Let’s talk training methods… did you know that positive reinforcement is a form of operant conditioning that is backed by REAL SCIENCE 🤯 Positive reinforcement is also the same method that animals care takers in zoos and aquariums use all over the world to train all of their animals to be active participants in their own healthcare by training for necessary health checks and veterinary procedures, be able to learn more about our animals, promotes educational opportunities, plus provides mental stimulation and enrichment! It’s also the same method of training that is recommended by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) and vets around the world!

So what is POSITIVE reinforcement? Basically when an animal performs a behavior that produces a positive stimulus (something the animal finds of value), the animal is likely to repeat the behavior in the near future. The positive stimulus is termed a positive reinforcer because it reinforces, or strengthens, the behavior. When a positive reinforcer immediately follows a behavior, it increases the likelihood that the behavior will be repeated.

So does that mean if I use positive reinforcement I have to always carry treats? NO! In fact today I was using Sadie’s favorite new toy and a game of tug as her primary reinforcement to work on her agility skills today! Yes for some specific things she received some treats (because we were working on placement things and I need her head down in a particular spot to train positioning 🤣) Our other dog Bindi loves to work all day just for her ball and a game of fetch!

Do your own research and look into the REAL science behind your next trainer. Also ask yourself if you want lasting results or a quick fix that could be costly long term. And yes those are my pictures of myself and some friends from back in the day 😘

Here’s a great starter resource 💗 https://www.companionanimalpsychology.com/p/resources.html

Aggression. I hate this word. Well the “label” 😢 Once a dog is “labeled” aggressive it’s like a neon sign that follows that dog for life. Often times aggressive behavior is misunderstood and is simply a negative instinctual reaction to a stimulus out of fear, stress, or lack of training. No matter what the situation, an “aggressive” response can be scaring and unsettling for everyone involved. This can also lead to further problems and the behaviors becoming rehearsed or habitual which can be a nightmare to train out.

Today I was “discussing” aggression with a group of other trainers a particular case I’m working with to get more professional opinions on the behavior modification plan I have laid out (which basically confirmed we were headed in the right direction and various options). I have worked with many challenging cases and while I proceed with caution for all parties involved I strive to find the “why” and the solution to the behavior we are seeing.

However the discussion quickly took a wrong turn… When I explained the situation that had occurred, that in my opinion the dog’s negative response was clearly warranted, the trainer said “once a dog is labeled aggressive I’m out.” I was shocked that someone could give up on an animal so easily no matter what the situation was. How can you just give up?! That doesn’t help the dog or the family! To be fair… I felt the dog was doing the best it knew how given the situation it was put in. Just like humans… dogs have their limits and boundaries too. Some things are just not comfortable for them and can result in stress responses.

My definition of aggression is literally trying to eat every thing in sight or a threat to human or animals. When you have seen “aggression” you will know it. And within that there can be various types… dog aggressive, people aggressive, resource guarding, fear reactivity, boundary aggression, and the list goes on.

So instead of giving the dog the label of “aggressive” strive to understand the WHY behind the behavior and what’s causing the response you are seeing.

Do you do fun things with your dog? Monday mornings are slowing becoming our favorite day of the week because that’s our agility day! And what a great way to start a week off by doing some fun things (and a double workout 🤣😅)!!!

Take your dog on an adventure to the local park or hiking trail! Maybe on a ride along (if trained to do so safely 😉) to pick up the kids from school or to the pet store to pick out their own toy! Or in our neighborhood golf cart rides are a favorite! Some days we just need a mommy-doggie day out for some fun!

Tell me one thing or dog sport you think would be fun to do with your dog 😍

Time to look AHEAD and set goals for the future 🤩 We are setting doggie goals in our house! Goals to progress in our agility training, increase our overall obedience and confidence in our training, and solidify and improve some basic behaviors. Training never ends. I love the challenge that there is always more to improve upon and a new year gives us even more opportunity to set more goals to aim for! So what are YOUR goals for you and your dog this year? Where do you want to be with your dog a year from now? What would you like to see changed?

