Farming isn't always about the cute, fun, and amazing things. It also includes sadness and sometimes downright tragedies. I don't usually share that stuff on here because, well, who wants to see that. I'm sharing this one because it has a bit of a happy ending.
We've been lucky in our 8 years of raising goats that we haven't had any major issues when our babies are born. Sure, there have been a couple of easy fix stuck babies and some miscarriages, but nothing we couldn't handle ourselves. Until last week. And we had 2 major incidents within 6 days.
Keeping the story short, the first mom had a baby girl, the next day she struggled to get out the other two babies that were stuck in the birth canal and we had to have a vet help us pull them. The babies were already dead at that time and the situation was so rough the mama died the next morning. Now we have a perfectly healthy bottle baby girl.
Fast forward a few days, after the other 5 moms have successfully given birth to all 10 of their babies, and the last mom goes into labor. She is struggling and we finally decide to go in and help. This time, all 3 babies were already dead and the first 2 were stuck in the birth canal. We were able to get them out ourselves but it wasn't easy.
2 days later, that mom was still with us and looking for her kids. We decided to see if we could get her to adopt our orphaned baby. It took 2-3 days but that mom and that baby adopted each other! It's so good to see the two of them together and the mom is a bit of a "helicopter mom" but the baby, who was without a mom for several days, doesn't understand that she's supposed to answer when her new mom calls to her and stresses mama out! 😊
An epic buckling battle! 😂😂😂
Kidding season has started here! Twin boy and girl.
Anxious to see how this experiment turns out.
Meeting the ladies. Not the best video thanks to the sun's positioning.
Tiny Mo the bottle baby and her body guard.
Our young, new herdsire TKI Cratos was feeling frisky in the wind but Uncle Mike wasn't really feeling it the way the young buck was.
Haven't done a horse video in a while...
Finally got some decent video of the new babies. These kids were born from the first through the eighth. We have one bottle baby living in the house that was born to a first time mom that didn't have enough milk to support the twins she gave birth to.
Happy New Year and happy new babies! Twin doelings to start the year/kidding season!
Hanging out with the girls on this delightful December afternoon.
Much to their mother's chagrin, the newest babies on the farm weren't quite understanding what they were supposed to do with the watermelon.
Whisper's afternoon routine.
