Online Service Dog Registries are unnecessary and provide no real value and are Illegal in the United States. Service dog registries are hilariously unreliableโ€”you can even register a jar of Nutella! ๐ŸŒฐ๐Ÿพ This absurdity not only undermines the credibility of legitimate service dogs but also adds a humorous twist to the serious issue.

Remember, genuine service dogs undergo specific training to assist with tasks related to a handler's disability. Let's ensure the legitimacy of these important companions and not let a hazelnut spread steal the spotlight! ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ

A Service Dog has two clear requirements: the dog must be under control and trained to perform at least one task directly related to the handler's disability. The handler must have a disability, defined as a medical condition that interferes with major life functions such as seeing, walking, talking, etc.

If your disability doesn't require assistance from a task-trained dog, a service dog might not be the right choice for you.

If you believe your medical needs align with these criteria and you want to explore training your own service dog, feel free to reach out to us.

Yesterday, I went out to dinner with my service dog, only to be immediately denied entry by a sushi place citing a discriminatory "no animals, except licensed service dogs" policy. This policy is not only discriminatory but also illegal under ADA law. Despite explaining that my service dog was ADA-compliantโ€”clean, silent, and well-trained and task trained โ€”the situation escalated, and the restaurant insisted on allowing "only this once" with a rather unwarranted remark about having peppers next time.

Despite the setback, I persisted and managed to enjoy dinner with my loved ones, albeit in a dimly lit corner due to the spiteful attitude of some workers. Such challenges are unfortunately part of having a service dog, but this experience give us more to reflect on and discuss and laugh at the dinner table. So, all and all I was very lucky.

Don't forget to advocate for your service dogs and for yourselves. So, we can all enjoy ourselves.

Crate training a puppy is beneficial for housebreaking, safety, travel, preventing destructive behavior, establishing routines, facilitating overall training, helping with alone time, and managing emergencies. It provides a secure space and fosters positive associations when introduced gradually.

Crate training can be beneficial for your puppy's safety and comfort. Here's a step-by-step guide:

1. Introduce the Crate Gradually:
Start by placing the crate in a common area with the door open. Allow your puppy to explore it at their own pace.

2. Create a Positive Association:
Place treats, toys, or a soft blanket inside the crate to make it a positive and inviting space. Let your puppy discover these items.

3. Feeding in the Crate:
Begin feeding your puppy near the crate, then gradually move the food bowl inside. This helps associate the crate with positive experiences.

4. Short Sessions Inside:
Encourage your puppy to enter the crate using treats or toys. Close the door for short durations while you're present, gradually increasing the time.

5. Comfort Items:
Add comfortable bedding to make the crate cozy. Avoid materials your puppy might chew and swallow.

6. Quiet Time in the Crate:
Encourage your puppy to nap or spend quiet time in the crate during the day. Make it a positive experience with treats and praise.

7. Gradual Alone Time:
Practice leaving your puppy alone in the crate for short periods, starting with a few minutes and gradually extending the time. Always return calmly and reward them.

8. Ignore Whining:
If your puppy whines in the crate, avoid immediately letting them out. Wait for a moment of silence, then reward and praise.

9. Nighttime Routine:
Place the crate in your bedroom initially if your puppy is unsettled at night. Slowly move it to the desired location over time.

10.Consistent Schedule:
Stick to a consistent crate routine for meals, potty breaks, and bedtime. Predictability helps your puppy feel secure.

Remember, patience is key, and each puppy progresses at its own pace. Always associate the crate with positive experiences to create a comfortable and safe space for your puppy.

Another common belief is that service dogs aren't allowed to have off days where they make mistakes. However, in the next sentences, people often express the all-too-popular saying "service dogs aren't robots." I would argue that this saying is misleading to begin with and provides judgmental individuals with a phrase to fall back on.

Acknowledging just enough of a dog's emotions, needs, and reality makes the saying sound good. However, the issue lies in the fact that a dog is nothing like a machine that is so reliable it can replace human effort. Dogs are not inherently reliable; they are emotional, and that's okay. It's our job as handlers to help them become reliable and learn how to manage their emotions. However, at the end of the day, a dog's core isn't going to change, especially based on the advice of a complete stranger with little to no knowledge of the dog or the subject of the problem.

So to end this, what is my opinion? Ironically, more people need to have fewer opinions. If it's not your dog, ask yourself why you're going to say something to another handler. Do you actually have the experience to help? Even if you're a dog trainer, are you aware of the actual dynamics of the dog and handler? Is this dog and handler in the middle of training, and you don't see the progress yet? Do they just need more time and actual support? Is it actually any of your business?

