Sweet, Sweet Petunia. She has been with us for 2 weeks now. Meowing and looking for something or maybe someone. Her owner did pass away, which is why she is here. We've given her one of the kitty suites all to herself. We've let her come out and visit us every morning. We've offered canned food, made sure her kibble was topped off, and her water fresh. But she still seemed to be unsettled. That is until today she discovered a cat tree that had been donated from her home. She seemed to immediately settle down and has been napping most of the morning in it. Now she just needs someone to adopt her, along with her special cat tree of course! Her adoption fee is free since she is already spayed.

Olive Oil is a 6 month old 15 pound female Shepherd Lab Mix. She will likely be what is dubbed "SMedium". Not a big dog, but not quite a small dog either. She is not spayed yet. She was picked up with what we assume is her littermate, Popeye as a stray. We were told they must have been dumped possibly several days before we got the call or possibly weeks. We really didn't get a clear story on the situation. But here they are at the shelter ready for a new home. She is a typical puppy that will need the commitment from a family to teach her how to be well behaved.

The adoption fee of $100 is a refundable deposit. The adopter will be responsible to have the animal spayed or neutered within 90 days at the clinic of their choosing. If this is completed within the required 90 days the adopter is to submit required documentation that includes a spay/neuter certificate, a receipt for the spay/neuter, and a rabies certificate to get their refund of up to the deposited amount. Spay and Neuter is required for adoption per our adoption contract and by Indiana State Law. We accept cash, card (with a 3% charge), and check.

All dogs receive at least 1 distemper/parvo and Bordetella vaccine. If possible a heartworm test will be done and if negative the dog will be started on heartworm prevention. All animals receive a flea and parasite prevention/treatment and will be microchipped.

All animals can go home the same day as adoption. We will need your photo ID and you will sign some documents. Adopters will also receive a copy of the animal's medical history to date. We do not do an application process. All adoptions are first come, first serve. We do not offer holds.

We do not require in most cases that adopters bring all their families members and dogs for a meet and greet. But we do highly encourage it. We are happy to introduce the new dog to your dog(s) at the shelter. No appointment necessary.

We do offer home trials of dogs over 6 months of age for about a week. You will not need to pay the adoption fee (spay neuter deposit) ahead of time, but if you decide to adopt you will need to return to the shelter to complete the paperwork and pay the adoption deposit. If you do not wish to complete the adoption, you can bring the dog back at any time during normal business hours during your home trial period. We do not allow after hours drop off.

William is a 2 year old male. He is not fixed yet. He was an owner surrender due to owner moving and not allowed to have pets. His previous owner calls every few days to see how he is doing as they really didn't want to give him up, but had no other choice. They tried to find someone to take him, but because he isn't neutered yet and they didn't want to take him to get neutered. He is reported to be friendly with cats and children. He uses a litterbox and doesn't have marking behaviors. He is reported to be a lap cats, enjoys snuggling, loves, play. He has been very quiet at the shelter, taking a few days to settle in. He simply needs an adopter who will get him neutered in 90 days to get their adoption fee refunded. One day for an appointment equals a lifetime of companionship.

The adoption fee of $50 is a refundable deposit.

All adopters must bring a cat carrier, otherwise they will need to purchase one from us for $20. All adoptions are first come, first serve.

All cats receive at least 1 feline vaccine. All animals receive a flea and parasite prevention/treatment and will be microchipped.

Jambalaya is a 1 year old male. He is not neutered yet. He came in as a request to pick up a stray. So we don't know anything about him. He is very friendly. He most likely had someone who offered him attention and food, but was never neutered or microchip even though there are plenty of low cost resources. An owner never stepped up to claim him after 3 days, so here he is waiting to be adopted by someone. He is very friendly with everyone. He simply needs an adopter who will get him neutered in 90 days to get their adoption fee refunded. One day for an appointment equals a lifetime of companionship.

Alice is a 2 year old female. She is not fixed yet. She was an owner surrender due to the older cat in the home not getting along with her. The owner stated she wasn't good with cats, but was unable to elaborate on this. We haven't had the chance yet to see if she could get along with a cat who is interested in getting along with her. It also could be because she isn't spayed yet and once spayed she may be more open to sharing a home. She is reported to be good around dogs and uses a litterbox. She can be skittish around children and new environments. Once she settles in she will seek out attention from you.

The adoption fee of $50 is a refundable deposit. The adopter will be responsible to have the animal spayed or neutered within 90 days at the clinic of their choosing. Trixie is a 9 month old spayed female. She was adopted last year and just returned due to a child in the home being allergic. She was adopted with Kat, who was also returned. Her adopter reported she LOVES food (with her weighing in at 10 pounds the scale doesn't lie). She loves it sooo much she can be a bit sneaky and help herself to what is on the counter. She is reported to get along with cats, dogs, and kids. She is very playful with other cats. She can be a little shy at first, but warms up very quickly.

Trixie is already spayed, so her adoption fee is free.

To our community:

As you have probably noticed recently we have had several calls for deceased cats in Rushville. These cats that we have scooped off the road are not microchipped or fixed. Very likely these cats are part of our very over populated feral/community cat population in town. If you are one of the volunteers in our community who are willing to feed this population, WE ALSO NEED you to participate in helping to reduce the population. Kitten season is coming up fast. We take in 100s of cats/kittens in the Spring and Summer seasons. There simply isn't enough homes or resources to save every one of them. The non profit group www.pub.vet offers low cost spay neuter for CATS. They have significant financial assistance for Rush County residents. Their clinic comes to Rushville and surrounding counties monthly. You also may borrow traps from us at no cost. Please help us as your tax funded limited resource county animal shelter save more by preventing more lives!
