A mid-week moment of love from Guzik and Winfrey ❤️ We love having such sweet snuggly pets!!!

Feel free to share your snuggly pet pictures below ☺️

It’s cold cold cold this week!

Which makes it harder to provide our pups with the activity we both need 😩

Here are some ideas for indoor activity to entertain yours pups with to prevent too much pent up energy:

-Treat or toy scavenger hunt: hide a handful of treats- or a toy your dog is playing with- in one room. Then release your dog to use their nose to find their prizes! The first couple of tries they might need a little help.
-Trick training: teach your pup something new and fun! Some examples: spin, bow, jump over your leg, or back up (as Henri demonstrates in this video). You can find trick ideas and descriptions on the AKC website on their Trick Dog page.
-Food enrichment toys: Use some of your dog’s food to prepare some food enrichment toys so they can entertain themselves by working for their food! Classic Kong toys, puzzle toys, snuffle mats or a DIY treat dispensing box are all great options!

How do you keep your dog busy and entertained when the weather is harsh? Share your ideas below!

Starting Monday Feb. 10th! Sign your young puppy up for preschool!

Early puppyhood is a critical time for socialization and learning. The right puppy class is the single most important thing you can do to help your puppy reach his full potential!

In this class we cover:
-Proactive socialization
-Positive training
-Problem solving for common puppy behaviors
-Dog-dog communication (puppy playtime!)
-Relationship building
-Preparing for positive vet and groomer visits

Because pups are in their socialization developmental period, 8-12 weeks is the best time to start introducing this training.

During exploration time in Puppy Start Right Preschool, puppies are introduced to novel objects and activities with a proactive, positive approach. This helps them build confidence that is going to serve them well as they grow!

Puppy Start Right Preschool classes are going live soon! First class starts Monday Feb. 10th at 7pm and are rolling admission. Will be sharing a flyer soon, and more information and registration can be found at trainmeanimaltraining.com !

Contractors needed to come into the house briefly so Ciapek (unsure of strangers while also very nosey) practiced settling on a mat behind a gate.

This gave him space to observe them without feeling pressured to interact with them, or getting underfoot.

Settle on a mat is a well known skill for Ciapek, so with plenty of rewards he stayed calm and they were able to come and go without worry.

If it were more involved and I had a heads up I will also opt to close him and Zuzu in the bedroom in these situations to keep everyone comfortable and quiet and help things go smoothly. For this brief interaction we were able to practice some training. :)

We don’t just train sit and stay around here- we like to get creative!

Here, my brothers dog Auggie shows off his newly learned trick “settle”, which means to rest his muzzle between his paws.

With his puppy dog eyes and big pointy ears, this trick has quite the effect! Who could say no to that face?

What’s a fun new skill your pup has learned recently? Share below!

Very important to remember!

If you’re thinking about passing off your dog as a service animal to gain access to “No Pets” venues or avoid pet fees, please don’t! The high standards of behavior required for guide dogs and other service animals goes far beyond that of ordinary pets. It takes almost two years to prepare a guide dog for its work. Hundreds of hours are spent gradually exposing guide dog pups to a variety of public places and modes of transportation. This enables working guide dogs to calmly and reliably perform their essential duties in all types of settings, and ensures that venues like busy restaurants and crowded trains will not trigger fearful or anxious behaviors such as uncontrolled barking, vicious growling, jumping on other people, or getting away from the handler.

Photo Description: Guiding Eyes black Lab pup Oscar sitting calmly on a train station platform in S**o, Maine. He’s wearing an orange collar, a blue training vest, and a multi-colored leash. In the background, the sky is overcast and a sleek silver train with blue and red stripes is visible.

The animal training and behavior world was changed for the better because of Karen Pryor's incredible work. Author of books including "Don't Shoot the Dog" and founder of Karen Pryor Clicker Training, through which I gained my dog training certification, her impact on the lives of trainers, owners and animals everywhere is immeasurable.

I recommend taking a moment to read more about her work and legacy at the link below.

With profound sadness and immense gratitude, we honor the life and legacy of Karen Pryor, a true pioneer in the fields of animal behavior and positive reinforcement training. Karen’s groundbreaking work revolutionized how we communicate with animals—and each other—leaving an indelible mark on science, education, and the lives of countless species around the world.

Well written post, and something we often discuss in classes!

Your dog or puppy does not have to say hi to everyone you see- you always have the right to advocate for your dog and tell someone 'no'.

Why yes my dog would LOVE to say hi, but I’m still going to say “no thank you” and move on. Why?

1. Because I want my dog to learn that every time we see people it doesn’t mean it’s a party for him. I’d like him to continue his focus on us together as a team and not create conditioned excitement and expectation every time we are approached by someone.

2. Because I don’t know what saying hi means to you. Will you politely touch him? Will you allow him space to move away if he wants? Will you put your face too close to his? I don’t want him to have a negative experience so I’m going to avoid that by continuing our walk.

3. Because maybe I feel overwhelmed or stressed in public places and conversations with strangers may make me uncomfortable, so even though you’d like to talk and meet my dog, I’m protecting myself too.

4. Because we’re in a rush and have to get something done quickly.

5. Because I said no. Even social, sweet, friendly dogs and their handlers have every right to say “no” to a request to meet and be touched by people. This shouldn’t just apply to reactive, worried or bubble space dogs. Dogs are not public property, and saying “no thank you” to touching my dog shouldn’t be regarded as rude or unkind, any more than if a stranger asked to hold my baby.

Please normalize hearing “no” OR even better, normalize ignoring more dogs in public. Let them carry on with their handler and admire them from a far. It would do a world of good for dogs and humans everywhere, trust me.

Trainers’ dogs want training too! Here’s a snippet of what it might look like to train two dogs at once 😅

Winfrey and Henri here are at different stages of their training journeys. Here Winfrey (8 years old) is working on heeling on my right side, while young Henri (just 1 year) is working on waiting his turn calmly in the crate.

He’s learning that calmness = treats and getting to come out of the crate

To help Henri get here, he first got to run, play and train before I asked for him to settle in the crate. This, and keeping the training session short with breaks helped him succeed.

Waiting your turn is hard for a young guy like him- well done Henri! And thanks to Winfrey for being her patient angel self and helping Henri with this.