Would the team be better served by your silence or more uplifting support instead of telling someone dos and don'ts?

Asking ourselves these questions helps all of us interacting with other members of the dog industry, encompassing everything. It helps the community be less cringe-worthy.

12/03/2023

First, let's talk about shock collars, what lies behind the basics of a shock collar, and does it actually shock your dog?

An electrical shock is the perceptible and physical effect of an electrical current that is higher when entering the dog's body, potentially causing damage. In the case of a shock collar, extreme pain and even heart problems can occur. The end result being giving your dog a very real actual painful shock.

You might be wondering about E-Collars. E-Collars utilize e-stim, which is also used in human physical therapy to alleviate pain, injuries, and more. E-stim employs electrical pulses to mimic signals from neurons, targeting muscles or nerves.

E-stim sends signals to specific muscles, inducing contractions, such as flexing the dog's neck. Trainers can use this as a barely perceptible tap for non-verbal communication or a slightly higher stimulus for light correction, akin to a gentle reminder between dogs.

While this type of e-stim in humans focuses on pain relief, it uses signals on a different wavelength to reach nerves rather than muscles. However, dogs differ significantly from humans, and E-Collars can be very painful and traumatic if misused. Due to the potential for misuse and lack of education, E-Collars are controversial, even facing consideration for bans in cities like San Francisco, CA, and being prohibited in countries like Germany, Austria, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Portugal, and more. Due to the easy ability to misuse E-Collars, I never recommend E-Collars as a first option to my clients.

E-Collars are tools that can be misused, leading to mistreatment and abuse of dogs. Before opting for an E-Collar, consider alternative tools or giving more time for training. If you decide on an E-Collar, bye a high-quality to avoid that caller constantly breaking and paying to your dog. For this expect to spend $160 - $400. Consult a qualified trainer with a holistic approach to ensure both you and your dog receive the care you deserve.

Regarding shock collars, I believe they are inherently painful, abusive, and should be avoided altogether.

Amid the increasing prevalence of the K9 illness, I'd like to outline our GFBDT ongoing safety standards since opening:

Safety Standards for All Sessions:
โ€ข Ensure that lesson dogs are current on rabies, bordetella, and DHPP vaccines and maintain good health.
โ€ข All trainers have successfully completed a K9 CPR course.
โ€ข Dogs are generally kept away from dog parks to safeguard them from exposure to ill, injured, or aggressive dogs.

Daytrain/Daycare:
โ€ข Flores are vacuumed and moped after each dogs stay. In order for it to be sanitary for the next client dog.
โ€ข Any dog displaying symptoms of a contagious illness is promptly sent home or quarantined if necessary. Training resumes after veterinary clearance.
โ€ข Kennel areas are kept cleaned to maintain sanitation.
โ€ข Baths are administered as needed.
โ€ข Dogs are not kenneled for extended periods to minimize stress, except for those highly crate-trained and comfortable in their crate.

Additional Measures in Response to K9 Illness:
โ€ขTrainers will immediately wash of clothes after interacting with any dogs.

โ€ขDogs will be kept away from dog parks to safeguard them from exposure to illness for the time being.

These standards ensure the well-being of our canine clients and maintain a safe environment amidst the current challenges posed by the K9 illness.

More and more. I see discussions of people recommending poodles as service dogs. And people saying how much poodles belong in the "fab four"

But I would ask you to rethink that. Here are my top 7 reasons why for not considering poodles as service dogs:

1. Grooming Demands: The grooming expenses, ranging from $70 to $150 every 4-6 weeks, combined with daily brushing, make poodles impractical, especially for individuals with disabilities due to the time and physical effort involved.

2. Handling Challenges: While poodles' natural hair can be charming, managing it proves excessively time-consuming and strenuous on the handler's joints, posing challenges for many disabled individuals.

3. Communication Style: Poodles' tendency to be vocal communicators may not align well with the discreet and focused nature required of service dogs in various situations.

4. Nervous Disposition: The breed's inclination towards nervousness can lead to challenges in training, with instances of service dog in training (SDiT) poodles struggling to overcome anxiety, potentially hindering their ability to perform required tasks.

5. High Energy Levels: Poodles, known for their extremely high energy levels, pose an additional challenge for disabled individuals who may find it demanding to meet the exercise requirements essential for the well-being of these dogs. The need for regular vigorous activities may be impractical and overwhelming for handlers with limited mobility or energy.

6. Limited Versatility: Contrary to common belief, poodles exhibit limited versatility in terms of workability. Their light body structure and soft mouth make them less suitable for tasks involving heavy mobility, light mobility, or non-weight-bearing mobility.

