HOORAY everyone. At this point Dr. Matt says I will not be sent to hard labor but looks like I’ll be heading home pending paperwork! Thank you to everyone who expressed interest in little ol’ me!

I am as cute in person as I am in this photo. I appear to be a Dachsund, am a female and my teeth would indicate I am just a baby - maybe not even 3 months old. Dr. Matt’s high school helper did her work yesterday with me tucked in her arms and shirt. He said my cuteness has slowed her down doing her work!! I was picked up by animal control in the area of St. John and Wisconsin street. NO CHIP but that’s maybe cause I am young and my owners just haven’t gotten it done yet. Dr. Matt says after my 3 day hold I get shipped to a hard labor camp. I’m too beautiful for that!! I hope my owners claim me or after Thursday I can be adopted for a minimal fee. Call 785-483-2435 to save me!!! VET REFERENCES WILL BE CHECKED FOR ANYONE ADOPTING ME. THEIR PETS MUST BE UP TO DATE ON SHOTS WITH AT MINIMUM PROOF THEIR PETS ARE ON FLEA AND TICK PREVENTION. And, I am a puppy so you are committing to my series of puppy shots and deworming at minimum.

I was abandoned, whomever owned me didn’t care enough to look for me, even though I am sweet and a good boy. But I still want to love humans!! Luckily, the good folks at Town and Country in Russell have assured me I am going to be adopted to a good home that they approve of. I’ve had my shots, am heartworm negative and have gotten my first dose of heartworm, flea and tick prevention. I’m ready for an adventure and for a forever home! I’ve also been microchipped so I will hopefully never be lost without someone who can be called to claim me. I do have a slight adoption fee but it is minimal and I promise I’ll be worth it. Call 785-483-2435 to set up a time to come visit and maybe take me home!! (Vet reference required for anyone wanting to adopt this young, smart neutered male)

Incarcerated but by no fault of his own, this neutered male is about as sweet a dog as you will ever see. He was impounded by Russell PD over this past weekend. No chip unfortunately. He will be available for adoption soon. He is neutered and seems to have good manners. Loves to be petted and loved on. Call us at 785-483-2435 during office hours if he is yours, you know whose he is, or you want information on adopting him. He’s great!!

Omni (one of Dr. Matt’s shorthairs) offers her own picture up to warn others of the dangers of rattlesnake bites!! Although this happened last fall while hunting, we have been called about snake encounters this year. Omni and Dr. Matt encourage use of the rattlesnake vaccine to help mitigate the bodies reaction to a venomous snake bite and Omni HIGHLY RECOMMENDS the antivenom that Dr. Matt has started using at the clinic to help dogs quickly recover with less pain and injury after a snake bite. Give us a call today at 785-483-2435 to discuss getting your dog the vaccine!

Friday late afternoon fun! This is why we recommend spaying your dogs and cats. Not only does in keep them from having unplanned litters (which a good percentage of need caesarean sections so $$) but it prevents the development of an infected uterus, called a pyometra. These can be deadly and at the very least can sure cause your beloved pet to be very ill. This girl really outdid herself by including a baseball sized ovarian tumor and mammary tumors with her pyometra surgery. SPAY AND NEUTER, Bob Barker had it right! (Young folk, look him up!).

So this might upset some folks but don’t care. At all. If you are going to own a pet, for the love of all that is Holy, vaccinate your pet you claim you love so much for rabies and keep them current per your Veterinarians recommendation. I don’t give 2 Pennie’s if “they never go outside of yard or my house”. That is just wrong. Accidents happen, pets escape the yard, can bite someone because they are scared OR get bit by a fox or skunk that is rabid, etc. IF YOU OWN A PET VACCINATE THEM PROPERLY (according to your Veterinarian and not the damn internet) and keep them current. Most clinics send out reminder cards, not for the heck of it but to be useful. This is frustrating. If you can’t afford to vaccinate, you can’t afford a pet. Plain and simple. Rant over and if you are offended, why are you offended by good advice that is in your pets best interest (if your pet has a condition where it shouldn’t be vaccinated, follow your vets advice and don’t comment here).

As you all know, Dr. Matt needs his beauty sleep. But, in the early AM if you are going to be up for a few hours, great to have an outcome like this from a c-section. We were able to help this momma have a nice litter of hungry pups who got their first gulps of colostrum before they ever went home.

Immature heartworm (microfilaria) in dogs blood smear. Cool video of a potentially deadly disease! Seen today at our clinic. (Hard to see the microfilaria but it is what is moving amidst the red blood cells)

02/07/2024

This is why dogs need to be heartworm tested and on a preventative. These pictures are from a dog we saw today that has been coughing. Due to what we saw on radiographs we did a heartworm test and then looked at a blood smear for microfilaria (early stage of heartworm parasite). This dog was positive on heartworm test and on blood smear for microfilaria. The dog is owned by great folks who will do all they can as we treat the infection. But, it is important for all pet owners to understand these facts. One, treatment is not without risks based upon number of adult heartworm in the heart and the damage they have already caused. Two, treatment is much more costly than prevention. Three, any heartworm positive dog is a source of infection for other dogs in the area, mosquitoes are the way heartworm spreads. So, what can you do? HAVE YOUR DOG HEARTWORM TESTED and PLACED ON A PREVENTATIVE. If your dog has symptoms your veterinarian thinks warrant a heartworm test or when your Vet says it’s time to test them even if they are on a preventative please don’t think they are just trying to squeeze more money out of you. They aren’t. They are trying to do the very best they (we) can for your pet. If these images of the immature worms in the blood concern you, they should. Call your Veterinarian and see what is recommended for your area. Watch for specials on testing and products here at Town and Country!! (Cool video in next post)

Hours for the Christmas Holiday. Town and Country Animal Hospital will be open normal hours on Friday, December 22nd. We will then be closed until 8 am on Wednesday, December 27th. We wish all our wonderful clients and animals a very Merry Christmas!

We also thank you for putting up with our parking lot mess. Once it dries, we promise we will address it as soon as we can so the entire lot is once again useable. Trust us, we are very sorry for the mess!!

Merry Christmas!!

12/15/2023

While we are thankful for the rain, it has combined with the new material we had spread to improve our parking lot last week and created a muddy mess! We are hoping as it dries and we smooth the ruts it will really pack down. But for now please park on the north side of the garage area where our employees usually park to avoid any chance of getting stuck! Thank you. And sorry for any inconvenience.

Town and Country Animal Hospital is excited to announce we are now offering Librela injections in dogs who we have been diagnosed with osteoarthritis pain. A new product and technology, Librela is a monoclonal antibody that targets a protein that upregulates the pain pathway in dogs. It is very specific acting and is extremely safe. A once a month injection, this has the opportunity to be a game changer in helping our furry friends. For more information give us a call and we can talk about what is required to see if your pet is a candidate for Librela!

We are also, in response to the respiratory disease affecting dogs you may have read about, offering canine influenza vaccine. In a lot of the metropolitan areas this has been a requirement to board dogs, even to take them to a groomer. Although not a problem in Kansas at this time, it is a recommendation by Veterinary Specialists to help possibly prevent infection with the respiratory infection. Again, give us a call to discuss if you would like during office hours. 785-483-2435. Thank you!
