Potty training is about more than just avoiding accidents—it’s about setting your pup up for success with a clear, consistent routine. 🐾

2️⃣ 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝘁𝘆 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘀: Puppies, especially, need frequent breaks—usually every hour for their age in months (e.g., a 3-month-old puppy every 3 hours). Plan potty trips first thing in the morning, after meals, naps, playtime, and right before bed.
3️⃣ 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘆 & 𝗡𝗮𝗽𝘀: Keep play and nap times structured. After naps or play, it’s the perfect time for a potty break!
4️⃣ 𝗥𝗲𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗦𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: Celebrate every successful potty break with praise or a treat to reinforce good behavior.

Training is a process, and routines not only help with potty training but also make your dog feel secure and calm. Stay consistent, be patient, and you’ll be amazed at their progress!

Meet Bandit, a 4-year-old Australian Cattle Dog who started his training with us to tackle challenges like leash pulling, jumping on people, house soiling, and dog reactivity. His owner described him as stubborn and increasingly difficult to manage, but we knew Bandit had the potential to shine!

𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝟭: Bandit quickly learned "sit" and "place" with implied stays and began working on "down." Though hesitant at first, he soon started engaging with hand-fed meals and showing enthusiasm for training. Walking sessions improved as he practiced check-ins and focus.

𝗪𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝟮: Bandit progressed to public training at Home Depot, excelling in distractions. He mastered "heel," refined his stationary commands, and began structured play that incorporated obedience. At Bayview Dog Park, he worked on staying neutral around active dogs and practiced recall with impressive results.

Bandit’s training journey shows how consistent, personalized guidance can transform behavior. With continued progress in off-leash reliability, e-collar conditioning, and more public outings, Bandit is on track to becoming the Rockstar he’s meant to be!

𝗟𝗲𝘁’𝘀 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗗𝗼𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲.

As trainers, we see it all too often: high-drive, high-energy breeds like Malinois or Australian Shepherds placed in homes that don’t understand their needs. These dogs are bred for purpose—whether it’s controlling chaos or working tirelessly in the field. Yet they’re brought into environments that can’t meet their energy or drive.

When their needs go unmet, the result is heartbreaking: OCD behaviors, reactivity, aggression, separation anxiety, or even self-harm. Often, these dogs are rehomed or abandoned at shelters because their owners didn’t realize what they were signing up for.

Offered Behaviors: What are they? An offered behavior is when your dog naturally performs a behavior without a lure or cue. You capture the behavior by marking and rewarding it, therefore increasing the likelihood your dog offers the behavior in the future! But here is another fun tip: you can create offered behaviors by showing the dog the behavior back to back either via luring or pressure and release, eventually leaving your dog to assume the pattern of performing the behavior again. This guess at what is next, allows you to capture your dog giving you an offered behavior without any prompting! It is a quick and easy way to phase out your luring or pressure prompts, letting you quickly move on to naming the command. Give it a try with your pup! Make sure you use your marker and rewards!
