't always realize.
Smaller animals such as rabbits, birds, and reptiles have care needs that may be more than realized.

Please, before bringing any animal into a home do extensive research on the care the animal requires. Be sure the intended owner is capable in all ways of providing for the needs of that animal, especially financially.

Misty is looking for a home! Misty is 15 years young and her owner died in 2021, leaving her to fend for herself. A good Samaritan fed Misty when she would come by, but noticed one day she was drooling and she grew agitated when he tried to wipe her face. Out of concern for rabies, Misty was brought to us by her local animal control officer. We found Misty had a large wound on her tongue that had caused pain and drooling. Her tongue has since healed and she will soon be ready for a new home. Misty is VERY sweet. She will be vaccinated and have a dental procedure and cardiology assessment before adoption (she has a small heart murmur). Her lab work was normal except that Misty does have FIV, feline immunodeficiency virus. This virus is unlikely to cause her problems and is transmissible to other cats through bite wounds. It would be best for Misty to be an only cat for this reason, or to live in a home with another FIV positive cat. We are unsure at this time how Misty feels about other cats, but dogs do make her nervous. Misty was hungry when she got here and wore her food all over her face!

Welcoming Dr. DiBoot

Dr. Danielle DiBoot and her husband, Matt, are the proud new owners of Rowley Animal Hospital! Dr. DiBoot has over 15 years of experience in the veterinary field and significant experience treating not only dogs and cats, but exotic animals, including parrots, chickens and other poultry, reptiles and amphibians, and small mammals, like rabbits and guinea pigs. The DiBoots are originally from Sudbury, Massachusetts and have spent the last 5 years in central Florida. They moved home to Massachusetts to pursue practice ownership and are excited to get to know the families and their pets of the North Shore.

Dr. Marilyn Hayes and her husband, Steve, ran the Rowley Animal Hospital for almost 30 years and Dr. DiBoot and Matt are keeping the tradition of a family run hospital alive in a time many hospitals are selling to large corporations. The DiBoots are on a mission to treat their clients and pets like family! Come on down to Rowley Animal Hospital and meet Dr. DiBoot and Matt!
