The Golden Bark Foundation

The Golden Bark Foundation The Golden Bark foundation is a senior dog rescue located in Utah. Foster based and volunteer ran! We plan to rescue and find homes for these senior dogs.

GBF’S MISSION

The Golden Bark Foundation is dedicated to rescuing and advocating for at-risk senior dogs, fulfilling their immediate needs and sending them off to a love filled retirement home. We focus on rescuing senior dogs because they are often forgotten and cast aside at the point in their lives when they need the most care. When they end up in shelters, people prefer to adopt younger dogs

that require less care and maintenance with fuller lives ahead. They deserve to know love in the latter portions of their life. Every dog deserves a home to live out their golden years.

🌟 Meet Kristen, Our Foster Coordinator! 🌟

Kristen joined The Golden Bark Foundation as a volunteer in early 2024, driven by her passion for helping dogs. She began by assisting with transport, and during her very first trip—bringing two dogs to HQ—she fell in love with one of them. That dog became her first foster... and her forever family member ❤️

Kristen’s dedication didn’t stop there. Whether it was driving 45 minutes to assist with senior visits or lending a hand with transport, Kristen proved time and again her commitment to our mission. She wanted to be a part of the incredible work this rescue does, and it shows.

After reviewing several strong candidates for the Foster Coordinator role, we knew Kristen was the perfect fit. Since stepping into this position, she’s been nothing short of amazing. From coordinating vet appointments to delivering supplies and supporting our fosters, Kristen goes above and beyond to ensure our dogs—and the people who care for them—have everything they need.

The role of Foster Coordinator is vital to any rescue, and we are so grateful to have Kristen leading the way. She truly puts the dogs first, and her compassion and hard work make a huge impact every day.

🎉 Happy 11th Birthday to our boy, Max! 🎂🐾

Max is one of the permanent residents of our rescue. He joined us on January 20th, 2023 after his family faced housing challenges and had to surrender him. While we were told he was great with everyone and everything, Max turned out to have his own unique quirks.

Max struggles with severe reactivity to large dogs, absolutely dreads car rides, and doesn’t handle change well. After being available for adoption for quite some time, we ultimately felt it was best for Max to stay with us as “hospice” due to his behavioral needs and challenges.

Since then, Max has been living his absolute best life! We’ve learned to manage his triggers, and he’s become so much calmer and happier in his safe, predictable environment.

Here’s to celebrating Max and all his unique ways—Happy Birthday, big boy! 💖🐕

Enjoy Bosley and his weekend adventure with his foster family!

Bosley is doing great! He loves going on walks and has even learned to use the dog door. At first, we thought he wasn’t potty trained, but it turned out he had a UTI. Now that he’s on antibiotics, he’s feeling much better and hasn’t had any accidents!

The only thing left for Bosley is his dental, and then he’ll be ready for adoption!

✨ Meet Paul – Volunteer Coordinator ✨

Paul joined our rescue family as a volunteer back in April, driven by a dream of one day starting his own rescue dedicated to huskies. He came to us eager to help in any way he could, and we put him to work digitizing two years’ worth of files—a task that he tackled with enthusiasm. From there, Paul continued to show up, event after event, ready to lend a hand wherever he was needed.

Paul’s dedication, loyalty, and passion stood out from day one. Last year alone, he volunteered at nearly 70% of our events, always stepping in without hesitation whenever someone couldn’t make their shift.

When it was time to pass the torch for this role, we knew Paul was the perfect fit. With his professional experience in leadership and his deep love for dogs, he’s sure to make an incredible impact as our Volunteer Coordinator.

Cheers to another adoption in January!

Sweet Dolly came to us back in November as an owner surrender. Her family took her in when she was just a few years old.

But with life changes and multiple flights a month, they made a hard decision. They didn't want to put Dolly through the stress of traveling or have to leave her at a boarding facility. Her family felt she deserved more than that, and reached out to GBF.

