We are aware of the posts circulating about Groot, a beautiful Great Dane that recently stayed at our resort. We have been silent on social media as we tried talking to the pet parents, and pulled and reviewed footage & records from our resort. However, because of the heinous nature of the accusations, weβre now choosing to make a public statement.
Grootβs owners informed us yesterday (4/11) that Groot had been taken to an emergency vet for torsion and bloat. Our staff are trained on many different things to look for in an unwell dog, and key among them is bloat. Bloat (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus) is the number one fatal health condition affecting Great Danes, per the AKC and the Great Dane Club of America (https://gdca.org/the-great-dane/health-and-research/). It is estimated that 37% of all Great Danes will experience bloat during their lifetime. It is a truly horrible, traumatic thing for dogs and pet parents to go through, and unfortunately there is no way to completely prevent it.
Groot showed none of the signs of GDV bloat while at our resort. Our staff are trained to know the signs for this serious emergency, as GDV is a life-threatening condition that can progress in minutes. https://gdca.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Bloat-Chart.pdf
These social posts are claiming that Groot was not provided food or water at our resort. This is patently untrue. As those who trust us with the care of their pets know, we have stringent feeding and water schedules and cameras throughout the resort for pet parents to watch their dogs. We reviewed the footage and have found that our protocol was followed, and that Groot ate his food.
Lastly, these social posts are claiming that Groot was weak, lethargic, and barely able to even make it into the car at pickup. We pulled footage from our cameras to check to see if his behavior had changed upon checkout, and this was absolutely not true. He was still the relaxed, affable dog we had come to know and love.
