Today was a good day…until it wasn’t.
Today was today and tomorrow will come no matter what today brought.

My day started with squeezing lemon into my coffee instead of my water…I thought this was a foreshadow of how my day would go…so I wasnt looking forward to it. My first client was a new client and I wanted to get to the clinic early…no time for breakfast..but I brought it with me.

I looked at my schedule and saw there were 15 clients on schedule and a litter of 8 puppies coming in for their first check ups.

Some clients were early, some late…the day was running smoothly; with some bumps…it was 10 am…that disgusting lemon coffee came to mind and I thought ‘ Ha! My day is going much better than I thought’!

Every patient that comes in has a story, a purpose. Every owner has their own thought and feeling of what their pet means to them and their family. When a client is in my practice for how ever long they are there…that is MY time to examine, educate and treat…to the best of my abilities..and sit on the floor with my patients.

I listened to each owner and watched the interaction between the owner and their cat or dog. Some dogs followed me around the room because I am the ‘ new person’ and maybe I smell like “bribery” ( I cheated and had treats in my pocket), while others inspected every inch of the room and one elder patient cared less about me as they just laid down next to their owner, one was very suspicious of me and was hyperfocused on my every move…total fake out once i showed off the treats! Today, everyone wanted to be my friend! One in particular ( Mr. Levi) was especially fond of me as he sat in front of me with his big brown eyes gazing up to me as I spoke to his owners…clearly blocking my way so as to pet him before I could make any moves.

As the owners leave I have the hope that I have made a difference in that pet’s life by better educating the owner so that dog or cat will have a great life. I have the hope that what I have explained to them about topics such as vaccines, and which ones were recommended and why or why not, allergies and how dry dog food is dehydrating, heartworm testing and giving monthly prevention rather than giving prevention every other month and what can happen, educating owners about how to strengthen the back legs of their elder dog who is having trouble getting up….

I care about my clients pet’s…not because I am a vet, not because I love animals, but because that is who I am innately. Because of who I am..I am able to do what i do every day. I give so much to my patients that I have less time for me…and thats ok, it always has been. My clients can text me when they need me, and I answer as soon as I can. Because of who I am.

I made it through the day…like I never thought I would after that horrid coffee! I had three great new clients, got to spend time with some of my older patients and fluffed around with some cute fluffy puppies!

I finally got to turn the sign to ‘ Closed ‘ and I remembered…something….lost my train of thought ..

Today was a good day…until it wasn’t.

I received a text from a client … there was no “hello”, no “ Hi” just went right in…She was upset about not being able to come in for an appointment when she wanted…I explained why I schedule the way I do, wanting only one patient in clinic at a time…this wasn’t good enough and her old vet would let her..and went on to how much better her old vet was than me…

I saw her pet as I do all of my patients… I called the local animal ER to speak to the vet on shift while she waited in their exam room to get an update on her dog…at 3am…because she text me for help…and I answered.

I turn to leave my clinic ..hand on the door and remembered…I had’nt eaten my breakfast.

So…I go home numb. My entire day struggles and achievements ..hours of doing what I love…to be brought to ground zero with a few texts.

Inhale. Hold. Breathe.
Today was today and tomorrow will come no matter what today brought…hopefully without the lemon!

Induction of vomiting at home can become more of a concern than what was actually wrongfully ingested: Vomit induction should only be under the direct supervision of a vet…here are just a few reasons why; “if it scratches on the way down, it will likely scratch on the way up” sharp objects should be removed endoscopically or surgically to avoid severe permanent damage to the esophagus, choking on the object swallowed as it is vomited up, aspiration of acidic stomach contents into the lungs, aspiration of ingests into the lungs, and lastly and most devastating is that vomiting can decrease heart rate so severely that the animal can collapse mid vomit and become unconscious.

If you haven’t been out to Panther Ridge during twilight hours…you’re missing out!! This was quite the experience!! I have worked on some of their big cats ( and some smaller ones)..…this was such a great time! Kendi and Nyambe were right at the front gates to meet and greet everyone that came in! The cats were all out and interactive with everyone! Everyone was free to take their time to stop at each cat and ask questions and learn about the cats…where they came from, what their enrichment consists of, what they eat, how they are trained and how many of them are a part of the species survival plan! https://pantherridge.org

Did you know that vaccinations come with a guarantee?

* Vaccination Guarantee: Vaccinations that are given by Dr. Salvo have a guarantee of efficacy from the manufacturer ; which covers diagnostics and treatments up to $5000 if the animal contracts the disease in which it has been vaccinated. THIS does NOT apply if vaccines were given by a breeder and therefore vaccinations given by a breeder will not be accepted as adequate, or in lieu of an appropriate vaccination protocol.
