Created to introduce underserved youth populations horticulture practices; the project was developed by Dr. Nancy J Dawson after she noticed that the children in her neighborhood lacked knowledge of food production. With her personal funds, she met with children on her back porch. Sympathetic to her mission, the City of Russellville leased her land with the help of the Logan County extension 4H

program. Shortly afterwards, Kentucky State University Department of Agriculture awarded the program a grant. Currently, volunteers(including Dawson) oversee the day to day operations of the garden along with local children.

Today the Women’s Farming Class learned about growing potatoes in tires.

Today, the women’s farm group planted corn. We discussed that most sweet corn sold is GMO(Genetically Modified). Our group strives to grow as natural as possible. We care what is in our food! Do you? Educate yourself!

The oldest women in our program is almost 77 years old! It is never too late to learn.