🍗🎁🎄Want to treat your dog for Christmas but not sure what’s safe? Our dogs never get food from the table but instead we make them their own little treat bowl for the holiday! Here are some things your dogs can and can’t eat this holiday!

🎁Keep your pets safe with the Holiday Chaos! 🎁

Last year when, Sadie was 6 months old, we had our first official “puppy” emergency vet visit… No matter how hard you puppy proof, they will find SOMETHING to get into. Left Sadie alone with kids to watch her in a confined, gated, “puppy proof” space… 15 minutes later we are headed to the vet. 🤦‍♀️

Apparently the kids had left their school made nativity scene people at Sadie eye-level on the TV stand and she decided Baby Jesus was going to be her next chew toy…. She of course decided to swallow the pipe-cleaner halo. I’m honestly shocked she didn’t swallow the whole thing 😳

🛑Metal sharp-ended foreign body = no good for dogs. 🚑 We rushed her to the vet! X-Ray confirmed it in her stomach. Thankfully I had just fed her and the food had helped prevent it from poking through anything. They were able to get it out with anything too invasive 🙌 along with a pretty good amount of Christmas tree needles too 🤦‍♀️

So what can we do to prevent accidents…

1) Be mindful of what is within reach of your pet! Presents under the tree may contain food items, food at the edge of the counter, or fun ribbons or bows might be enticing for pets. Make sure to put them out of reach until it’s time to open to prevent accidental ingestion or entanglements.

2) Gift Quality Time: Amid the holiday hustle, share a cozy snuggle or an extra play session with your pet—they crave your attention.

3) Establish a Safe Haven: Create a quiet retreat for your pet to escape overwhelming holiday chaos. It’s okay to remove them temporarily to reduce stress.

4) Avoid Toxic Plants: Opt for pet-safe alternatives or keep holiday plants like poinsettias out of your pet’s reach.

5) Monitor Flames: Keep a close eye on pets around candles or the fireplace to prevent accidents. Consider safer flameless candles.

6) Supervise Interactions: Ensure stress-free gatherings by supervising your pet’s interactions with new people or animals. Use a safe zone if needed

🐾 Socializing Puppies for a Bright Future! 🌟 Did you know that proper puppy socialization before 16 weeks can shape a dog’s behavior for life? 🐶 Scientific studies emphasize the critical window for positive experiences. 📚So where do you start!m? Where do you go with a shy pup?

Tips to nurture a well-rounded pup:
1️⃣ **Gradual Exposure:** Introduce new people, environments, and experiences gradually to prevent overwhelming your furry friend.

2️⃣ **Positive Reinforcement:** Reward good behavior during social interactions to build positive associations and boost confidence.

3️⃣ **Playdates Galore:** Arrange playdates with vaccinated, friendly dogs in a controlled setting to encourage healthy social interactions.

4️⃣ **Handling Practice:** Gently touch your puppy’s paws, ears, and mouth to foster tolerance and ease future vet visits.

5️⃣ **Noise Exposure:** Gradually expose your pup to various sounds—vacuum, doorbell, kids playing—to build resilience and prevent anxiety.

6️⃣ **Car Rides:** Take short, enjoyable car rides to make future travels stress-free and fun for your furry co-pilot.

7️⃣ **Meet the World:** Introduce your pup to different surfaces like grass, concrete, and sand, promoting adaptability and confidence.

8️⃣ **Varied People:** Expose your puppy to a diverse range of people—different ages, ethnicities, and clothing styles—to foster sociability.

