It is with great sadness that we share that on Sunday August 18th, our practice manager Dorothy Laterreur lost her long battle with cancer. She was a loving, strong and fiercely capable veterinary technician & manager, whose career started in ER hospitals and general practice. She later transitioned into management, with a dream of one day running her own hospital. She gave her all to the job, no matter where she was working, somehow managing to battle stage 4 breast cancer for many years while working full-time as a practice manager. Dorothy joined our team only a couple of years ago, but her impact was enormous. She taught our management team so much about human resources, client care and business management. We will be forever grateful that she joined our team when she did. Our hearts go out to her husband Gill, son Karl and the rest of her family. Sleep well, dear Dorothy. You are missed.

2:15PM UPDATE: Thank you all for your understanding today! We should be back to normal on Monday. Have a good weekend!

8:26AM UPDATE: Some things are back up and running, but our phones are in and out. If you try to call and can’t hear us, that is why. We’ll continue to update.

RAC CLIENTS! Our internet is down due to a Spectrum outage and therefore until it is up, our phones will be down, our computers, and our ability to take card payments. We are still here for our regularly scheduled day (8:00-1:00), so if you have a regularly scheduled appointment, you can still come. If you have to pay by card, we will need to take your card number down and process it later. We do not know when it will be back up again, so if you need us, you can to try to call, but please be patient with us if our phones are still down. We will post an update when we are back up again. Thank you for your understanding.

Baby Sunny is very excited for his meloxicam treat! (But read more!)

Sunny and his brothers were castrated using the burdizzo method, also called “pinching” or “crushing.” A tool known as a burdizzo is used to crush both spermatic cords. His testicles will then get smaller over the next couple months and be absorbed in to his body. This method tends to be very popular because it’s not very invasive, recovery is very quick, and there isn’t a concern with flies as there is with surgery or banding sites.

There are some very important considerations for Sunny now that he is a wether (castrated goat). Sunny now has an increased risk of urolithiasis which can cause a urinary blockage that can develop at any point later in life. This is a very dangerous situation if it occurs, and while some treatment is possible, often the prognosis is poor. The good news for Sunny is that there are risk factors that his owner can avoid!
-The biggest risk factor is diet. NO GRAIN for Sunny!
-It doesn’t matter if the grain has ammonium chloride or if he loves it so much.
-No alfalfa or goat treats with alfalfa in it.
-Sunny should always have access to plenty of fresh water.
-Sunny should maintain a good weight and not get too fat.

With these measures, thankfully Sunny’s chances of developing urolithiasis/a urinary blockage are very low, and he can live a wonderful life with his owner and the rest of his goat herd.

We are excited to announce that a sixth veterinarian is joining our practice in just under two weeks!

Dr. Lingna Horton is originally from Vermont, where she completed her undergraduate degree in Animal Science at the University of Vermont in 2019. In 2023, Dr. Horton graduated from Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine where she was trained in the medical and surgical care of large and small animals. She then moved to Reno, NV for a rigorous one-year rotating internship in mixed large animal medicine and surgery at Comstock Equine Hospital. At Comstock, she received advanced training in equine & farm animal medicine, dentistry and field surgery and is excited to bring these skills to the clients at RAC, and to resume working with small animal patients. Dr. Horton will be available for appointments starting August 6th. Equine dentistry services with Dr. Horton will be available starting mid-September 2024.

One of the things that makes Roxbury Animal Clinic unique is that we are a mixed animal practice. This means that we not only see small animals (cats and dogs), but also large animals such as cows, horses, goats, sheep, etc. Some of you already know that we do farm/house calls. A lot of people assume that we just see large animals on farms and small animals in the clinic, but did you know we have large animals trailered in to the clinic? We also see small animals on farm/house calls! We see anything anywhere! (Some restrictions apply.)

Pop quiz answer: You guessed it! Those gross wiggly worms were heartworms in their larval stage in a blood sample. In adulthood, heartworms can be a foot long and live in the host’s heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels eventually causing severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to other organs. Treatment is very involved and expensive and carries risks. The best thing pet owners can do is to be up to date on their heartworm prevention.

There are a few myths we hear when having this discussion in the clinic.
- “This is a southern thing. We don’t see heartworm up north.” While it is much more common in the south, we are seeing rising cases here in the north. Our clinic has several active heartworm cases we are treating.
- “I spray my yard. My dog really doesn’t go anywhere, so I don’t need to use heartworm prevention.” Heartworm is transmitted via mosquito. If there are mosquitos, there is a potential for your dog to get it.

We get it. It can be hard to remember to give your pet their dose. There are several heartworm prevention options from a monthly oral chew that also covers fleas and ticks to an annual injection. Give us a call or chat with us at your next appointment about what option may be best for you.

The 4th of July is almost here! While this can be a great day of celebration with your family, some elements of how we celebrate can be stressful for the furry members of our family. Here are some things we recommend:
-Don’t wait until Wednesday to pick up your calming medications for your pets who need them. Call early and pick them up early so we can make sure you have them in hand for the 4th. Remember we are closed on the 4th.
-Fireworks are stressful. Do not bring your pets to events or parties where there are fireworks.
-Keep your pets leashed at all times if outside, and try not to leave your pets unattended. There is a 30-60% increase in lost pets each year.
-Keep your pets busy with interactive and enrichment toys.
-Try to muffle the sound or try a thunder shirt.
-Comfort your pets, and create a space for them where they can feel safe.

FYI for all RAC clients:
From mid-March until early August, two of our veterinarians will be taking temporary family leave – at different but back-to-back times. So, in that time frame, we will be short by one veterinarian. As such, while we will always do our utmost to accommodate client schedules and be available for emergency situations, there may be times we simply do not have the staff available, and we will need to refer you elsewhere. Please know that this is only something we will do if necessary and in the best interest of your pets and livestock. We are in the process of hiring additional veterinarians, but they will not be available to start until mid-summer. We appreciate your understanding and your continued loyalty to our practice.

There has been a surge in cases of an unknown canine respiratory illnesses in recent months throughout the US. Currently, a definitive cause for these infections has not been found. If you notice your dog coughing, sneezing or acting unwell, please call us. At this time we are recommending avoiding areas where groups of dogs gather, such as dog parks.
