Who can't resist Milo's puppy dog eyes? He is really as sweet as he looks. After Milo's parents adopted him from the Sacramento SPCA, they contacted me to get him started on the right foot with building their relationship and learn basic obedience. This smart boy had zero obedience skills, and has already learned how to sit, come and lay down. We can't wait to see him learn more and blossom in his forever home.

We're super proud of Natasha and her progress! Today, we took a field trip to the local park and worked on ignoring distractions. She did an awesome job on focusing on her dad instead of the kids at play and other dogs that were out for a stroll.

Another successful training session with Natasha!

Natasha's back story is that she was a puppy mill dog used for strictly breeding. The breeder surrendered Natasha and her litter to a rescue group for reasons unknown. Natasha hit the jackpot with her new dad when he decided to rescue her. He understood Natasha was different compared to other rescue dogs. He knew it would take some time to bond with her but hit a point where he wanted some help and support.

Puppy mill dogs are special in that they trust other dogs over humans because they typically are not socialized with humans.

Natasha's dad has been committed to our training plan and putting in the work to build their relationship. In our last session, I was even able to finally work hands-on with Natasha, which was a huge milestone for her because she's slow to trust just any person.

I'm looking forward to sharing Natasha's journey and seeing how it unfolds.

I first met Natasha about a month ago after her dad asked for help on improving his relationship with his newly rescued girl. She loves other dogs, does well in dog playgroups, but is unsure about new people. During our training program, we're working on building a better relationship between Natasha and her dad, and creating positive experiences between Natasha and new people. Today, we had a breakthrough when Natasha accepted treats from my hand. Way to go, Natasha!

The weather forecast prediction is the temperature won't be under 90 degrees until after 9pm tonight. It's best to walk your pets in the early morning or late night because hot pavement will burn their paw pads. Even walking on hot grass can burn paw pads. Save your dog from unnecessary injury and an emergency veterinarian visit, and keep them inside.

Many home insurance companies have breed discriminatory policies: https://bit.ly/32avzxF. And it is not just dogs deemed to be “pit bulls.” Depending on the insurance company, the most frequently banned breeds include, but are not limited to, pitties, rotties, chows, akitas, dobies, bulldogs, shar-peis, weimaraners, and many others.

But that may soon be illegal in New York as state legislators have passed a bill mandating that “no insurer shall refuse to issue or renew, cancel, or charge or impose an increased premium or rate for such policy or contract based solely upon harboring or owning any dog of a specific breed or mixture of breeds”: https://bit.ly/3wAutce. The bill will save lives, keep families together, and foster fairness. Studies have shown that:

- 50% of dogs labeled as pit bulls lack DNA breed signatures of breeds commonly classified as pit bulls;

- Banned or discriminated “breeds” of dogs are not more likely to bite, do not bite harder, and such bans do not result in fewer dog bites or bite-related hospitalization rates;

- Treating “breeds” differently does not yield public benefits: http://bit.ly/3p2j6Gp.

If you live in another state or don’t want to wait, State Farm does not discriminate. According to the company, “Any dog, regardless of breed, can bite, and most bites are the perfect storm of situation and circumstance. People often put themselves and others at risk, and dogs are blamed. That’s why State Farm focuses on dog bite prevention education rather than breed restrictions”: https://bit.ly/32avzxF.

If you are not insured by a company like State Farm, perhaps it is time to switch. Even if you do not live with a dog that is banned by your insurer, do you really want to support one that embraces such cruel and discriminatory policies — policies that can mean a dog loses his home or misses out on an adoption?

Did you know how your pets food is packaged and stored is just as important as what is in the food?

Today the FDA issued a pet food recall for dog food that was found to have mold, and 28 deaths have been reported for dogs that consumed that particular dog food.

The mold produced a toxin, identified as Aflatoxin, and can grow on corn and other grains used as ingredients in pet food. At high levels, aflatoxin can cause pets to become ill and even die in severe cases. Pets experiencing aflatoxin poisoning could have symptoms including sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice (yellowish tint to the eyes or gums due to liver damage), and diarrhea.

Sometimes the mold can be caused by moisture trapped inside of the packaging. While you can't control how companies package your pets food, how long the food is stored in a warehouse or on a retail store shelf, or even the temperatures it is subjected to, you do have control on how you store the bag of food after purchase. Cool, dry place and out of the direct sunlight is best.
