Sasha is one of our wonderful veterinary assistants, and has been working in veterinary medicine for the past four years. However she says she’s been caring for animals since she was in elementary school in Japan.

She said what drove her to pursue veterinary medicine was a desire to make the “animal’s pain go away, since they can't tell you in words.”

“Seeing pets get better, and seeing how much I’ve learned,’ is one of the most rewarding parts of being a vet assistant.

She finds fulfillment in caring for animals and working alongside a close-knit team. Inspired to pursue a career in veterinary medicine by her love for animals.

Sasha quickly realized how rewarding it is to make a positive impact on their lives.
“I love seeing the improvement in pets’ health after we provide treatment. Knowing that I helped make that happen is incredibly rewarding,” she said.

She’s an avid avian career, volunteering to foster birds with the SPCA. One of her favorite experiences in pet care is rehabilitating birds to make them more adoptable.

In addition to her hands-on work with pets, Sasha is passionate about continuing education, always seeking new opportunities to expand her knowledge and better serve the animals in her care.

She encourages those interested in veterinary medicine to be curious constantly and motivated to try new things.

“Be open-minded,” she said. “Medicine is always changing!”

Brooke is an RVT at Natomas and has been part of the veterinary field for more than nine years.

Her passion for animals and the opportunity to be deeply involved in their care inspired her to pursue this career.

“The most rewarding part of my job is improving the quality of life for the pets,” she said.

One of her most memorable experiences in veterinary medicine involved monitoring anesthesia on mom who was expecting three puppies but ended up having 11.

Outside of work, Brooke is a proud mom to her son, and pet parent to two cats and three dogs, including a 9-year-old lab/border collie mix, a lab and a Doxie.

Her advice for anyone considering a career in veterinary medicine is to “go to school, either as a tech or in veterinary medicine,” as well as take continuing education courses for licensing.

For Vet Tech Week, we’re excited to feature Madison, a veterinary assistant at Natomas and a full-time student at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

Madison’s journey toward becoming a veterinarian has been shaped by her hands-on clinical experience at Natomas, where she’s learned what it truly means to care for animals in a clinical setting.

“Natomas has been my first real clinical experience, and it’s taught me so much,” Madison shares. “I got to see the doctors at work, assist them with cases, and really understand what goes into caring for animals on a day-to-day basis. It gave me a clearer idea of what it means to be in this field.”

Before starting at Natomas, Madison completed her undergraduate degree in animal science at UC Davis, working on research projects with animals like donkeys, cows and chickens.

While she found research fascinating, her time at Natomas helped her realize that her true calling was clinical veterinary medicine.

“I think working here before starting vet school set me up for success,” she said. “There are things they bring up in school where I think, ‘Oh, we prescribe that all the time. I know why we do that.’ Seeing treatments in real-life cases has given me a practical edge.”

As the dry season continues, it’s not just the heat that poses risks to our pets—dry, tall grass can be a hidden danger.

Foxtails, which thrive in dry grass, can easily get stuck in a pet’s paws, nose, ears, or even eyes. Recently, Ms. Ruff Ruff had to visit the vet after a foxtail got lodged in her eye. Luckily, she’s on the mend, but foxtails can cause severe pain, infection, and even require surgery if not caught early.

In addition to foxtails, dry grass can conceal sharp objects and be home to ticks and other pests. To keep your pets safe, avoid letting them roam in dry, grassy areas, check them thoroughly after walks, and keep them hydrated in the heat.

If your pet shows signs of discomfort or you spot a foxtail, don’t wait—bring them to the vet right away.

Chocolate contains theobromine, which is toxic to dogs, and even small amounts can lead to serious health issues.

On average, 1 in 4 emergency vet visits around Halloween are related to chocolate ingestion. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning can range from vomiting and diarrhea to seizures and heart problems. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are especially dangerous, as they contain higher levels of theobromine than milk chocolate.

If your dog accidentally eats chocolate, don’t wait—call Natomas Veterinary Hospital at 916-925-3535 or the Pet Poison Helpline at 855-764-7661.

Provide details on the type and amount of chocolate consumed, and follow their guidance. Fast action can make all the difference in keeping your dog safe and healthy this Halloween!

It's the start of the spooky season, and it’s important to remember that many of the treats and decorations we enjoy can be dangerous for pets. Chocolate, xylitol (found in sugar-free candies), and even glow sticks are all harmful if ingested.

At Natomas, we want to ensure your pets stay safe while you celebrate. Keep candy out of reach, and if your pet gets into something they shouldn’t, give us a call or reach out to the Pet Poison Helpline.

We routinely utilize blood smears as a critical diagnostic tool to assess your pet's overall health. Blood smears allow us to examine the quality and quantity of blood cells, providing insights into conditions such as anemia, infections, and other hematologic disorders.

Ensuring accurate and timely diagnosis is key to providing the best care for your furry family members.
