🐾🌊Pet Pool Safety 101: What Every Pet Owner Should Know

☀️As the summer heat rises in our area, it's natural for our furry friends to join in on the poolside fun. However, it's important to ensure their safety around the pool water. Check the tips below & share a photo of your water loving tail wagger in the comments⬇️

🧪Chlorine & other chemicals that pools are treated with can be harmful, ingestion can lead to stomach upset, vomiting, and even severe health issues.

🐕Skin & coat health can be affected with prolonged exposure which can cause skin irritation as it dries out your pet's coat. Remember to rinse your pet off with fresh water after swimming to reduce residual chemicals.🚿

💧Ear infections increase in risk due to moisture that gets trapped in your pet's ears. Use a veterinary recommended cleaning solution with a drying aid after each swim.

🛟Always supervise your pet around the pool as not all pets are natural swimmers and even experienced swimmers can tire then struggle to exit the pool. Make sure your pool has easy entry and exit points for your pet to prevent slip or fall accidents.

🌊While saltwater pools are generally safer for pets than chlorinated, ingesting large amounts of saltwater can still be harmful leading to salt poisoning which requires immediate veterinary attention.

🦺Consider using a pet life jacket for those who are not strong swimmers or for long swim sessions.

🔹Quick Tips from your team at Arch Animal Hospital West:
✅Rinse your pet after swimming
✅Provide fresh drinking water to discourage pool water consumption
✅Monitor your pet for signs of distress or illness during and after swimming, seek veterinary care immediately with any concerns

Have fun, stay cool, and follow us for more tips on keeping your pet safe this summer!🐾

☀️Warm Weather Reminder: Always check the pavement. If the ground is too hot for you to be barefoot, it's too hot for paws, too!🐾

Try shorter walks during the coolest times of day. The best times are in the morning before 8:00am and later in the evening after 7:00pm. If needed and your pet allows, consider using protective dog booties to prevent painful damage to paw pads.

🤔 Ever wonder why your dog is panting? 🐶💨

💡 Panting is a normal and essential behavior for dogs, here's why:

🌡Temperature Regulation: Dogs don't sweat like humans do. Panting helps them cool down by evaporating moisture from their tongue and respiratory tract.

🥏 During/After Exercise: Dogs pant to catch their breath as well as maintain a normal body temperature after physical activity.

😥 Stress or Anxiety: Panting can be a sign that your dog is feeling stressed or anxious. Look for other signs like pacing, whining, or hiding.

🩺 Health Conditions: Excessive panting can be a symptom of underlying health problems like pain, heart disease, and respiratory disorders. Panting is one of the first signs of heat exhaustion/stroke when pets are exposed to elevated temperatures for too long.

Remember- while panting is usually normal, always pay attention to your dog's overall behavior and consult a veterinarian to address any concerns.

🐶Josie is the sweetest 11 week old Brittany Spaniel weighing in just over 10lbs!

During her check up visit with Dr. Sam, Josie received very important booster vaccines. Then she sat just like this in Alexis' lap for her entire puppy pawdicure.🐾
Afterwards, she was of course rewarded with cheese 🧀 that she loved!

We do our very best to set our littlest patients up for successful, stress-free veterinary and grooming visits by giving them a positive experience from the start.

We're so excited to watch you grow and we'll see you soon sweet Josie!💙

Who knew for World Turtle Day our hospital would have such a special reptilian visitor?!🐢

This morning a beautiful red-eared slider chose our backyard native garden to make her nest and then she was back off to her nearby chosen body of water!

Fun Facts:
🥚Red-eared sliders do not stay with their nest. After laying 1-30 eggs 🤯 neither the male or female parent will return or care for their nest, the eggs, or little hatchlings.

⏱️Eggs will incubate in their nest for roughly 60-90 days, even up to 4 months depending on the environment.

🐢Red-eared sliders can live 20 years in the wild and up to 40 years in captivity.

🪱Their diet has a wide range including plants, insects, and even small animals such as fish.

📏 Females are known to be larger than males, with adults averaging 5-12 inches. Hatchlings are just a little over 1 inch when they make their debut.

🛑It’s warm and turtles are coming out of brumation. Remember to stop and if you move them out of the road, place them on the side they were traveling towards.

Happy World Turtle Day!🌎

⚠️Recurrent episodes of vomiting and diarrhea can quickly result in dehydration requiring hospitalization with fluid re-hydration along with medication to help their GI tract.

🐾There's a lot to know in order to keep your pet safe and we're here to help! Learn more about a bacterial infection your dog may be at risk for and how to keep them protected:

🦠Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can pose serious health risks to dogs and even people. When contracted, leptospirosis attacks major organ systems like the liver and kidneys.

⚠️Transmission to dogs is typically through contaminated water, soil, or urine from an infected animal. It is spread through the urine of wildlife such as rodents, raccoons, deer, skunks, foxes, squirrels, and opossums. Most commonly found in warm climates and areas of high rainfall but it can be spread anywhere. Hunting and working dogs may be at an increased risk due to frequent exposure to environments with ample wildlife.

🚨Symptoms can vary from mild to severe. Watch for lethargy, fever, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, increased thirst and urination, weight loss, stiffness and muscle pain. Early detection is crucial for a better prognosis, if left untreated leptospirosis can progress rapidly and require intensive hospitalization.

🔑The key to prevention is vaccination at your veterinarians recommendation. You can help protect your pup with annual vaccinations, especially if they spend time outdoors or in areas where wildlife may roam- including your own backyard. Minimize exposure to potentially contaminated areas, keep an eye on where your dog plays and explores, and discourage your dog from drinking out of puddles, ponds, creeks, and other bodies of water. 🏞

Don't wait, vaccinate! Call to schedule or request an appointment from our app.
