In honor of National Pet ID Week, we wanted to remind you how important it is to have proper identification on your pets. There are many types of identification; name tags, microchips, and tracking collars are some of the most common. We've listed the most important items to put on your pets tags!

1. Pet’s Name
2. Contact Name
3. Contact Phone Number
4. Address

We do not recommend ear tags!!

Happy Monday Everyone!

With warmer weather approaching, we have started receiving phone calls and pictures in regards to spots on their pets stomachs. Although early, it is officially black fly bite season. Black flies can most often be found in moist and humid climates and we see these bites most commonly on pets that enjoy laying in the grass.

Our clinic team was fortunate to spend time with our families this last week. I now want to take a moment to share my appreciation. I am grateful for the wagging tails and purrs that often greet us in the exam rooms. I appreciate sharing time and stories with our clients. But most of all, I am grateful I have customer service representatives, assistants, and an associate doctor with skills that give me the opportunity to care for, provide comfort, and save the lives of our patients.
Thank you!
Dr. Ed

With the holiday season about to hit us full force, we decided to share what we know about this "mystery illness" currently circulating in the media. Respiratory outbreaks happen all the time. Compared to when travel was decreased during COVID isolation, there will be more boarded pets increasing outbreak potential. Although we will stay vigilant monitoring the situation, St. Joseph Animal Wellness Clinic's concern is currently low. To keep your social pet safe:
1) Make sure vaccines are up to date.
2) Flu vaccine should be considered for any social pup.
3) Avoid boarding young puppies and seniors with questionable health.
4) Keep all dogs on monthly anti-parasitic medications or heartworm preventatives.
5) Watch for updates from your friendly neighborhood veterinarian.🙂

Cases have been reported in Oregon, Colorado, Indiana, Illinois, Washington, Idaho, California, the Northeast and more.

Happy National Vet Tech week to all of the Vet Techs as well as all veterinary staff members out there! We took the opportunity to not only show our gratitude for our vet techs but instead the entire staff! Throughout the week staff members worked together to bring a special treat, pick lunch, or even have a pumpkin decorating contest. Our staff did an amazing job on their pumpkins and we'd like to know which are your favorite!

Is the Pavement Too Hot to Walk Your Dog?
Many factors influence when and how a burn occurs but at temperatures above 130 degrees Fahrenheit, skin will show signs of thermal injury within just 60 seconds. This means that if the air temperature is above 80 degrees Fahrenheit, the pavement could potentially be hot enough to burn a dog's feet if it stands on it for long enough.

Does your dog have anxiety?
Here is a great article to help you understand their anxious behavior and how to help your dog cope with unsettling situations.

Anxiety in dogs is seldom a simple diagnosis If your dog is nervous, and maybe even somewhat fearful at times, it’s wise to look deeply into what may be causing these behavioral issues and then devise a plan to help your dog become more confident. Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease in furbabies in the United States. It is caused by foot-long worms (heartworms) that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels of affected pets, causing severe lung disease, heart failure and damage to other organs in the body. Heartworm disease affects dogs, cats and ferrets.

Why are heartworms a threat to your dog? This short video explains.
