🦷 Dental Case of the Month! 🦷

Take a look through the pictures and videos to watch "Mama's" transformation from severe dental disease to full mouth extractions and a pain-free life! ❤️ 🐾🐈🐾❤️

🔹 ️That's a wrap on February's Dental Health Month! We hope you have enjoyed learning about dental health, and if you would like to learn more visit our page. We have made a post on dental health each day this month.

🔹 ️We encourage you to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian to have an oral exam performed and a consultation for a COHAT: Complete Oral Health Assessment and Treatment, commonly referred to as a "dental."

🔹 ️Dental disease is one of the most overlooked and neglected areas of pet health care. Don't allow your pet to keep living with infection and pain!

🔹️ Be sure to have your pet's mouth evaluated by a veterinarian that utilizes dental x-rays! X-rays are critical to make sure disease does not go undetected!

🦷 February is Pet Dental Health Month! 🦷

Dental Disease #9: Stomatitis

🦷 Stomatitis is a disease that affects cats, although there is a less common canine form.

🦷 Stomatitis is severe inflammation of the gingiva and mucosa that is worse at the sides and the back of the mouth.

🦷 This disease causes severe pain often leading to any combination of the following: decreased grooming, hiding, bad breath, dropping food, hissing/growling at food, drooling, reluctance to eat, and weight loss.

🦷 Early detection is key in treatment - this is one of the biggest reasons your cat should see a veterinarian at least once every year!

🦷 The treatment of choice is extraction of all teeth or all teeth behind the canines depending on the extent of disease.

🦷 The earlier in the course of disease the teeth are extracted, the better chance these cats have at a complete cure.

Dental Disease #8: Resorptive Lesions

🦷 A resorptive lesion is erosion of the dentin which is a hard layer of tooth under the enamel leading to destruction of a portion of the tooth.

🦷 These are much more common in cats than dogs. 🐈‍⬛

🦷 This may affect the crown or the root of the tooth or both.

🦷 Resorptive lesions can be small or very large.

🦷 While cats infrequently show signs of discomfort at home, these are PAINFUL. Cats will frequently chatter if these are touched directly.

🦷 The only treatment is extraction of the affected tooth.

🦷 February is Pet Dental Health Month! 🦷

Dental Disease #7: Stage 4 Periodontal Disease

🦷 Stage 4 periodontal disease is the last stage of damage of the supportive structures around a tooth and is defined as 50% or more loss of attachment.

🦷 This diagnosis is made with the pet under anesthesia and radiographs taken of the teeth.

🦷 Stage 4 periodontal disease occurs in all breeds of dogs and cats but is most common in older toy and small breed dogs.

🦷 Teeth in stage 4 periodontal disease require extraction.

🪥 Daily oral home care starting with toothbrushing is the most effective way to help prevent periodontal disease.

🔹️ Early professional dental cleanings under anesthesia by your veterinarian followed with daily toothbrushing and other forms of oral care can help prevent dental disease from progressing to this stage.

Dental Disease #6: Tooth Root Abscess

🦷 Patients with a tooth root abscess usually come in to the veterinarian for a large painful swelling on the cheek just under the eye.

🦷 Pressure from pus accumulation builds up at the root of the tooth and erupts out the side of the face.

🦷 All affected teeth in the area must be extracted and antibiotics are needed. The opposite side of the mouth must also be closely evaluated - it is very common for disease to be similar in the same teeth on both sides of the mouth.

🦷 February is Pet Dental Health Month! 🦷

Dental Disease #5: Upper 4th Premolar Fracture

🦷 The upper 4th premolar is the large pointed tooth near the back of the mouth in cats and dogs.

🦷 This tooth commonly fractures when dogs chew on hard items such as bones, deer antlers, or rocks. (See our Feb 16th post for a more complete list)

🦷 These fractures are often painful.

🦷 Bacteria enters the dentin which is the layer under the enamel. Bacteria will also travel up the pulp chamber if exposed. Over time, infection will destroy the roots, periodontal ligament, and surrounding bone.

🦷 Referral to a veterinary dentist for a root canal and restoration is an option if caught early and the roots are healthy. The other option is extraction.