7. Hunting Heritage: Poodles' historical breeding for hunting, especially in marshy water or swimming, contrasts with the diverse demands placed on service dogs. Their low-impact design may not align with the more rigorous tasks expected in service dog roles.

The dog industry, encompassing everything from grooming & training to boarding and pet food manufacturing plays a significant role in our pets' lives. However, many may be surprised to learn that the dog industry is largely unregulated in the USA, raising important concerns for pet owners.
1 Dog Grooming:
The dog grooming industry is vast with countless salons mobile groomers & DIY options. Unfortunately, there is no comprehensive federal regulation for dog groomers. This means that individuals can enter the profession without standardized training or certification. Which means anyone can take their DIY experience into the world and start to apply it to other's beloved pets that may need special attention.
2 Dog Training:
Dog training services also operate without consistent federal regulation. While there are various certification programs available for trainers there's no overarching requirement for training professionals to meet specific standards or qualifications. All training methods including compulsion training are allowed in all 50 states. Which often leads to the abuse of dogs in the name of training. Furthermore, with no set standards of knowledge or experience such as a certification. Many Trainers will give little to no explanation. On their qualifications because they have little to none.
3 Dog Boarding and Sitting
Dog boarding and sitting services are booming especially with the rise of pet-sharing platforms. However the lack of uniform regulation means that the quality and safety standards across these services can vary significantly potentially affecting the well-being of our pets. 4 Dog Food Making Industry:The dog food industry is enormous, with a wide range of products available. While there are federal regulations for pet food manufacturing, critics argue that these regulations are not stringent enough, leaving room for inconsistency in ingredient quality and safety standards. And the need for more clarity on what a dog needs nutritionally.

When bringing a service dog to a library, it's important to follow proper etiquette to ensure a positive and respectful environment for all people. Here are some tips:

1. Identification: Can be helpful so that staff and other patrons are aware of the dogs' roles. But in no way is it legally required to have a service dog wair identifying markers such as a vest.

2. Behavior: Your service dog should be well-behaved and calm. It should not bark, growl, or display aggressive behavior while in the library.

3. Leash: Keep your service dog on a leash or under control at all times. This helps prevent any accidental disruptions to other library users.

4. Cleanliness: Make sure your service dog is clean and groomed to minimize shedding and dirt. Carry necessary cleanup supplies in case of accidents.

5. Quiet: Ensure your service dog remains quiet and doesn't disrupt the quiet environment of the library.

6. Respect personal space: Respect the personal space of others. Some people may have allergies, fear, or other concerns related to dogs, so be mindful of their comfort.

Reserving Disabled Bathroom Stalls for Service Dogs and Disabled Individuals: A Matter of Respect and Accessibility

In our daily lives, it's essential that we show consideration and respect for one another, especially when it comes to accommodating those with disabilities. Disabled bathroom stalls are one area where this principle can make a significant difference in someone's life. Here's why leaving these stalls empty for service dogs and disabled people is not just courteous but crucial for accessibility.

1. **Equal Access for All**: Disabled bathroom stalls are designed with specific features to make them accessible for people with disabilities. These features, such as grab bars, extra space, and often, baby-changing tables, are essential for individuals with mobility impairments. Reserving these stalls ensures that everyone can access them without barriers.

2. **Service Dogs are Lifelines**: Service dogs play an indispensable role in the lives of many individuals with disabilities. These dogs are highly trained to assist their handlers with daily tasks, including using the restroom. By leaving the disabled stall open, you enable service dogs to perform their duties effectively, ensuring the well-being and independence of their owners.

3. **Privacy and Dignity**: Disabled individuals may require more time and assistance in the bathroom due to their unique needs. Providing them with access to these stalls respects their privacy and dignity, allowing them to maintain their independence without feeling rushed or uncomfortable.

4. **Emergency Situations**: In emergency situations, every second counts. Disabled stalls are often equipped with emergency cords that alert others to distress. By keeping these stalls available, you ensure that individuals with disabilities can access help promptly when needed.

5. **A Legal and Ethical Obligation**: Many countries have laws and regulations in place that mandate accessible bathroom facilities for disabled individuals. Reserving these stalls for their use aligns with these legal requirements and demonstrates a commitment to inclusion and diversity.

6. **Fostering Empathy and Understanding**: Practicing consideration for those with disabilities fosters empathy and understanding in society. When we prioritize accessibility, we create an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. In conclusion, leaving disabled bathroom stalls empty for service dogs and disabled people is not just a matter of courtesy; it's a fundamental step towards creating an inclusive and equitable society. By doing so, we contribute to a world where everyone, regardless of their abilities, can access public facilities with ease and dignity. It's a small action that can make a big difference in the lives of others.

