It's time again for , when we highlight the work of one of our volunteers or fosters. Today we are spotlighting Jan Stanley, a longtime supporter of ours who has been volunteering with us since September 2023. Jan (pictured on the left with Volunteer Coordinator Olivia Schomer) won our Compassion Award at our most recent Volunteer Appreciation Party. She's known for her sensitivity toward all animals, her fellow volunteers, and customers.
"What's your favorite thing about volunteering?" My favorite things about volunteering - can't choose one - include being part of a talented, dedicated team of volunteers and staff who care deeply about the welfare of animals; interacting with/caring for the animals; meeting folks who want to give an animal a forever home; and that no two days are ever the same. I especially LOVE when a dog or cat that has been at TCHS for a while goes home, even more especially when a bonded pair goes home together.
I have only fostered once - Butchie Goodfellow - and aside from caring for him, the best thing is hearing that he is doing an outstanding job in his forever family.
"What would you tell people about volunteering at TCHS?" I would tell potential volunteers - and that includes everyone who is not yet a volunteer - that though we don't volunteer for the rewards, the rewards are great. See above answer. Even if most of what we end up doing on any given day is dishes or laundry, we know that we make a difference for the animals, and we know that we are appreciated. For me, the best thing about being retired is that I have time to volunteer at TCHS.
"What's your favorite animal?" My favorite animal is the one I am currently interacting with, not counting the puppies that have pooped up their kennel only five minutes after it was last cleaned, though even they are cute. I especially connect with the seniors, maybe because I am also old. Outside of the shelter, this fall I am enjoying the hummingbirds as they migrate through, and the pair of sand hill cranes who are gleaning in the field next to my driveway. And if bugs count, I enjoy that the crickets are giving nightly concerts. In spring it is the red wing blackbirds, the orioles and the frog concerts.
