Introducing 𝗞𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻 𝗞𝗲𝗻𝘁, our 𝗕𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗖𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝘁 and the newest member of the ReviveK9 family! 🎓🐕

Kevin’s journey began with a plan to become a physical therapist, but his passion shifted when he discovered 𝗔𝗽𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀 (𝗔𝗕𝗔) at Georgia Southern University. He went on to earn his degree in experimental psychology and earned his 𝗕𝗖𝗕𝗔 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 at the University of South Florida, all while caring for his father during his battle with cancer.

After years of working as a BCBA in therapy centers, Kevin made an exciting transition into the world of dog training. Now, he’s building a program at ReviveK9 to train 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗺, combining his passion for helping kids with unique challenges and his expertise in behavior analysis.

The Truth About Punishment in Dog Training: It’s Not What You Think! 🧠🐾

When people hear the word "punishment," they often think of something harsh or abusive. But in psychology, 𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 simply refers to anything that decreases the likelihood of a behavior happening again. It's important to understand that 𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗴 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴—it’s about providing clear feedback.

🔍 𝗣𝘀𝘆𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗣𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁:
Punishment is the application or removal of a stimulus immediately following a behavior, with the goal of reducing that behavior in the future. There are two types:

1. 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Adding something the dog dislikes (e.g., a firm "no" or leash correction) to discourage unwanted behavior.
2. 𝗡𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗣𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁: Taking away something the dog enjoys (e.g., stopping playtime when the dog jumps) to reduce unwanted behavior.

⚖️ 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗡𝗢𝗧 𝗮𝗯𝘂𝘀𝗲—it’s simply how we, as humans and dogs, learn.

- 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝗴𝘀: If a dog jumps on guests, you could use 𝗻𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗽𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘀𝗵𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 by withholding attention (no pets or interaction) until the dog calms down. Over time, the dog learns that jumping doesn't get them what they want, and the behavior decreases.

- 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀: Think about when you're speeding and receive a ticket (a form of positive punishment). The addition of the ticket is meant to decrease the likelihood that you'll speed again in the future. Similarly, a child might lose screen time (negative punishment) for not completing homework, teaching them that the behavior leads to a consequence.

1️⃣ 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗧𝗼𝘆𝘀 – When your pup bites, offer a chew toy instead. This teaches them what’s acceptable to bite and keeps their teeth off you!

Maria’s love for animals began in Addison, IL, where she gained hands-on experience fostering and working in shelters. While pursuing her degree in Marine Biology at UWF, her life took a wonderful turn when she welcomed Oliver, a Neapolitan Mastiff, into her life. Offered Behaviors: What are they? An offered behavior is when your dog naturally performs a behavior without a lure or cue. You capture the behavior by marking and rewarding it, therefore increasing the likelihood your dog offers the behavior in the future! But here is another fun tip: you can create offered behaviors by showing the dog the behavior back to back either via luring or pressure and release, eventually leaving your dog to assume the pattern of performing the behavior again. This guess at what is next, allows you to capture your dog giving you an offered behavior without any prompting! It is a quick and easy way to phase out your luring or pressure prompts, letting you quickly move on to naming the command. Give it a try with your pup! Make sure you use your marker and rewards!