We know how hard the decision can be to rehome a pet. We appreciate the families that do their research to find their pets the right forever home.

Dolly found a fantastic retirement home with a couple of other doggy and human siblings. She is very spoiled, as all dogs should be!

Happy retirement to the happiest girl out there! Keep dancing, Dolly!

PART 2

Kitty had been on a gradual decline over the last several weeks. Her muscle tone was weakening, she struggled to stand up and walk straight, and couldn’t hold her head up to eat from her bowl. She would only wake up to eat, drink, or potty. Overall, she wasn’t herself, and clearly getting ready to go. As her caretakers, it’s our responsibility to pay attention to these signs, and help her along so she didn’t suffer, but left with dignity.

We made the decision on Friday to bring her in on Monday, for her, and for us, to have a few more days to be filled with the best food, all the comforts she enjoyed, and all the affection she would allow us to give her. Kitty made it clear in those days that she was ready. She struggled to eat even chicken, needed assistance to drink water, and generally seemed disoriented. It was the reassurance we wanted to ensure we were making the right decision, so we kept her as comfortable as we could.

We celebrated her 20th birthday on Sunday. She got so close, she was practically 20. We don’t know what her life was like before us or why she tried to bite (she had no teeth, so gum) every time you picked her up. But we’re thankful that we got to be her last stop. We’re grateful we had the opportunity to provide her a loving and comfortable home, and ultimately guide her out of this world safely and with dignity.

She left this world in my arms. The same person that picked her up from the shelter when she came to our rescue.

When she passed, my partner reminded me that this is exactly why we started the rescue. To give them all a chance to live out their golden years with dignity, patience, compassion and love. No matter what they’ve been through in the past, whether they grew up with love and support, or fear and neglect, every dog deserves to be cared for and loved until the very end. Even though it seemed like kitty didn’t love anyone, we sure loved her. The house will never be the same without her.

Kitty, thanks for gracing the world with your presence. I know we are not the only ones who will be grieving and missing you. Rest easy to our GBF queen, 20 years was not enough.

Yesterday we said goodbye to our Kitty.

PART 1

Kitty was a fierce dog. She had so much attitude in that 8 lb body of hers. She was loud, she was very resilient, and had so many silly quirks. When she first came to our house she would bark in the middle of the night and after many loud sleepless nights, we figured out she wanted to sleep on the couch. But sometimes in her slumber, she would jump off to wander and fall asleep in another bed. So we prepped a section of the couch to be hers for bedtime and a bunch of pillows on the ground for whenever she’d inevitably jump off. After some time, she decided she didn’t want to do that anymore, so we switched up her bedtime routine. We ended up having to do that a few times.

Kitty wasn’t not potty trained. We tried to have her wear diapers at first, but after a short time, she hated them and would fight when we tried putting them on. So she went diaper less, just like she wanted. That meant constantly putting her outside and cleaning up after her. But she also hated being outside! Warm weather, cold weather, she couldn’t be pleased! She was very hard headed that girl. Whenever we put her outside, she would run up the stairs, through the dog door, and right back in the house. She was so fast!

Kitty used to visit senior homes with us. She did quite well until one day she decided she didn’t want to be held and cuddled, so we let her stay home. We never wanted to push her to do something against her boundaries. That’s what it was like to care for her, constantly learning what new boundary she had for us. We adjusted time after time. We did laundry every single day because of her, changed her feeding routine quite a lot. Whatever the queen wanted she got. Safe to say she ran this house. The girl had been on this earth for 19 years, she deserved to live it how ever she pleased.

Exciting Update for 2025 Volunteers!

With the new year, we’re introducing a new system to streamline our volunteer events! Going forward, we’ll be using the Point app to organize all volunteer opportunities. This will help us track hours and create a smoother experience for both our team and our amazing volunteers.

Later this week, our volunteer coordinator will be sending an email with instructions on how to join our team on the app. Don’t worry—you don’t have to create a profile right away. If you’d prefer to wait until your first event to sign up, that’s totally fine!