Remember, every positive encounter contributes to a well-socialized and well-adjusted pup! Need some ideas? Check out this amazing list for your puppy from the ! 🌈🐶

🐾 Can your puppy do this? Teddy can! And he’s only 5 months old! Look at him rocking his training! Teaching patience and impulse control to your furry friend is a rewarding journey! 🌟 Incorporate training gems like Karen Overall’s Relaxation Protocol and the “It’s Your Choice” game can really help to create a calm and well balanced pup🎓🐶

🔍 **Karen Overall’s Relaxation Protocol**: Build focus and calmness through gradual exposure to stimuli. Start with short sessions, rewarding calm behavior. 🧘‍♂️🔊

🎮 **It’s Your Choice Game**: Develop impulse control by rewarding self-control. Hold a treat, wait for your dog to back off, then when they make the decision to relax and ignore… reward. Repeat and add difficulty for mastery! 🏆🐕

📅 Consistency is key! Practice these exercises regularly, celebrating small victories. 🐾❤️

I often get asked… is he/she too old to learn? NEVER! While some things might be challenging as dogs have become accustomed to habits. They still have just as much ability to learn and improve upon their behavior!

Bindi is turning 14 this year… she’s still always training! Obviously training looks a little differently than her agility days… between cancer surgery recover and arthritis she’s not as mobile as she used to be so we modify things we do now but we are always refreshing her skills!

This week we had a doggies day out and went to the vet and a few stores after. I am still comfortable being able to hold a newly opened Dr Pepper can and her leash in the same hand while trusting that she won’t pull me out to the car or that she can consistently follow along with me closely in a busy store with other dogs around. And when I know she needs a break, chilling on her bed practicing patience and self control despite what’s going on in the house of chaos! 🤣

Training works the exact same way with older dogs as it does with puppies! Tell me do you have older dogs and if so do they still listen?

In today’s episode… one of the many things I’ve pulled out of Sadie’s mouth… a heavily chewed Almond Joy (luckily still with the wrapper on!) 🤦‍♀️

So let’s talk about preventing this from happening… believe me… our house is puppy proofed top to bottom however one thing I can’t fully proof… kids 🤦‍♀️👨‍👩‍👧‍👦👶🏻🧸

Parenting kids and parenting puppies 🤦‍♀️🙄😵‍💫🥴Yet again another case of I no matter how hard I try to protect our puppies… even as a trainer… kids will be kids and accidents will happen. Tonight we had the golf cart parade in our neighborhood. Kids got candy. Candy bag apparently ended up at nose level in a chair… and well apparently Sadie decided to try an Almond Joy while I went in the other room for a few minutes 🤦‍♀️

🤔💭So what do we do about it?

✅1) We continue to work on making good choices 🤣🤦‍♀️ And yes that CAN be taught to dogs and puppies! “It’s Your Choice” is one of our favorites to practice at home to work on impulse control.

✅2) Continue to practice “Drop it” and “Leave it”

✅3) Cage (cough) I mean EDUCATE children 🤣 on the dangers of leaving things out where the puppy can reach them

✅4) Continue to monitor puppy when out or use a crate when you can’t watch them!
5) Exercise! A tired puppy is a good puppy 😉 and less likely to get into mischief (aka getting bored!)

🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Tell me one thing your dog has gotten into or tried to eat!

12/01/2023

I cook more for my dogs than I do for my family lately 🤣😳 One of the questions I often get asked is what food do you recommend? The big debate… like for REAL. And what do I say… well unfortunately every dog lover, every vet, every nutritionist is going to have their own opinion on what they believe is best for your dog. Such a helpful answer right? 😉

So here’s my take… I like the science. 🔬👩‍🔬I like PROOF that there are benefits and that something is “valuable”. 👩‍💻📖

There is science behind kibble.
There is also science behind non-kibble options. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I feel like offering the best of both worlds is best for my dogs and also a balance for us.

