Meet the Staff
Dr. Norma Haupt is the owner and operator of Animal Wellness Center. She earned her D.V.M. at the University of Florida in 1989; she also holds an M.A. from Seton Hall University and a B.A. from Hofstra University. She was a social worker for fourteen years in Newark, NJ, before embarking on her veterinary career. She is a certified veterinary acupuncturist and now teaches animal acupuncture at the Chi Institute of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine in Reddick. Dr. Norma’s background includes a course in canine rehabilitation, as well as teaching police officers to protect their drug detection dogs from accidental overdose, and she is currently working on certification in food therapy. A board member at St. Augustine Regional Veterinary Emergency Center, she was co-owner of Animal House Calls from 1993-2007 and before that worked at Moultrie Animal Hospital and Lawndale Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Norma has four children; she and her husband enjoy tandem bicycling and share their home with two dogs, one cat, and a goat.
Dr. Julie Peerson earned her D.V.M. from the University of Georgia in 1991; she was the owner and operator of Companion Animal Hospital in Live Oak, FL, for seventeen years before selling it and moving to the beach! She came aboard at AWC in 2013, seeing patients and performing surgery. Dr. Julie lists her 29-year marriage and raising a great daughter among her many achievements; she loves working out at the gym and is an active member of her church.
Robert Miller is the lead veterinary technician at Animal Wellness, with us since 2010. He performs a full range of duties, including appointment scheduling, client education, and animal handling & safety during exams; he also assists during surgeries and dental treatments. He specializes in acupuncture support, keeping animals calm during treatment, and in working with aggressive animals. Robert also works as a pet sitter, because he loves the opportunity it gives him to spend time with all sorts of different animals. He recently bought his first home and loves kayaking, being outdoors, and traveling.
Kaitlynn Gabbard joined the team at AWC in November of 2018; she handles all front desk duties, as well as being responsible for AWC email, all ordering and purchasing, billing, and product rebates. She recently began providing support in acupuncture treatment, expanding her extensive personal experience with dogs and cats. Kaitlynn holds an A.A. in criminal justice from St. John’s River State College; she enjoys drawing and is a country music fan.
Sue Harriss has been with Animal Wellness since 2008, working primarily as a veterinary technician specializing in acupuncture support, holding and calming animals during acupuncture treatment. She provides additional support as needed to keep patients happy and healthy, performing intake functions and filling prescriptions. Sue was raised on a farm in Deland and has always worked with animals, including horses; most recently she visited the white lions of Timbavate in South Africa. She is licensed in animal communication and energy healing by Communication With All Life University in Santa Clarita, CA, and is a licensed master in Avatar self-empowerment training. Sue’s BS in marketing from U Florida led to her background in finance and real estate.
Lori Biek is part-time office manager at AWC, having taken on various responsibilities since the clinic opened in 2007. Originally from Michigan, she moved to St. Augustine in 1999 and fell in love with the beach. A lifetime animal lover, she has extensive experience in pet care and worked previously at Jackson Veterinary Hospital.
