I couldn’t help myself…even on vacation if I see an owner struggling I’m going to stop and offer advice. Annie is a 9-month-old miniature Australian Shepherd with a senior owner struggling with the pup’s excitability and energy needs. I gave her a few tips which hopefully will assist.

SKIPPY IS LOOKING FOR HIS FOREVER HOME!
Skippy had a rough start in life. He was pulled from a shelter in California where he was scheduled to be euthanized. Two attempts at adoption failed -both only giving him 3 days or less to acclimate. His current fosters reached out to us for some basic obedience training to help ensure that Skippy finds the home he deserves. Skippy has had 4 training sessions focusing on recall, leash manners, home manners (jumping, door rushing), and reactivity. He is a young, energetic pup that would thrive in a home with someone active who will take him on adventures. He crates and rides in the car well. He has improved greatly on his recall and leash manners and loves to play bungee tug. He has been working on a place stay to resolve initial barking and running at the door when strangers enter. He is eager to please when he understands what is expected and showed great progress in 1 home session working on this, so with consistent training this will be resolved. He is approximately 1 year old and 23lbs with a fantastic temperament. Skippy’s breed mix is unknown but suspect some terrier or spaniel due to strong digging urge. Having spent most of his life in a cage at shelters, Skippy does bark at unexpected noises. He now recalls to the foster once the barking begins, so with continued exposure, socialization, and training this tendency will decrease but may always be present to some degree due to his breed mix. Skippy initially showed some reactivity (barking, pulling) when passing other reactive dogs but through training he now calmly walks past with gentle verbal guidance. Future training sessions will focus on calmly walking past approaching people, as this happy guy does show a desire to greet when someone walks past at a close proximity. Skippy is a great little pup who would make a fantastic companion. Can we find him a home before Christmas? Skippy is being fostered in Yelm, Washington and is available for adoption through Gurrs and Purrs Rescue.

I’ve been getting a lot of messages asking about Amarok’s retirement, so I’m taking a moment to educate on the training and life of service dogs. As everyone who saw last night’s reel knows, the amazing Prince Amarok has been officially retired from public access as a service dog. For those unfamiliar with service retirement, service dogs this size generally retire between the ages of 8-10 assuming good health. This is because the dog should be allowed to age gracefully in the home and not have the added stressors on the body that tasking requires once the dog is at an age where things like arthritis and other age-related conditions begin to present.

In general, most service dog training (obedience, public access, and task training related to the disability) occurs over an 18-24 month period. Amarok’s journey was a bit different. My prior service dog and company name sake Tsar Kovas lost his battle with cancer 9 days after Amarok was brought into the home as a service prospect. It was my hope and intention that Kovas would be able to assist Amarok in his training journey, but upon finding out that Kovas’s cancer had spread to his stomach, I made the difficult but compassionate decision to set Kovas free from his pain. This faced me with a situation where I no longer had the assistance of a service dog, which at the time was necessary for my ability to safely drive. As a result, Amarok’s training was accelerated and he completed all of his requirements in 10 months.

Amarok passed his public access test within days of his first birthday, meaning he was working as a full time service dog at the age many service prospects are beginning their public access training. Just like police and military K9s, service work takes a toll on the dog, so paired with his accelerated training Amarok needed to retire early at age 6. He will of course remain at home with me, canine pack leader of the 7-dog household. I have been transitioning him towards retirement for the past year, and Vhagar will now serve as full time service dog. For now, Amarok will continue to task at home if needed, as there are a few tasks he provides that I have not yet taught Vhagar. And he will of course be giving his own opinion on my landscaping choices, as shown in this photo 😂

Attention Clients/Prospective Clients: The website has been updated to reflect some pricing and program changes for 2025. Please check out the Services tab on the website https://www.kovaslegacyllc.com for a full description. Key highlights to point out: 1) Agility and Urban Mushing sessions are increasing to $100 to account for equipment repair/replacement 2) Obedience and Behavioral Modification sessions will be the same rate ($125/hour) 3) Multi-dog households will have an additional $15 per dog charge added to each session 4) Mileage Tiers are going away and sessions away from KL Headquarters will be charged the hourly rate for travel time. The mileage tiers simply don’t cover a fraction of the vehicle maintenance and time involved driving to/from locations. THESE CHANGES IMPACT ALL CLIENTS, NOT JUST NEW CONTRACTS