This why we started doing “toppers”. 🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️🍗🥦🥩🥕🥬🍠You’ve probably seen this concept flooding the food stores lately next to your favorite brand of dog food! So what’s all the fuss? A new study from the University of Helsinki, Finland, published Thursday in the journal Scientific Reports suggests that a diet for puppies and young dogs including non-processed meat, dinner table leftovers and raw bones could protect your pet from stomach disorders later in life.🤯

Similarly a study out of the UK found that dogs that integrated as little as 20% of fresh food can make a big difference - as little as small pieces of fruit and vegetables each day rather than processed treats - and that they lived an average of THREE years longer with a fresh diet 😳😳😳🤯

So you do you! What do you currently feed your dog?

🌈 Beyond words…. Beyond training. That's the magic a professional trainer can unravel—a journey to a deeper, more soulful connection. It's not just about 'sit' and 'stay'; it's about preserving your sanity in a world that can be chaotic. It’s about creating positive communication and an equally better level of understanding 🐾✨

Each session isn't just a step toward obedience; it's a moment of calm in the storm, a breath of relief, encouragement, a cheerleader, and a reminder that you're not alone on this journey. Training isn't just about your dog—it's about you finding peace amid the playful chaos.

In those moments when frustration looms, and patience wears thin, trainers stand as guides, steering you through with empathy and understanding. Your sanity matters, and so does the bond you share. 🌬️💖

Got a wild pup? Maybe some days a little annoying? Wish your dog could “chill” while you are eating dinner or watching tv?

Transform your dog's behavior with the powerful 'Place' command! 🐾 We have been working hard lately on “place” to teach Sadie to stay out of the kitchen while we are cooking, away from the table when we are eating, give her a spot to chill when we are working at the agility field, and sometimes we just need her to take a break 🤣

Teaching your furry friend to stay on a designated spot not only prevents unwanted behaviors but also enhances focus and obedience. 🏡✨ Start by picking a preferred spot or target zone (bed, towel, rug, etc), reward and praise for being on the area, increase duration and distraction over time. Then Practice in various locations and reward calmness for a well-behaved pup!

🎄✨ Tis the season for festive fun with our furry friends! Keep the peace between your pets and the Christmas tree with these paw-some tips:

1. **Paws Off Presents:** Elevate gifts or keep them stowed away to prevent curious noses from unwrapping early surprises!

2. **Doggie-Proof Decor:** Opt for pet-friendly ornaments or keep delicate decorations out of reach (or out of tail level in our house 🤣)

3. **Supervised Sniffing:** Introduce your pup to the tree slowly, under supervision. Reward calm behavior for positive associations.

4. **Chew Proof** The puppy liked to chew at the pine needles last year 🤦‍♀️ Spray the lower levels with a chew deterrent like Bitter Apple to discourage this.

5. **Tinsel-Free Zone:** Skip the tinsel; it can be tempting for playful pups but poses a risk if ingested.

6. **Sturdy Tree Stand:** Ensure your tree is securely anchored in a sturdy stand to prevent accidental toppling during playful moments.

7. **Block It Off** If necessary use a small baby fence to keep pups at a distance. This is especially helpful to keep puppies out and out of trouble.

Remember, each pup is unique, so tailor these tips to your dog's personality. Happy holidays!

How are you keeping your pet safe from your decorations this holidays? 🐶🎄

🚶‍♂️🐾 Are you able to walk your dog on ONE finger? ☝🏻🦮 What if this were possible and could turn into your everyday? 😱🤯 It IS possible with a little bit of work and consistency!

Transform your walks with these 10 tips! 🌟

1. **Consistent Reinforcement:** Reward your dog consistently for walking beside you without pulling, using treats or praise.

2. **Short Sessions:** Keep training sessions short to maintain your dog's focus and enthusiasm.

3. **Proper Equipment:** Use a comfortable harness or collar that won't choke or hurt your dog when correcting pulling behavior.

4. **Change Directions:** If your dog pulls, abruptly change directions. This teaches them to pay attention to your movements.

5. **Stop and Wait:** Stop walking when your dog starts pulling. Resume only when the leash slackens, reinforcing that pulling leads to a halt in the walk.