We’ll also include our updated volunteer waiver in the email. You’ll need to sign it before your first shift, and it will cover all your volunteer activities with us for the year.

For our returning volunteers, we’re giving you an exclusive perk! Certain events will open for early sign-ups before being made public. That’s another great reason to create your profile as soon as possible!

Stay tuned for our email later this week, and thank you for helping us make this year amazing for our senior dogs! 🐾

UPDATE 1/12: Her neighbor was able to privately rehome her. Thank you everyone for sharing and wanting to help Molly!

📣 We are looking for a foster for this sweet old lady, Molly! 📣
Breed: unknown Age: 10-12

Molly’s owner recently passed away, leaving her alone in the home. Thankfully, a kind and caring neighbor has been stepping in to feed her, let her out, and shower her with love. Unfortunately, Molly’s family doesn’t have a place for her to go, and she’s currently on the shelter’s surrender waitlist. The amazing neighbor has been tirelessly trying to find a rescue to help. She’s also been the one providing all the information on Molly, though it’s limited since she’s not the owner.

Yesterday, Molly had a meet with our available big dog foster. Molly has spent her entire life in a rural area, so the unfamiliar sights, city sounds, and stress of a long car ride made her feel overwhelmed. She nipped at the foster’s dog—not out of aggression, but due to the immense stress and the rapid changes she’s been through. We later found out from the owner’s family that Molly has a hard time with other dogs and can become protective, which wasn’t disclosed to us before the meet.

Despite all this, our foster spent some time with Molly and saw just how incredibly sweet she is. She walks well on a leash, adores people (including kids), and loves attention. She needs a foster home where she can be the only dog. Cats and kids are okay though!

GBF provides all the supplies you’ll need while fostering. We just ask that you provide a loving home and rides to vet appointments.

📄 Our foster application is linked in our bio. Send us a message if you have any questions!

On Monday, the world said goodbye to one of our founding dogs, Ozzy.

Ozzy was found as a stray in Tooele County, but no one came looking for him. Our foster was volunteering at the local shelter, bringing him to our attention. He became the 2nd dog GBF ever took in in October 2022. His foster Zel started to share all about his bubbly personality, cute quirks, and the vast amount of zest he had for life.

Nov 19th, 2022: He attended his first GBF event at a Grizzlies hockey game, where he happily greeted everyone and became a great spokesperson for our new rescue. We had high hopes he might find his forever home. Along came his soon-to-be Dad, Beau. Beau immediately fell in love with him. He returned repeatedly during the game to ask questions and learn more about Ozzy.

The next few months, Ozzy would go on play dates with his Dad, but before he went to his adoption trial, he ended up at the emergency vet with health issues. We found several other health concerns while he was in his adoption trial. Before we adopt our dogs out, we ensure all of their health needs are taken care of, and Ozzy has developed quite a few. With health issues piling up, we decided to keep him permanently in our hospice program.

Ozzy lived a once-in-a-lifetime adventure with his Dad. He went to work with him at a museum where he met many incredible people: astronauts, celebrities, rockstars, governors. To say HE LIVED would be an understatement! Adventures, endless walks, vacations, friends, parks, haunted tours, and I am sure I missed so much!

We are so thankful Ozzy had the endless love, patience, and dedication from his Dad. From day one, Ozzy became his world. And though the world might seem a little less bright without him, we know he lived a life we wish for all of our seniors. His Dad will be writing a eulogy that we will share when he’s ready. Please send The Burgess Family love, light, and prayers.

Ozzy, it was quite an honor to be part of your journey on earth. Thanks for sharing your light with this world; rest easy friend.

Hip hip hooray to our little Pixie Dust on her adoption!

Miss Pixie was found as a stray in Utah County. We hadn’t planned on taking her in, but when I showed up to rescue Gizmo, they mentioned a little senior poodle who also needed help. So, Pixie joined Gizmo in the car, and we made the trip back to HQ together!

