🐾 Coyotes are being spotted more and more in urban areas, especially as our area develops and grows. Here are some quick facts about these native Florida canines, including tips on the best ways to avoid conflict.
➡️ Coyotes live in every state but Hawaii and arrived in Florida as a natural range expansion from Western states.
➡️ The scientific name of the coyote, Canis latrans, literally means "barking dog." They have a variety of vocalizations from barking to yips and howls. They are active during the day and night, but tend to be the most active at sunset and sunrise.
➡️ A coyotes diet is varied, consisting of both plants and animals including fruits, insects, rats and mice, rabbits, birds, deer and more. They also can be found eating people's trash and pet food.
➡️ The average Florida coyote weighs about 28lbs and is a close relative of the domestic dog.
➡️ This creature is very adaptable and is able to survive in urban, suburban and rural environments.
➡️ Coyotes help maintain balanced ecosystems by controlling the populations of rodents and smaller predators, such as foxes, opossums and raccoons, which naturally occur in higher densities and can quickly overpopulate areas of habitat.
➡️ They are generally pretty shy and stay away from people, but are being seen more and more as they look for new habitats.
➡️ Relocating or removing coyotes from the environment is not the proper way to attend to control or eliminate the population. This causes new coyotes to move into areas where the others have been removed (much like other animals would do such as raccoons.) Removal also causes the species to begin reproducing at a younger age with larger litters to keep up with populating.
