Hi guys!

Dog Nuance Dog Training is partnering with Rhodes Custom Finishes Painting Company for a local animal shelter donation drive—and we need your help! 🐾

From November 7 - 25, we’re collecting essential items for both cats and dogs. Every donation, big or small, makes a difference for animals in need! Here’s what we’re looking for:

Dry Food (open & labeled is okay!)

Toys & Treats

Leashes, Collars, Harnesses

Cages and Clean Beds

Towels & Blankets (gently used is great!)

To make donating easier, we’re offering free local pickup for cages in the Lake St. Louis and St. Peters areas. For all other items, please reach out to us for drop-off location information.

Let’s come together to show some love and support for our shelter pets. Thank you, St. Charles!

Monday Wellness Tip: Go for a Sniff Walk

Take your dog on a sniff walk in an unfamiliar area this week! 🐾 Encourage your pup to sniff as much as they want—this walk isn’t about covering distance, but about letting your dog engage their senses and explore. Sniffing is mentally stimulating and allows your dog to experience the world in their own unique way, helping to reduce stress and tire them out. 🐕👃

Where’s your dog’s favorite place to explore?

Sunday Secrets: Say It Once!

This week’s secret: Ask verbal cues only once. 🐾

Repeating commands teaches your dog to wait until you’ve said it multiple times before responding. So, when you say things like, “Sit... Sit... SIIIIIT!” it only encourages them to ignore the first few cues.

Practice giving the command once—if your dog doesn’t respond, pause and then reinforce the behavior with guidance or a hand signal. With consistency, your dog will learn to respond to the command the first time, every time! 🐕✨

How often do you catch yourself repeating commands? Let’s work on practicing saying it just once this week! 💬

Sunday Secrets: Hand Signals in Training

This week’s secret: Hand signals are just as fun as they are effective! 🐾

Did you know that dogs typically learn hand signals faster than verbal cues? 🖐️ Dogs naturally pay more attention to body language, so using hand signals can really boost your training success. Consistency is key—pick signals that make sense to you and your dog, and stick with them. 🎯

You can even create sequenced behaviors using only hand signals! I once heard of a trainer who used an inconspicuous hand signal—a simple pat on the hip—to get her Sheppy to act like he needed to go potty, just so she could leave uncomfortable social-situations 🧠💡!

Have you tried teaching your dog any hand signals? What works best for you? Let’s talk hand signal ideas in the comments!

Monday Wellness Tip: The Power of Massage

This is a great opportunity to try out the 'guided pets' technique! 🐾 Not only does massaging your dog help them relax and reduce anxiety, but using their eye movements to guide where you pet them makes the experience even more tailored and comforting. Gentle strokes and massaging pets along their back, shoulders, or ears can do wonders for their physical and emotional well-being. 🧡🐶

Meet Simba, this good boy just finished our training consultation 🐾
Initially a little nervous, Simba quickly opened up and showed just how eager he is to learn. His parents were feeling disconnected after some prior facility training—while he listened well there, they struggled to get the same results at home.

That’s where I come in! Simba is the perfect candidate for a holistic approach that combines obedience, behavioral, and enrichment training. I'm excited to help him (and his family) build confidence and consistency, especially in their home environment!

Way to go, Simba! 🦴💪

Meet Murphy and Harley! 🐶🐶
These King Charles Cavaliers are in their adolescent phase and full of energy! Despite their sass, they responded incredibly well to patience as we worked on basic obedience. I’m excited to watch them improve and master their training mechanics as we continue to build on these skills.

Looking forward to seeing them thrive! 🐾💪

Sunday Secrets: Trainer Insight

This week’s secret: Keep sessions short but frequent.
Dogs (especially puppies) have short attention spans, so training sessions should last no more than 5-10 minutes. You can always have multiple sessions throughout the day, but keep them short, fun, and engaging to avoid frustration for both you and your dog.
Pro tip: End every session on a positive note—always leave your dog wanting more!

How long do your training sessions typically last?

Meet Klutch and Daisy! 🐕‍🦺🐕‍🦺
These Cane Corsos had a fantastic first session! Mom had already laid a solid foundation of core skills. She wanted to fine-tune her training mechanics and work on calmly walking these powerful pups on leash. We focused on helping her master the techniques right where it matters most—at home!

I'm excited to watch their progress as we build on obedience and enrichment training! 💪🐾

Dog Nuance is back with more myth-busting!

Today, we're tackling two common misconceptions about dog behavior:

1. "Dogs only eat grass when they’re sick."
Not necessarily! While eating grass can sometimes signal gastrointestinal discomfort, dogs may also eat grass out of boredom, enjoyment, or even to add fiber to their diet. It’s not always a sign that something’s wrong.

2. "Dogs only eat when they’re hungry."
Not true! Like humans, dogs may eat for reasons beyond hunger—out of habit, boredom, anxiety, or simply because they enjoy food. It’s important to manage portion sizes to prevent overeating and keep them healthy. (lookin' at YOU Labs!)

Have questions about dog training or curious about any specific dog myths? Just ask! I'm here to help! 🐾📣
