We here at Decator's Place/Mid Missouri Malamute Rescue plan to start the year as we mean to go on, GROWING. We will need to fundraise on 2 fronts; to sustain what we have, which means to get more monthly supporters, and to grow to save more lives. Which means some serious fundraising for a metal building to move all our outside kennels, inside. That is our first priority because as much as our pups like to be outside playing in the mud and wet all the time, it's just not sanitary not to mention nearly impossible to keep them clean for possible meet and greets.

So stay tuned for a huge auction and please get your family to sign up for a monthly donation, seriously, even $5 or $10 adds up if everyone does it.

If anyone is interested in our " adopt" a Sanctuary Sweetheart we are always happy to see our Sanctuary pups get treats, toys, joint supplements ( some like Annie really need them). Just send a gift in their name and we will make sure they get it. Everyone loves treats so those are appreciated by all.

šŸ›‘ Letā€™s Talk Bite History šŸ›‘

Itā€™s getting closer to time for our PA girl with the bite history to be headed our way and I know we have had some questions about if we will adopt her out so I thought now was a good time to discuss this dreadful topicšŸ˜

Bite history ā€” two words that can be a death sentence for a dog šŸ˜Itā€™s not about whether the behavior is something I personally consider an actual aggressive ā€œbiteā€ or feel the dog is truly a risk or not. Once that label is attached itā€™s a massive liability risk.

Even if we carefully assess a dog and determine they pose no real danger, adopting them out still puts us on the line. If anything were to happenā€¦even in the most unlikely of circumstances, we are held legally and financially responsible. It doesnā€™t matter if the adopter claims to be experienced or familiar with handling ā€œdifficultā€ dogs; the blame always falls back on the rescue and the consequences can be greater than anyone realizes. I have seen this happen way too many times.

Let me share a storyā€¦ I remember this heartbreaking incident like it was yesterday. My very firstā€¦ felt like I completely failed this precious boy and crushed my heart and soul momentšŸ˜©šŸ„ŗ

A number of years ago, I was asked to take in a dog from NY, an owner surrender for supposedly biting the owners mother when she attempted to take a sock away from him. No medical treatment was required for the alleged bite. STRIKE ONEšŸ˜

I, of course agreed to take the dogā€¦ his name was KenzošŸ˜, a ONE YEAR OLD, just a BABYšŸ„ŗHusky, however for whatever reason they didnā€™t seen to want to send over the paperwork for him until right before transport and they kept pushing that out further .. this all ended up being tragic for Kenzo. The shelter who asked me to take him was going to get him transported to me but had wanted to let him decompress a bit before hand and they had an ā€œexperiencedā€ foster who agreed to hold him for awhile so that was their plan šŸ˜©ā€¦ unfortunately the ā€œexperiencedā€ foster was not as experienced as she needed to be and the first day Kenzo was there she thought things were going so well that by that afternoon she decided to take him on a walk. She say down in the floor next to him and started to put a harness on him.. all well and good until she decided instead of going around to the other side of him to latch the other side of the harness sheā€™d just lean over the top of him ā€¦ā€¦ this was a huge mistake and Kenzo attacked her. To get Kenzo off his wife the husband proceeded to beat and kick the crap out of Kenzo and then instead of calling the lady at the shelter to come get him, they called animal control. STRIKE TWOšŸ„ŗ