Pixie loves everything and everyone—walks, other dogs, cats, and even our rabbit. I grew so attached to her that I cried when I dropped her off with her foster family, all the while debating how I could possibly add another dog to my pack. But I also knew I needed to be realistic.

In her foster home, Pixie’s full personality truly blossomed. She adored physical activity and would race around the dog park with her foster siblings, soaking up every bit of attention. Out of all the dogs her family had fostered, they said Pixie took the medal for being the fastest! Watching her zest for life, you’d never guess she was a senior.

Pixie had some interest from adopters, but once we realized she needed an active home to keep up with her energy, most potential adopters had to pass—many were looking for a laid-back senior, and Pixie is anything but!

When her foster family mentioned the possibility of adopting her, I knew it was the perfect fit. As much as I loved her, I knew she wasn’t meant to be mine—I wouldn’t have been able to give her the active lifestyle she thrives on. She was already home🤍

Happy retirement, Pixie! May you keep shining bright and bringing joy to everyone you meet and your family 🤍

✨Meet Nathanial – Board of Directors ✨

We are thrilled to introduce Nathanial, a remarkable member of our board of directors and a true cornerstone of The Golden Bark Foundation.

Nathanial has been with GBF since the very beginning, playing a pivotal role in turning the dream of starting a senior dog rescue into a reality. Not only did he graciously cover all the legal fees to establish the foundation, but he was also involved in choosing our rescue’s name—a detail that continues to represent our mission and heart.

From day one, Nathanial has poured his energy into every aspect of the rescue, whether it’s event planning, operations, adoptions, intakes, or transport. He’s been the backbone of our gala, taking on a lot of the heavy lifting to ensure its success. Time and again, Nathanial has stepped out of his comfort zone, always keeping the rescue’s continued growth and success as his priority.

One of the most heartfelt contributions Nathanial has made was fostering Carlie, our very first rescue dog. As her hospice foster, he provided her with unparalleled love and care, proving just how deep his compassion runs. His connection with Carlie embodies the spirit of our mission to honor and care for senior dogs.

Nathanial serves on the board with passion, a calm and strategic mind, and unwavering confidence in our mission. His dedication to spreading the word about GBF and making a difference wherever he can has been invaluable.

We are so grateful for Nathanial’s contributions and proud to have him on our team. Take a minute to read his bio above🤍

Welcome to The Golden Bark Foundation, Bosley!

This sweet old man was found as a stray, and unfortunately, no one came forward to claim him during his mandatory hold. He has the most lovable personality and an adorable frosted face!

Bosley is in need of a dental and has a head tilt that we’ll be investigating with our vet. Thanks to our Home for the Holidays fundraiser, we’re able to cover all his medical care!

Bosley is officially our first intake of 2025 and rescue #68 for GBF! We’re so excited to get to know him better. He’s not fully potty trained but with some persistence and patience we know he’ll get there. We have learned he loves other dogs, cats and gets along wonderfully with respectful toddlers.

Let’s all give a warm welcome to Bosley 🤍

🌟 Meet Amanda, Our Board Treasurer! 🌟

We’re thrilled to introduce you to one of the incredible individuals guiding The Golden Bark Foundation to become better and greater each day. Our board members are the heart of our mission, leading and inspiring us to make a meaningful impact.

During this past board session, I had the honor of nominating two exceptional people to join our board of directors, and Amanda was an easy choice.

Amanda first became involved with GBF in November 2023, when we were searching for accounting help. She came highly recommended by a mutual friend, and it didn’t take long for her to prove just how hardworking and dedicated she is—not only to her craft but also to our mission.

Since then, Amanda has poured countless hours into organizing our books, assisting with grant applications, and supporting other operational needs of the organization. Her multifaceted contributions and her unwavering commitment to leaving the world a better place made her nomination a no-brainer.

We’re proud to announce that Amanda will serve as our Treasurer, a role that reflects her incredible dedication to ensuring our financial and operational success.
