It's hot outside. We all feel it. I'm starting to see those posts again. "Thinking about getting Bella a summer cool down shave". LISTEN! If your dog has the kind of coat that doesn't need shaved year round, and you're thinking it will make them cooler during the summer, you're probably wrong! Look up the breed grooming standards. Most dogs who get "summer cuts" are not supposed to be shaved ever! Many groomers refuse to do these services. You might be doing more damage than good!
So what do we do in the Florida summer heat?
Keep you & your dog well hydrated. Bring water with you & take breaks if you notice excessive panting. Go on walks in the earlier mornings & later evenings as much as possible. If you do go out during the heat of the day, make sure your dog has access to shade or grass & is never forced for any duration of time to be walking on straight concrete or asphalt. If it's too hot for the back of your hand to touch the ground, it's too hot for them! If you go to any market-type events with your dog, get some booties & train your dog to have a positive experience wearing them.
If you have a fenced backyard that your dog loves to be in, limit access to only a few minutes at a time. Especially for brachycephalic breeds!! You can incorporate a kiddy pool & some kind of shaded covering. You can even install an outdoor fan to provide them with a nice breeze! All of these things along with your dogs natural coat will help keep them cool. In case of emergency with heat stroke, remember to cool the dog SLOWLY! Ice cold water is counter productive & can cause shock. Always have the number for your closest emergency vet written down for easy access.