At this point Kenzo received no vet care so we have no idea what damage may have been done physically to him due to being beaten and kicked, on top of any emotional damage he had to be going through after being dumped by his original owner! So, animal control keeps him as per bite hold requirements and then agrees to let the shelter take him back ā€¦. keep in mind they do NOT have to do that.. once animal control gets the dog if they deem the dog to be a safety concern they do not have to give the dog back to the shelter, owner, rescueā€¦ anyone! However in this case.. I asked..I beggedā€¦the shelter to leave Kenzo at animal control until he was transported to me. I told them they needed to have someone go by animal control daily and sit outside his kennel and just talk to him, give him snacks and just try to get him to be able to relax some, but to leave him in there until he came to me. And yes I get that they decline in these types of environments but I just had a bad feeling.šŸ˜ But unfortunately they didnā€™t listen and she said she had another ā€œexperiencedā€ (are we seeing a pattern here šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø) foster who was going to take him. So off Kenzo went to foster number two. This individual brought this dog into his home knowing heā€™s now got two bites against him and a male had just beat/kicked the living crap out of him and yet he thought it was a good idea to shut this dog in a bedroom with himself, running loose while he sleptšŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø(first of all, stupid move! You donā€™t know this dog.. he is beyond stressed, he was just beaten and heā€™s already bitten) ā€¦ any guesses on how this played out? I wonā€™t make you wonderā€¦Kenzo went for the throat and attacked the man in his sleep..ambulances and police came and called animal control. STRIKE THREEšŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

Animal control refused to release Kenzo again and he was euthanized šŸ˜šŸ˜

Now I donā€™t know that I could have helped Kenzo but I do know I wouldnā€™t have made the choices that were made that cost him his life. And I can guarantee you had Kenzo made it to me I would have never had him euthanized for any reasonā€¦ as I would have never had him around anyone outside of the rescue to ever allow there to be a risk of him injurying anyone, just as we donā€™t with any of our other bite history dogs. I understand the shelter couldnā€™t adopt him out due to his bite historyā€¦ and they did what they felt was right and unfortunately it had a bad outcome.

In cases such as these you never know if accusations against a dog are valid or just an excuse to dump a dog, but they all have to be treated as though they are legitimate, the price can be extremely high and even dangerous if you donā€™t. Even though thereā€™s insurance for ā€œdangerousā€ dogs.. itā€™s not worth the risk. As in Kenzoā€™s caseā€¦ people feel they can handle a dogs issues and are familiar with such behaviors but all dogs are not the same. They very well may be experienced with ā€œaggressiveā€ dogs but that doesnā€™t mean all dogs fit their definition of aggressive. Iā€™m sure the shelter, as well as the fosters in this case truly thought they could handle him and heā€™d be just like every other dog theyā€™d worked with, or maybe they thought it was an excuse from the previous owner and there was no aggression at all, we will never truly know what they thought but we do know whatever it was it was wrong.

This is the reality we face way too often. Every decision we make in these situations has life-and-death consequences. As much as it hurts to keep a dog from being adopted, we have to weigh their safety, the safety of others, and the potential risks to the rescue.

Bite history doesnā€™t define a dogā€™s entire story, but it creates challenges we cannot ignore. Thatā€™s why rescues like ours work so hard to provide sanctuary for dogs with bite histories, giving them a chance to live safely and without fear of being put down due to a label.

Thank you, our supporters, for understanding the difficult choices we face. Every dog deserves love, but not every dog can be placed with an adoptive family. Sometimes we have to be that family here at the rescue.. and we are fine with that. If we get injured thatā€™s a risk we accept but we will never put anyone else or their family at risk, even if they would be willing to accept that risk. Your support makes it possible for us to give these more difficult, misunderstood pups a second chanceā¤ļø

A few weeks ago we asked all of you if we should step in and help this girl in PA that was due to be euthanized. Your answer was a resounding YES ā¤ which we have come to expect from our wonderful rescue family. At the time, the shelter was going to try to arrange transportation to us and as our luck would have it, it fell through.

A few days ago we were asked to help another Malamute, this one loose and roaming a neighborhood in Tennessee but very friendly. So again we said yes, as soon as she's caught šŸ™šŸ™

So now we need to arrange transportation for both and so far have been quoted over $1000 for both to get them here šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø and of course 50% down payment is due todayšŸ˜

So again we are asking our rescue family to help with the funds to get them both here to us. We know it's Christmas and we know it's a big ask but we are praying you can helpšŸ™