6. **Engage with Treats:** Hold treats at your side to encourage your dog to walk close by. Reward them when they maintain the desired position.

7. **Practice Inside:** Begin training in a controlled indoor environment before progressing to outdoor distractions.

8. **Use a Clicker:** Introduce a clicker to mark good behavior, associating the sound with positive reinforcement.

9. **Stay Calm:** Avoid getting frustrated. Dogs pick up on your emotions, and a calm demeanor makes learning more effective.

10. **Consistency is Key:** Be consistent with your commands, rewards, and corrections to create a clear understanding for your dog. 🦴👟

The beginning. Starting can be overwhelming. Whatever you are working to train… it’s a process. Don’t expect a quick fix. Training is a series of steps to get to goal. These two jumps… which aren’t even “jumped” yet… are the beginning of a series of pieces that connect together to make an entire course which is years 😳😳😳 down the road to be trained… a physical example of EVERY training journey no matter what it is.

Training doesn’t happen over night.
Read that again 😉👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻

It takes work. 💪🏻
It takes TIME. ⏰
It takes practice.😓

And then do it all again… 🔁😳

Training never ends.
There’s always more to work on, more to improve upon, and more goals to hit.

So when you have those days… you know those days you are super frustrated 😫and want to pass on that 5 minutes training session with your dog for the day 😴 Remember that consistency and hard work pays off. Those 5 minutes you were beyond tired and wanted to give up could be your break through when all your hard work pays off and everything comes together 💗

What will you be starting to work on with your dog next?

Wow 🥰🤯😱 Today was one of those absolutely amazing days. 🥰😊I was like a little kid in their absolute favorite place on earth. So. Incredibly. Happy. Surround by like minded people. Total bliss, inspiration, and standing in awe that I was even there watching these incredible dogs and their handlers.

I was totally geeking out at the level of skill, amount of work that has been invested, the handling abilities of the handlers, the skill and accuracy of the dogs, the names and faces I’ve watched all of my training career 🤩😱🤯😳, the time that has been put in, and the true passion for the challenge to achieve from both parties. A lot has changed since I’ve been here. Like A LOT. And while I’m slightly intimidated starting over again… I am SO. FREAKING. EXCITED!

What’s your dog’s “Love Language? 🐾✨ Tell me below! 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

One thing I often get asked is “do I always have to use treats for training?” Absolutely not… in fact I encourage you NOT to use treats all the time BUT you do need use something that is reinforcing and that your dog LOVES! The trick is figuring out what your dog’s love language IS, and harnessing it can be the key to becoming the ultimate pup whisperer! 🐶💬

First things first, identify your dog's love language. Is it treats, belly rubs, playtime, interaction, or maybe even a combination of all of these? Once you've cracked the code, it's time to turn training into a tail-wagging celebration.

Can you tell what Sadie loves? 🤣🤦‍♀️ She LOVES affection… belly rubs, pets, rub downs, a scratch behind the ear… ALL of it! Anything tactile! But she also loves treat, to PLAY with a ball or tug, and also love anything that is high energy or anything that involves giving her attention 🤣 I actually use a combination of all of these when working with her… plus variety keeps training fun and exciting!

However Bindi… will she take a treat… yes… but she’s kinda… eh 🤷🏼‍♀️ Giving her physical affection… on her terms… when she initiates it but she doesn’t work for it. She loves to WORK and loved having a “job”… that is a huge driving factor in working with her! On the other hand pull out a ball… WOW! She will work ALL day just for a ball and a game of fetch!

Ultimately it’s finding YOUR dog’s love language and what they find reinforcing and then using those things to help reward your dog when wanting to train.

Remember, consistency is key. Speak their love language fluently, and soon you'll have a pup who's not just well-behaved but also thoroughly convinced that you're the best thing since the squeaky toy. So, gear up, grab those treats, toys, and get ready for the training party begin! 🎉🐕
