Bell’s Grooming Journey – A Senior Dog’s Spa Day

What do you mean, Terra, you’re not a groomer?

No, I’m not. And I don’t take grooming cases… unless they’re behavior cases.

But Bell’s situation was different. This wasn’t really a behavior case—it was about compassion.

Bell, a sweet senior pup, came in today needing some serious grooming before her vet appointment tomorrow. Her owners had been struggling to get her groomed because she simply can’t stand for long periods anymore. The last time she was groomed, the team at We Love Paws did an amazing job, but her soft coat mats easily, especially with the harness she wears daily.

So today, I took the time to do it differently.

I sat on the ground with Bell, making sure she was as comfortable as possible. We worked at her pace, combing and brushing out her mats—because let’s be real, grooming out mats is never comfortable, and with her hip dysplasia, I had to be extra gentle.

Then, we moved to the tub. I’m in the process of setting up a specialized de-shedding tub at Paws N’ Play, which would have been a game changer today. It’s a grooming-grade water pressure system that would have helped loosen and rinse away more of that trapped fur without as much brushing. But today, we did it the old-fashioned way—scrubbing, rinsing, and blow-drying as best we could.

By the end, Bell was exhausted. We gave her two 60mg doses of CBD throughout the process to help keep her comfortable, but I knew I had to stop when she had reached her limit. I focused on making sure she was clean and free of bacteria, but I didn’t push for a perfect finish. Her well-being came first.

This is not something I normally do, but today, my heart told me I needed to.

Did I charge for it? No.

Did her owners tip me heavily? Yes.

And honestly, I appreciate it—because my arms are sore! But more than anything, my heart is full knowing that Bell will feel so much better tonight without all that extra hair weighing her down.

Our Wednesday Night CGC Classes are a drop-in class for just $25 per session, making it easy and flexible for you and your dog to join whenever you’re ready to work on Canine Good Citizen (CGC) skills.

What Your Dog Will Work On:

The CGC program focuses on building good manners and reliable behavior in real-world settings. Each class will help dogs and their handlers practice and refine the 10 test items required for CGC certification, including:

✅ Accepting a Friendly Stranger – Your dog should remain calm and polite when greeted.
✅ Sitting Politely for Petting – Helps build confidence around new people.
✅ Appearance & Grooming – Prepares your dog for vet visits and grooming.
✅ Loose Leash Walking – Encourages polite walking without pulling.
✅ Walking Through a Crowd – Teaches focus and composure in public spaces.
✅ Sit, Down, & Stay on Command – Strengthens basic obedience.
✅ Coming When Called – Reinforces a reliable recall.
✅ Reaction to Another Dog – Encourages calm and appropriate social behavior.
✅ Reaction to Distractions – Helps dogs remain focused even with distractions.
✅ Supervised Separation – Builds confidence when handled by a stranger.

This class is open to all dogs looking to improve manners, build confidence, and prepare for the CGC test—whether you’re working toward certification or just want a well-behaved companion. Since it’s a drop-in format, you can attend as often as needed to focus on specific skills.

Join us Wednesday nights to set your dog up for success!

JoJo has been in my life for about six years now, and wow, what a journey it’s been. We’ve faced so many behavioral challenges together, and recently, we’ve been tackling some struggles with his little body too.

That’s why I’m so grateful for Thrive Animal Rehab, right next door. We’ve only had two acupuncture sessions (plus an evaluation and some PT homework), and I’ve already seen the most AMAZING progress. JoJo’s walking better, resting better, and overall just seems so much more comfortable in his own skin. It’s been incredible to watch.

If your pup is dealing with pain, mobility issues, or anything rehab-related, I can’t recommend Thrive enough. They’ve truly changed JoJo’s quality of life, and I couldn’t be happier. ❤️

At Paws N' Play, we believe in the power of Acupuncture for dogs, offering innovative and compassionate care for our community's pets.

So, I’ve been super delayed in sharing this news, but we made it onto the Top Dog Trainers of 2024 list by Sacramento Favorites! 🎉 Honestly, I’ve been so busy that time just got away from me… but if I’m being totally real, part of me was holding off because I really, really wanted to snag that #1 spot. 😅

But once again, Miranda and All Stage Canine Developmenttook the crown (seriously, do they ever sleep?). Huge congrats to them—it’s well-deserved! I made sure to give them their credit because they work so hard. That said... Miranda, if you’re reading this, just know I’ll be smirking at you next time I see you. 😉 One day, we’ll beat you. One day!

In all seriousness, this is such an honor, and I’m so grateful to be part of Sacramento’s amazing dog training community. The support from all of you—our clients, your dogs, and everyone cheering us on—means the world. Thank you for believing in what we do and letting us be part of your dog’s journey. 🐾

Here’s to working even harder and continuing to grow. Watch out, Miranda Viani we’re coming for that #1 spot! 😂