🦷 February is Pet Dental Health Month! 🦷

Dental Disease #4: Unerupted Teeth

🦷 All adult teeth should erupt through the gingiva by the time cats and dogs are 6 months old.

🦷 The most common teeth that fail to erupt through the gingiva are the premolars which are the few teeth just behind the canines.

🦷 Unerupted teeth must be identified with dental x-rays. Sometimes the tooth never developed and is simply missing.

🦷 If a normal tooth is found just under the gumline in young cats and dogs a simple incision through the gumline can be made and time allowed to see if the tooth erupts into the normal position.

🦷 In older cats and dogs unerupted teeth commonly cause cyst formation and must be extracted.

🦷 February is Pet Dental Health Month! 🦷

Dental Disease #3: Retained Deciduous Tooth

🔹️ A retained deciduous tooth is a baby tooth that isn't pushed out by the permanent tooth. The permanent tooth erupts in front of or beside the deciduous tooth and both teeth are in the same "spot."

🔹️ The deciduous tooth harms the permanent tooth by interfering with the development of the permanent tooth's periodontal ligament.

🔹️ Both teeth crowded together causes excess tartar formation leading to disease of the gingiva, periodontal ligament, and bone.

🔹️ Because the deciduous tooth interferes with the normal placement of the permanent tooth, malocclusions can occur - this means upper teeth are in abnormal contact with lower teeth. This can be so severe the pet can't close the mouth properly causing long term pain.

🔹️ Once a retained deciduous tooth is identified, these should be extracted within 2 weeks to protect the development of the permanent tooth and to allow the permanent tooth to complete its eruption into a normal position.

🦷 February is Pet Dental Health Month! 🦷

Dental Disease #2: Broken Incisors

🔹️ This is common in both cats and dogs.

🔹️ Often, an incisor will appear to simply be missing with completely normal looking gingiva in place.

🔹️ This happens when a tooth is broken due to trauma. Because the incisors are very long, these teeth do not usually fall out in entirety like many pet owners might think.

🔹️ When x-rays are taken there is usually a broken root fragment present.

🔹️ Broken root fragments are painful and can lead to abscess formation.

🔹️ The treatment is surgical extraction of the root fragment under anesthesia.

🦷 February is Pet Dental Health Month! 🦷

This week we will be showing you some common dental diseases in dogs and cats.

Disease #1: Gingivitis

🔹 ️This is mild to moderate gingivitis. The gum line above the teeth is abnormally bright pink to red in color. This is caused by plaque and tartar which contain bacteria. The bacteria in contact with the gingiva causes irritation and inflammation. This is reversible at this early stage.

🔹 ️Without treatment gingivitis will likely progress to cause gum recession, bone loss, and destruction of the periodontal ligament which holds each tooth in place.

🔹 ️This patient needs a professional cleaning under anesthesia with dental radiographs taken of all the teeth.

🪥 After a professional cleaning, home care to include daily toothbrushing is imperative to keep the mouth healthy.

🦷 Things that dogs should NOT be given to chew:

🦷 Real bones, nylon bones, deer antlers, bully sticks, dried yak milk chews, and rawhides can all cause painful tooth fracture. 🤕

🦷 Ice cubes, sticks, and rocks can also cause tooth fracture. 🤕

🦷 Pig ears, hooves, bully sticks, and rawhides can all cause vomiting and diarrhea from bacterial contamination such as salmonella and E. coli. 🤮

🦷 Rope toys, and stuffed animals can be ingested and lead to intestinal obstruction requiring surgery. 🤮

🦷 Tennis balls can be broken and ingested leading to intestinal obstruction, the fuzzy surface can cause extreme wear to the enamel of the teeth over time, and they are a choking hazard to large dogs! 🤮😱

🦷 There are many chew toys available for dogs that are both fun and safe for the teeth! 🐶

🔹 ️Choose rubber chew toys that are flexible:

-The chew toy should not be soft enough that your dog can bite off pieces and swallow them.
-You should be able to bend the chew toy without breaking or splintering it.
-You should be able to indent the chew toy with your thumbnail.

🔹 ️️Always use the proper size chew toy for your dog's body weight. 😱**Chew toys that are too small can be choking hazards!**😱

🔹️ Always supervise your dog with any chew toy. If your dog is able to destroy the item it should be taken away immediately.
