MONDAY, MAY 20 UPDATE Thanks to all the plant people who made it out this weekend, and our apologies that you did not get to see this guy opening up!...
Thanks to all the plant people who made it out this weekend, and our apologies that you did not get to see this guy opening up! Still watching and waiting. We measured the bloom at 52” this morning so there was a bit more growth overnight. We think the bloom could be today…or the next day?! Did we also say that a couple days ago? Yes. 😊
TUESDAY, MAY 14 UPDATE: Today Horace measured in at 46.5” so the spadix is continuing its steady upwards growth. It won’t break any height records, but it is still pretty...
Horace bloom watch is still on....today was the first day with no new growth...so.....if the bloom starts you will be able to see it on the live cam by late afternoon.
Stay tuned!

And last, but certainly not least, here's Neil! Neil has called Como home since 2001 and has taken the title of oldest bear under human care at the age of 27! He is definitely a favorite of staff and visitors alike! While polar bears have the ability to live up to 30 years in the wild, climate change and the rapid loss of sea ice is making this much more difficult! Join us in celebrating #polarbearweek and head over to Polar Bears International page to see how you can help!
Next up, beautiful Nan! Our female polar bear joined our trio in 2021 and has been a wonderful addition. While watermelons are a sweet treat for a polar bear, their main diet in the wild consists of ringed and bearded seals. Polar bears catch these seals by waiting at their breathing holes on the sea ice. Unfortunately, the sea ice is rapidly melting and this is a primary threat to polar bears and their long-term survival. #polarbearweek is a fantastic time to learn what WE can do to help keep these beautiful animals around for generations to come! Head on over to Polar Bears International and see how easy it is to help.
Willow, Como’s baby Snow Leopard, made her public debut today, with mom, Alya, closely shadowing her. Although she’s blind, she’s very mobile and seems to love exploring! Read more about bringing up Willow here: https://comofriends.org/impact-and-news/2023/07/bringing-up-baby/ 📷: Educator Brigid
