The Royse City Animal Shelter is much more than just a shelter. It’s a place where dedicated professionals and volunteers share their commitment, passion and talent to help the animals and people of Royse City.
The Royse City Animal Shelter operates a companion animal shelter and adoption center that houses roughly 500 animals per year. With the help of staff and our volunteers, we provide a caring, clean, and loving environment to animals in need.
Our vision is to provide every adoptable companion animal a home, to reunite lost pet companions with their family as quickly as possible, and to provide kindness and care to animals in need while in our care.
Our mission is to enhance the lives of companion animals and support the human-animal bond through adoption, reunification, vaccinations, and spay/neuter awareness.

We love and want to help all animals but we are a very small shelter. City Ordinances stipulate that only strays and surrenders from City of Royse City residents who pay city utilities and are inside our service area can be turned into the shelter. If you find a stray animal in another city, in the county, or do not pay utilities to City of Royse City, please take that animal to your local county shelter.
Our shelter is one of the smallest shelters in the area and we are a limited intake shelter. When our shelter becomes full, we no longer intake animals until the animals we have are found wonderful homes. Thank you for your understanding and support; we can’t do what we do without our citizens.
City Pet Registration is required by the City of Royse City
Royse City Ordinance 282, Sec. 2.01.005 and Sec. 2.03.001 states that current Rabies Vaccination and Pet Registrations must be completed.
Dog and cat licenses are due January 1st and expire December 31st.
Proof of current Rabies Vaccination preformed by a Veterinarian is required.
You can renew your pet registrations at city hall Monday-Friday from 8 AM – 5 PM
or the animal shelter Monday-Friday 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM
Cost of registration for dogs and cats is
$5.00 for sterilized
$10.00 for unsterilized
Volunteering
Are you interested in helping out at our shelter? We are always looking for volunteers to come out and help at the shelter. Just fill out an application (https://www.roysecity.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Volunter-Shelter-Volunteer-Application.pdf) and bring it in to Royse City City Hall. You will be notified that you have been accepted to volunteer.
Volunteering hours
Volunteers are welcome to come during the week on Tuesdays and Thursdays. We start at 8:30 am and finish at 12 noon. We also greatly appreciate help from our volunteers during any Saturday events, which can include offsite adoption events.
Volunteer Application information
Processing of volunteer applications usually take 3-5 business days so make sure to get your applications in early before you want to come out and volunteer with us!
Our shelter accepts volunteers starting at the age of 14, junior volunteers (14-17) must have a parent/guardian present for the duration of their volunteering.
Please note – if being a volunteer is not a good fit for a person, the Animal Control Officers reserve the right to end the relationship.
What can I volunteer for?
The first time a volunteer comes to the shelter, they will go through Volunteer Orientation. It is required that all volunteers are familiar with the shelter standard operating procedures before they are allowed to volunteer in the shelter.
After volunteers complete the orientation, they will have a volunteer task list to identify important tasks that need to be completed on a daily basis. Some of these tasks include: Cleaning and disinfecting kennels, organizing storage areas, maintaining cleanliness of the shelter admin building, keeping outside areas clean and free of debris, playing and socializing with our shelter guests. Setting up for and cleaning after events. Other tasks can be added as the volunteer is able and comfortable with the task.

Fostering Shelter Animals
Are you interested in volunteering at the shelter but can’t help with physical work or don’t have the time to come out every day?
Do you love dogs, cats, kittens and puppies?
Come on in to the shelter and apply to be a foster family! We are always looking for new foster families to help us out as we are a very small facility and our dogs and cats could always use a break from the noise and kennels. We offer weekend fostering, holiday fostering and foster till adopted. We provide you with the items you need to look after the animal you choose to foster. In return, you send us photos and updates and we share them on our page! You will be helping an animal in need and they will grow and flourish in your care.
Give us a call to discuss fostering with our animal control officers or come on in and fill out foster forms.
TNR ( Trap Neuter Release )
We offer a TNR (Trap Neuter/Spay Release) program, you may rent traps to trap stray cats. We will neuter or spay the animal and you release them back into their environment. Please notify us at the time of trap rental if it is for the TNR program. TNR surgeries are preformed on Wednesdays. Please make sure to call ahead 972-635-6609 and inform us that you are bringing a TNR. You will need to fill out the TNR form.
TNR stops the breeding cycle of cats, reducing the size of the colony and therefore improves their lives while preventing extreme over population of cats.

Humane Trap Rental
Animal services have humane traps available for Royse City Resident’s use. A trap rental agreement will need to be completed and a deposit of $25.00 for a wildlife trap is required. The deposit will be refunded when the humane trap is returned in good working order. Our staff will be happy to show you how to set the trap.
We have a very limited number of traps available for residents to use. Traps are loaned to residents on a first come first serve basis. Feel free to give us a call to check if we have any available traps before coming out to the facility.
How does a humane trap work?
A humane Trap is a cage with a door on one end which can be lifted and set in place with a small notch and bar. The door is connected to a flat metal trip place on the bottom of the trap. The trap is baited by placing food at the back of the trap, past the trip plate. When the animal enters the trap, the weight of its paw on the trip plate triggers the door to shut behind it. The trip plate is far enough away from the door so that the animal is not harmed.
Trap Instructions
- Check the trap on a daily basis. Leaving an animal in a trap for an extended period without notifying Animal Control constitutes Animal Cruelty under the laws of the State of Texas, and is punishable by fines and/or imprisonment.
- *IMPORTANT* Please don’t set traps on weekends, holidays, or in inclement weather because Animal Control Officers are not available for picking up animals in traps. Traps may be set or reset on Sunday night provided Monday is not a holiday.
- DO NOT set the trap on the day before or the day of a holiday. Do not lend the trap to any other person or remove it from your property. Responsibility for the trap is solely yours during this agreement. You will be held responsible for any expenses incurred by Royse Cit Animal Services to repair or replace the trap if it is damaged, lost or stolen.
- DO NOT set traps when you will be gone from the property for extended periods of time, where the trap will not be supervised in case of it being triggered and left out.
- DO NOT set traps when inclement weather is expected. ( Ex: thunderstorms, damaging wind or heavy rain )
- DO NOT set traps when temperatures are below 35 degrees or above 90 degrees.
- Please call us at (214)934-9352 or (214)796-1445 as soon as possible if an animal has been trapped. Leave a voice mail or tell the Animal Control Officer your name, address, phone number and what is caught in the trap.
- Animal Control will not remove animals from humane traps after regular business hours (Monday to Friday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm).
