Help your dog resist temptation by mastering the "leave it" cue! 🐶 Dr. Andy, our Fear Free Certified Trainer, walks us through some helpful training tips:🐾 Practice where you need it most - places like the kitchen where we may drop things we don't want our pets to have.🐾 Always reward your dog with something "better" than what you are asking them to leave. For example. when training, start by having them leave Cheerios and reward them with cheese.🐾 Don't reward your dog with what you are asking them to leave. You want "leave it" to mean leave it permanently for your dog. That way they don't pause when you ask them to leave something dangerous like ibuprofen and then try to grab it.🐾 Keep a positive tone. This cue in particular tends to come out very stern or harsh, especially when we are nervous and need our dogs to leave something right away. However, when we raise our voices, it's far more likely we're going to start all our dogs and they're going to rush forward and grab the item in a panic and run away.
