Since 1892, we’ve worked to reduce pet overpopulation through affordable spay/neuter services, promote the humane treatment of animals through education and outreach, and assist pet owners through a variety of programs and services designed to keep pets and their families together for life.

After a traumatic injury left Scotty in need of multiple surgeries, a partnering shelter reached out to us for help. While they were able to remove his eye, Scotty also needed a leg amputation, so he was transferred to the Sacramento SPCA to get the care he needed. Luckily for Scotty, our Paws for Health fund helps animals just like him and now he’s ready to find his new family!

with Chipper!
When Chipper originally arrived at the Sacramento SPCA, he was terribly matted and NOT a happy camper. As we attempted to find rescue options, we scheduled him for a neuter and sedated groom to keep him comfortable. When he woke up from surgery he was a completely different dog!
Sure, he still has some “get off my lawn” vibes, but he is much happier overall! So much so that he’s now available for adoption!

In the role of “before coffee,” we have Harley a two year old Shih/Poo who has lived with cats and has a great underbite!
“After coffee” is played by Bitty - a 2 year old scruffy Terrier that has lived with kids and should probably stick to decaf.

Helllllooooo Dolly!
This Great Dane beauty was surrendered by her family due to moving. Unfortunately on the morning before she arrived, she got in a tussle with a raccoon which meant she needed to spend 30 days on quarantine. 😫
Needless to say, she’s pretty much over the shelter life despite our efforts to make her quarantine comfortable. Dolly is deaf so she can get startled easily if she can’t see you coming. She knows sit via hand signals and weighs about 85lbs.

A sweet for your afternoon:
“Once upon a time, I visited SPCA with the hope of finding a furry friend to bring home. As I walked through the shelter, I came across a tiny, adorable puppy who immediately stole my heart. She was only 3 months old, a mix of Chihuahua and Dachshund, and I knew right then and there that she was meant to be part of my family. I named her Lola Bleu, and from that moment on, she became my everything.
Lola quickly settled into her new home and formed an unbreakable bond with my brother's dog named Cookie. They became inseparable, always playing together and taking care of each other. It was heartwarming to see how well they got along. Lola's favorite toys are rubber balls that squeaked, and she would spend hours chasing them around the house, her eyes lighting up with joy.
One of Lola's favorite activities is going on walks. She loves exploring the neighborhood, her tail wagging with excitement at every new scent. Her favorite snacks are blueberries and carrots. Whenever I gave her a blueberry, she would toss it in the air and jump around, her happiness evident in every playful move.
Lola is also an excellent traveler. She loves car rides
and was always up for an adventure. She also loves going to brunch with me. Despite having trouble with one of her back legs, which sometimes caused her to walk on three legs instead of four, she never let it slow her down. She would run around and play with boundless energy, her spirit undeterred by any physical challenges.
I am forever grateful to the SPCA for bringing Lola into my life. She has brought so much love, joy, and adventure into my world, and I love her to death. Thank you, SPCA, for giving me my lovely Lola Bleu.”

#Pupdate for Edd (Now Chico): I adopted Edd, who is now named Chico, as a surprise for my mom’s 65th birthday in May 2024 after our family pup, Ziggy, crossed over the rainbow bridge in June 2023. I originally planned on getting a slightly larger dog but I didn’t stand a chance once I met Chico. He without a doubt chose us, with help from Ziggy. Chico has been a wonderful addition to our family. He enjoys spending time with all family members, neighbors, and even strangers. Chico’s favorite activities include hanging out with his pup nephews, Winston and Diesel, and chasing his mom around the garden. We can’t thank you enough for helping bring us together, rest assured Chico will be loved and taken care of for the rest of his life.

Did you know that our Kong volunteers distributed 8,579 Kongs to the dogs in our care last year? Needless to say, we go through A LOT of peanut butter, pumpkin, cinnamon, and biscuits to help keep animals like Timber (pictured here) happy and stress-free during their stay with us. It's time to re-stock our Kong pantry with supplies and we need your help! Our volunteers have specifically asked for creamy peanut butter (xylitol-free), canned 100% pure pumpkin, cinnamon, and Large/XL Kongs. These items can be purchased from one of our wishlists at sspca.org/our-wishlist or dropped off at the shelter during business hours.