๐Ÿพ Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) is crucial for puppies! It involves brief exercises that can:

1. Boost stress resistance.
2. Enhance cardiovascular health.
3. Strengthen the immune system.
4. Improve problem-solving skills.
5. Increase adaptability.

ENS typically starts when puppies are just a few days old, usually between days 3 to 16 of their life. It's important to follow a structured protocol for ENS and consult with a knowledgeable breeder or veterinarian for guidance on when and how to perform these exercises to ensure the best results for the puppies' development.

ENS should be done under guidance but isn't a substitute for proper care and training. ๐Ÿถ

Ethical / good breeders should always take an interest in their puppies' development by doing ENS and are advised to do breed standard health testing.

Domino has been a cherished member of our program for the past month. While Domino continues to display remarkable intelligence, affection, and trainability, he has encountered challenges due to exposure to other dogs who unknowingly have food reactivity. Leading to difficulties in his ability to cope in many home situations. Given the current living situation and the focus on canine interactions, we have made the difficult decision to cut Domino from our program. We are actively seeking professional assistance to find him a new loving home where his unique needs can be met.

Our SDiT program will be closed until further notice. Until we can meet the needs of any future dogs in every way!

Walking a dog that pulls excessively can be challenging and may not convey a strong bond between you and your pet. Training and communication are key in teaching dogs how to walk politely on a leash. While harnesses are often used for pulling activities, there are also front-clip harnesses designed to discourage pulling during walks, but these can cause extensive damage to dogs' joints. Positive reinforcement training methods can help improve engagement and communication between you and your dog, regardless of the type of collar or harness you choose. Remember, every dog is different, so finding the right approach that suits your dog's personality and needs is crucial.

โ€œMost literature suggests that this is the most effective and least dangerous of restraining collars. The prong collar distributes pressure evenly around the neck, and requires only a small amount of forceโ€ฆIncidence of canine upper cervical subluxations is far less with the prong collar.โ€ โ€“ The Well Adjusted Dog, Dr. Daniel Kamen (Chiropractor)"

A prong collar enables you to deliver extremely gentle communication to direct your dog to follow you, without hurting them, choking them, or doing any damage at all. If you have a problem with how it looks or what people will think, itโ€™s easy to buy a prong cover or use a happy bandana.

Herm Sprenger is the best brand of prong collar. These are high quality.

How to fit a Prong Collar:
Ensure the collar is snug enough to remain high up on the dogโ€™s neck, just behind the ears. Attach the leash to the swivel on the collar. As a safety measure, clip a carabiner from the O-ring on the collar to your dogโ€™s regular collar.

Please be sure to talk to a quifid trainer before using any correctional tools on your dog. Most dogs do not need them in any way๐Ÿ’›

Happy third birthday, Candace.๐Ÿฅณ๐ŸŽŠ๐ŸŽ‰ We have been, through, so much and over come so much these past 3 years together.

I can honestly say you have seen me through the biggest changes in my life, and you have supported me and been there for me when people didn't know I needed it. Or in ways they couldn't be through tasks or emotionally.

I know our journey is far from over, and we have so much more to get through and so much more to overcome together.
Especially recently. I truly hope I can continue to be there in every way possible like you have been for me. I'm so proud of you and honored for the trust you put in me. To relearn some of the world about dogs and other people. Your progress has amazed meโค๏ธ

๐ŸšซFoster are not needed at this time until further notice ๐Ÿšซ 08/2032

Hey, everyone. we need fosters for 6-7 months.

Your job would be to take them to pet friendly stores, soccer games, farmers markets, and many more places such as stores. Basically, wherever you go, the puppy / dog goes. Whenever possible. Feed them and any other puppy supplements that will be provided by our program.
The foster is responsible for taking the puppy / dog to class in Midtown, Sac. or Rancho Cordova. On average, twice a week. At times every other week. The forster is also responsible for keeping up training when the puppy / dog is with them.

Whenever possible. We will have staff members or other volunteers. Take the puppy out for A-day and give puppy razors a break.

All fosters can call/text me or my apprentice trainer any time day 8 am - 10 pm with any questions. And text before and after those hours and will get responses ASAP with top priority.

The fosters are matched with a dog in the program, depending upon compatibility.

Breeds we will have in our program next are:
- Golden retriever
- Labrador retriever
- We are considering possibly Cocker spaniel
