🐾 Keep Your Pets Stress-Free This Holiday Season! 🐾

The holidays are a time for celebration, but they can be overwhelming for our furry friends. As a Fear Free Certified Veterinarian, we're sharing some simple tips to help your pets feel safe and relaxed during holiday gatherings:

🐾 Set up a safe, calm space where they can retreat to relax—this could be a separate room or a cozy crate with their favorite blanket and toys. This "safe zone" will give them a retreat when they need it.

🐾 Pets thrive on consistency, especially in the midst of holiday chaos. Try to maintain your pet's usual feeding, exercise, and play schedule.

🐾 Let your pet approach guests on their own terms, and avoid forcing interaction.

🐾 If your pet is particularly anxious, consider using calming products like noise machine, Thundershirts, or prescribed anti-anxiety meds.

🐾 If your pet starts showing signs of stress—like panting, whining, hiding, or trying to escape—give them a break and allow them to retreat to their safe space.

🐾 Use treats or praise to help your pet feel more relaxed with their interactions with guests.

🐾 Meet Tash Bartow, one of Loyal Companion's amazing veterinary technicians! 🐶🐱

"Animals have always held a special place in my heart. There was always a furry friend in my home growing up. I was an avid horseback rider during my adolescence and early teenage years.

I always knew I wanted a career working with animals and I was lucky enough to be hired at Loyal Companions in 2019. I love being able to see our kitten and puppy patients grow into amazing adults and care for our senior pets that have lived such amazing lives! The care we bring to veterinary medicine is unparalleled. The Fear Free approach to veterinary care has taught me so much about animal behavior and communication and I will forever be grateful for that.

In my free time I enjoy spending time with my husband renovating our home. I also enjoy reading and watching documentaries. We do not have a furry friend at home just yet, but once our renovations are completed a senior feline will have a very happy home with us!"

🎃 Keep your pets safe this Halloween by avoiding these spooky snacks!

🍫 Chocolate — Although tasty, chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to pets. Chocolate toxicity may cause vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, elevated body temperature, heart problems, or death.

🍭 Xylitol — This sugar substitute is commonly found in sugar-free candy, gum, and baked goods. In pets, xylitol causes a rapid drop in blood sugar that can lead to seizures, coma, liver failure, or death.

🍇 Raisins and grapes — Grapes and raisins contain tartaric acid, which can cause kidney failure in dogs.

🍬 Wrapped candies — Although not all candy is toxic, wrappers can still pose a threat. Dogs who swallow large amounts of foil or plastic as they gobble down a pile of candy can suffer intestinal blockages.

If you think your pet may have ingested any of these, call your veterinarian immediately!

Meet Leticia, one of Loyal Companion's dedicated veterinary technicians! 🐾

"I earned my degree in veterinary technology from Parkland College in 2003. I love that within this field, I can do several tasks and take care of many different kinds of animals. I have been fortunate to work with not only cats and dogs, but also exotic pets including birds, reptiles and small mammals.

I am so grateful to be a part of Loyal Companions. When I first heard about the Fear Free approach, I knew this was the direction I wanted to take in helping pets. By keeping our patients as calm and happy as possible, we do the same for pet parents. It is an overall better experience for everyone. My favorite part of coming in to work is having people tell me how much his or her pet loves coming to our practice.

I live in St. Charles with my husband and 2 children. We have a pit bull named Phoenix who keeps us busy.

I enjoy spending time with family and friends. My hobbies include reading, watching movies and dancing."

2 things you should know about your pet's dental health:
🦷 Your pet should be getting yearly dental cleanings
🦷 Not all pet dental cleanings are created equal

At Loyal Companions, we strive for providing the most comprehensive care for your pets, including their oral health. That's why our dental exams include a full mouth radiograph.

Our veterinary technician, Elizabeth explains:
"As a pet owner that has worked in the VetMed field for 13 years, I have always performed an annual dental cleaning with full mouth radiographs on my pets. Last year, I took my dog Louise in for her annual professional dental cleaning under the assumption that we would clean her teeth, take the updated x-rays, and that would be that. We almost immediately discovered a tooth root abscess on one of Louise's bottom molars. I often checked her teeth before this procedure, but there was nothing abnormal visible to the naked eye. Dental radiographs (commonly referred to as x-rays) are a crucial part of an anesthetic dental procedure. There is a great deal of a tooth that you cannot see above the gum line. Had I not taken those images, Louise would have been in a great deal of pain and could have suffered issues with the integrity of her jaw bone itself, leaving it susceptible to jaw fracture and infection. Our standard of care here at Loyal Companions is to take full mouth dental radiographs on EVERY patient that comes to see us for a professional dental procedure."

Recently, we adopted our foster dog. He had a terrible experience with the vet we had to use while we were fostering him and were thrilled to bring him to Loyal Companions as soon as he was officially adopted. Our new dog went from an animal who had to be heavily sedated from growling and lunging at staff in the previous vet office to a dog who laid calmly and allowed the entire exam to happen without a single sign of stress with Dr. Petsche and Tash. I can't begin to explain our relief!

The staff here take their time and never make you feel rushed in the office or on the phone. I feel like this practice caters to us "crazy pet parents" who treat our animals as if they are our children. They use a variety of methods to keep visits "fear free" from anxiety medication to calming caps to high reward treats. Thank you, Loyal Companions!!"

Meet Lindsey, one of our Loyal Certified Veterinary Technicians! 👋🏼🐾

“I graduated from Joliet Junior College in 2009 with an Associate’s in Animal Medicine. I grew up in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, but have been living in the Bartlett/South Elgin area for the last 20 years.

I began working as a C.V.T. in ER medicine and quickly loved using the skill sets that I learned to help very sick patients. Since then I’ve worked with exotic animals (reptiles, birds, rabbits, ferrets) and in day practices that take care of cats and dogs. I’ve currently been working at Loyal Companions Fear Free practice since May 2017, which I feel is where the veterinary field should be moving towards to provide the best care for their patients. I am so proud to say that I’m a part of this movement every day.

In my free time I love spending time with my husband, daughter, and son. They keep me busy with gymnastics and dirt bike racing.

My hobbies include auto racing and gardening.

Help your dog resist temptation by mastering the "leave it" cue! 🐶 Dr. Andy, our Fear Free Certified Trainer, walks us through some helpful training tips:🐾 Practice where you need it most - places like the kitchen where we may drop things we don't want our pets to have.🐾 Always reward your dog with something "better" than what you are asking them to leave. For example. when training, start by having them leave Cheerios and reward them with cheese.🐾 Don't reward your dog with what you are asking them to leave. You want "leave it" to mean leave it permanently for your dog. That way they don't pause when you ask them to leave something dangerous like ibuprofen and then try to grab it.🐾 Keep a positive tone. This cue in particular tends to come out very stern or harsh, especially when we are nervous and need our dogs to leave something right away. However, when we raise our voices, it's far more likely we're going to start all our dogs and they're going to rush forward and grab the item in a panic and run away.
