We are aware of the circulating news stories in regard to contagious upper respiratory illness that appears to need more advanced care and immediate medical attention. We, like most others, have limited information on this illness. We are not aware of any cases spreading in our local area at this time and we will update our clients once we have more knowledge to share.
To reduce risk, we are recommending:
• Limiting your pet's social interaction - when possible, it is advised to keep pets home with you as apposed to having them boarded or attending daycare. We recommend finding a pet sitter/house sitter while traveling to avoid contact with pets from other regions or households.
• Vaccinating accordingly - It is unknown whether this is a new illness, or new strain of an existing illness. It is recommended to make sure your pet's vaccinations are up to date including DHLPP, DHPP and Bordetella. We are also offering Canine Influenza vaccine, especially for dogs that have increased exposure. While this illness has not been shown to be Bordetella or Influenza, it has been reported that dogs vaccinated for these diseases tend to have milder signs and quicker recoveries.
• Contact us sooner rather than later - It is important to call or schedule an appointment as soon as you notice any kind of clinical symptoms at home. Early detection can be very helpful for upper respiratory illnesses, especially since we have limited knowledge at this time.
• If your dog is sick - We appreciate you keeping your dog in your vehicle and not interacting with other patients, to limit spread.
It is our goal to offer the very best and most compassionate care for all of our patients! We will continue to learn more as time goes on and we will adjust our protocols and recommendations as needed. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call our office to discuss your pet's care.
