TRAINING TIP THURSDAY

Always remember that, in the words of renowned behaviorist Dr. Susan Friedman, "Behavior is the study of one". This is to say that, each animal is an individual. Regardless of species, training is all about figuring out what motivates that animal to "behave" or perform behaviors. Behavior doesn't just happen. Behavior occurs because animals, human and non-human animals alike are all behaving for outcomes. Operant behaviors are behaviors that we have learned will bring a consequence. If you are a trainer who focuses on reinforcing desirable behaviors with positive reinforcement (like I am), then your focus is 1) deciding what behaviors you want to see and train, 2) figuring out the best reinforcement for this particular learner and 3) setting the learner up to perform the behavior so you can reinforce the behavior.

Not all animals will willing work with a new person. Not all animals will be interested in the same type of treat. Not all animals are easily prompted to perform a behavior. I don't use the same marker, reinforcement or body language when training different species, for instance. Take this crow I trained. I trained this animal to land and remain on a certain area of a perch, in between two zip ties, by only verbally marking and delivering food reinforcement, in a single training session. No luring and no physical prompting. Some things I had to consider:

👉Super smart animal requiring very quick decision making from me

👉Small, food reinforcers that require some mechanical skills to deliver

👉I had just met the animal, so had no working relationship with the individual

So, get to know your learner. Before jumping into training, figure out who your learner is, what they like and build a rapport. This will go a long way in your working relationship with this animal.
