🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

Please stop doing this and don't teach it to kids

I want to assure all my friends and followers that the horrific incident that occurred in my former rental facility is in no way connected with Pack Leader Behavior or Jojo's dogs. I was horrified to learn several weeks ago what was happening in the building and felt both helpless and hopeless to do anything about it.

I am deeply disturbed by these events, and I strongly condemn any form of mistreatment or harm inflicted upon animals. I firmly believe in the importance of upholding ethical and humane treatment of all living beings.

I thank the Anoka County Sheriff's Office and the Animal Humane Society for saving the poor canine victims of this atrocity.

This is something everyone should see. This xray is of a 2 week old puppy.

When you get your 8/10 week old puppies, please keep this image in mind. Their bones do not even touch yet. They plod around so cutely with big floppy paws and wobbly movement because their joints are entirely made up of muscle, tendons, ligaments with skin covering. Nothing is fitting tightly together or has a true socket yet.

When you run them excessively or don't restrict their exercise to stop them from overdoing it during this period you don't give them a chance to grow properly. Every big jump or excited bouncing run causes impacts between the bones. In reasonable amounts this is not problematic and is the normal wear and tear that every animal will engage in.

But when you're letting puppy jump up and down off the lounge or bed, take them for long walks/hikes, you are damaging that forming joint. When you let the puppy scramble on tile with no traction you are damaging the joint.

You only get the chance to grow them once. A well built body is something that comes from excellent breeding and a great upbringing-BOTH, not just one.

Once grown - around 12-18 months depending on their breed, you will have the rest of their life to spend playing and engaging in higher impact exercise. So keep it calm while they're still little baby puppies and give the gift that can only be given once.

All

I'm asking you to reach into your networks to help find a home for this cutie.

Meet Lily. Lily is an approx. 4.5 mo old Res dog that her now caretaker found along with her sister on the side of the road. They were malnourished and had all the maladies of being left to roam alone.

Fast forward a few weeks and they are both doing great as you can see. No health issues and just a cutie. Her caretaker, however, understands that trying to raise 2 female littermates is not something that should be undertaken and she wants to find an amazing home for this wonderful pup.
If you, or someone you know, is looking for a new family member, please have them contact me.

thanks
Joann

Your dog is NOT trying to dominate you. Dogs do whatever works to get what they want. Management and cooperation will get you both what you want.

There is a movie coming out on Feb 18 called "Dog". It stars Channing Tatum and a highly trained Belgian Malinois. It's a road trip/buddy movie.

People are going to see this film and many will want their own Belgian Malinois. This is not going to end well for this breed.

A highly trained Malinois is a work of art. So is Michelangelo's statue of David but I don't necessarily want it in my living room.

This breed can be amazing in the right hands but they require a lot of everything. If you are considering getting a Malinois, please, first go meet some Malinois of all ages at your local rescue.

Be honest with yourself about the amount of time that you have to dedicate to training one of these dogs. Not the person that you want to be but the person that you are right now. Sitting on your ass and reading this post.

If you are still determined to get one. You can stem the inevitable tidal wave of Malinois that will be surrendered to the shelters by sourcing your dog in one of 3 places:

Your local shelter
A local Malinois rescue
A real, ethical breeder (researching one is hard work but an ethical breeder will prove their dogs and require that you return the dog to them if you can't keep it)

DO NOT get a Malinois from the guy down the street. Don't help backyard breeders line their pockets. Pure bred doesn't equal good breeding.

If you see the popularity of these dogs sky rocket and think you can make a quick buck by breeding some. May all of your financial ventures fail one after another.

From the bottom of my heart, I love this breed. I know what's coming and so do the shelters and rescues

Study in the UK shows “participants almost unanimously cast doubt on the idea that breed was a cause of dog attacks”

"In truth, it bans any dog that is a ‘type’; whether dogs are classed as a banned ‘type’ depends on what they look like, rather than their actual breed.",

Anyone who follows me understands this instinctually. Dogs are not dangerous just by breed alone. A dog is formed by breeding and rearing, both in the critical 14 weeks after birth and for AT LEAST 2-4 years old. It is during these stages that a dog's "personality" gets written in stone.

It is also important to remember that what is not done to or with the dog is just as important to what is done to or with the dog. Many times lack of interaction or being ignored is just as bad as harsh interactions with the dog.

It is a shame that there is breed specific legislation and in my opinion; it is misguided. Did you know that in the early 1900's the dangerous breed was the Golden Retriever? In the 1940s (or so) the dog that was trusted to watch the children was the pitbull.

Hopefully, people, all people will become more informed and knowledgeable about dogs and treat each dog as an individual.
A report commissioned by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has cast doubt on the idea that specific dog breeds are dangerous
