The sister of a new rider, at one of my Summer Riding Academies this year, chose to write about my Summer Program here at the Diamond B Equestrian Center, for a college paper she wrote.
I was honored and excited to share some of my story with the young lady and decided to share with you as my clients and friends, as well. Maybe my students will enjoy it too.
1. What’s my purpose in creating the camp/riding academy?
* I strive to provide a positive, fun, and challenging way to help kids improve their horsemanship and riding skills, as well as over-all knowledge of horses while experiencing the pure beauty of what horses have to offer.
2. What do I hope to teach kids?
* I hope to teach them how to be better horsemen, have an understanding of the biomechanics of riding to be a better rider, how to better communicate with the horse by understanding how they communicate to each of them.
* While participating in training activities throughout the academy, horses also help the kids improve their listening skills, focus, and communication skills, as well as many other life skills.
3. What’s the date that I started the program?
* Summer of 2007
4. How do I determine the price?
* I try to find a middle ground of what the market rate is so that they appreciate the value of my program, while staying affordable for more families.
5. What is my experience with horses?
* I learned a lot from my grandparents, while growing up and started training horses for the public as a teenager. I was also lucky enough to have parents that supported my dreams and goals, and were willing to be “horse poor”.
* After high school I went on to college, earning a Riding Masters V from Meredith Manor International Equestrian Center. Once graduated, I worked for a number of different trainers in various disciplines for several years. I also worked a couple office jobs to improve my marketing/sales/communication skills, to better prepare myself for owning, running, and marketing my own business.
* I started my own business training horses and teaching riders in 2003. I have been self-employed in the horse industry since.
6. Am I passionate about the camps/academies?
* Absolutely YES
7. Do I allow electronics?
* The riders have very limited access, generally only before bed, sometimes during lunch break.
8. Why?
* Several reasons why:
It’s a constant distraction which is a safety issue around horses.
* I also feel strongly, that it’s important for them to have the opportunity to engage in conversations with each other, to interact in person, and be truly “present” in the moment. This not only helps them to “detox” from social media but helps to build social skills by communicating in person, while building new and old friendships.
9. Is there a general schedule that is followed in creating the camp/academy?
* Yes. The 1st day is focused on orientation so they have an understanding of what they are working towards, as well as discussing individual goals they wish to accomplish.
* The rest of the week is tailored to help each rider accomplish their goals, along with training exercises to improve their balance, riding/handling skills, and overall knowledge of horses.
* At the end of the week, I m.c. and host a Freestyle Show which the kids compete in to showcase their accomplishments for their family and friends, earning medals and ribbons to take home.
* In the short time that I have with the young riders, through the passion of horses and Gods Blessings, I hope to have a positive impact that lasts a lifetime for each and every one of them. 💕
