The benefits of garlic!
GARLIC. YES. NO. 🐶🐱🧄
Honestly, when it comes to anything regarding your pets, it's up to you. Don't feel pressured to go with what one person says. Take that information as a starting point and do your own research and do what feels right for you and your pet. 🐶🐱
When Dexter's holistic, physical therapy vet suggested adding garlic (2012) I was a bit freaked out. I did not add it at that time. I just wasn't sure. And she was a new vet to us. As I continued to learn and do research, I decided it was something I could add to Dexter's life. That said, I'm still a firm believer in rotation and moderation. There really aren't too many things I give Dexter day in and day out. 🐶
🧄Now, garlic took its “toxic to pets” stance ages ago when a study was done that involved giving dogs massive amounts of garlic.
When garlic is chopped, it releases a sulfur known as allicin which provides us with some amazing health benefits. The allicin is also responsible for that garlic smell. The best benefits are to chop and smash the garlic and allow the allicin to activate for about 10 minutes. Then feed. I chop Dexter's then take him for his morning potty break.
🧄A few precautions. Anytime your dog is on medication, it is important to speak with their holistic veterinarian before adding any supplements and herbals. Pregnant dogs and puppies under 6 months and possibly Akitas and Shiba should avoid garlic.
🧄Approximate Dose of Fresh, Organic Garlic: 5 pounds 1/8 tsp, 6-10 pounds ¼ tsp, 11-15 pounds ½ tsp, 16-20 pounds ¾ tsp, 21-30 pounds 1 tsp, 31-50 pounds 1 ½ tsp and 51 + pounds 2 tsp
