Managing expectations

You take your dog to the groomer. This is exciting like it is when your getting a nice haircut at the salon. You have a picture in your head of what you want your pooch to look like. Your looking forward to the super clean and soft cuddles afterwards. You want that show cut or picture you found online. You want them to feel pampered.

What you may not know is what exactly your asking for from your your self, your groomer AND from your dog. Here are some other things to consider to achieve that perfect vision of a groom.

1. Does your vision match the coat type of your dog? Silky hair will look different than a combination coat or poodles coat.
2. What is the condition of your dogs coat?
Is it damaged, broken, dry, compacted with undercoat or matted?
3. How does your dog behave at the groomers?
Is he calm enough to be safe around razor sharp tools? Is your dog accustomed to this process and therefore will be calm, comfortable and COOPERATIVE enough for this haircut?

Here are some things to help you on your way to that amazing vision of your pup after their groom.
1. Start grooming your dog when they are young.
2. Get them on a regular schedule so they are accustomed to this normal activity and not confused or fearful.
3. Make certain to brush your dog often! 3x a week or more. Mats are detrimental to your dog and that haircut.

We cannot emphasize enough the dangers of retractable leashes!

Even the most savvy dog-walkers have no control if the lock decides to break on a retractable leash. It isn't worth the risk!

Opt for a traditional nylon leash instead!

Hope all are enjoying the summer weather. Remember to consider your pets with plenty of cool water and access to shade, also remember the pavement is hot when you are walking your dog allow the to walk in the grass not on the pavement.

DOODLES! (And others)

The perfect photo to show how matting happens at the base (or at the skin). So many doodle owners are saddened to hear the only thing I can do with their pups coat is a shave because they thought brushing the top coat was enough. By looking at this dog, you may not see the knots and you may not feel them as you would a knot on the ends of the fur but once it starts its very difficult/ impossible to brush/COMB out... Not to mention it would be cruel to put the dog through. A quick once over will not work for these guys if you want them in a fuzzy coat. You really need to sit down with a metal comb and make sure you can get it through the entire body a couple times a week.

Often times I feel like owners don't believe groomers when they say the dogs has to be clipped. I always hear "I know he/she is matted, but leave as much as you can"... this photo shows, the only way to get UNDER the matting is nothing left.
I promise you, I'd rather not clip your baby naked either! I also don't want to hurt my reputation when the clients go around complaining about how the last groomer "scalped" their dog....But doodles are easily one of the highest maintenance dogs in reference to their coats. The combination of the soft coat of a golden, or aussie, or newf, or wheaten, or whatever they are mixing poodles with these days is a coat that is SO prone to matting. And even more so are the new "double doodles" that i like to call "double maintenance".

I even find some doodles on a regular schedule still need to be clipped once or twice a year (maybe not shaved, but maybe teddy bear length for a fresh start) because after all of the brushing and de-matting, the damaged coat seems to become even MORE likely to matt.
If you like a fluffy pup, you probably need to consider no more than 3-5 week intervals between grooming AND set aside time for regular COMBING at home. A doodle grooming STARTS at $125 (with my service) so make sure you’ve set aside that budget.

Please know, if you bathe your doodle you really need to blow dry and brush out right after. MOISTURE of any kind; be it a bath, rain, swimming, snow etc are all going to amplify matting. And if you know your dog is already matted-- bathing is only going to make it worse! Brush out BEFORE the bath.

AND!!!!! "breeders" who say they can't/shouldnt be clipped and OR not to give them a hair cut until they are 1 year are out of their minds and setting you up for a SAD SAD SAD day when you finally take your pup to the groomer.

To all of our clients: first and foremost we hope that you are all healthy and safe. We know that all our furry friends are probably getting scruffy and looking to expend some pent up energy and like us, mingle with their friends. Unfortunately due to the extended Stay home government mandate we will not be able to open our doors until May 1st, 2020. We will be opening then at 7 AM unless we are told otherwise by the Governor. We do miss our furry friends and are eagerly waiting to see them. Some tips we can give you are brush, brush, and brush some more. If you are going to bath your pets at home make sure they are mat free before the bath, water will only tighten the mats further. Make sure as well as brushing you are using a comb to get down to the skin, and concentrate on the legs, chest, ears, face, and tail. You can call Hairy Paws Day Center with any questions or concerns you may have about your pets during this time, also you may call to schedule appointments. We are available at 989-792-2900 for you between the hours of 8 AM till 6 PM. Please be safe and take care. Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Due to the state mandate we are temporarily closed. We will be reopening Tuesday April 14th at 7am unless mandated otherwise. We appreciate your patronage and are doing our best to comply as well as serve you and your pets. Please be safe and we will see you soon.

Dear clients we at Hairy Paws Day Center would like to address your concerns during these uncertain times. We are still open during our normal hours to care for your furbabies grooming needs, as well as giving them some socialization and exercise in our daycare.

We are increasing our cleaning and disinfecting our facility, as well as our staff washing their hands on a frequent basis. We do have minimal staff and are maintaining our distance. There is usually no more than two clients in our lobby area at a time and that is the only area are clients are allowed.

We will come out to your vehicle and get your pets if you feel safer doing that just give us a call when you get here. We will also bring your pet out to you when you pick them up again just call us when you get here.

If you still do not feel safe we understand. We only ask that if you have an appt. and decide not to keep it please call us ahead of time so that we may fill that appt. slot.

We are continually monitoring the situation and are doing everything we can to keep you and your furbabies safe. If there are any changes in our hours of operation we will keep you informed.

Please be safe.
