Teaching your dog the 'Wait' command can keep them safe and give you better control in everyday situations, like:
🐾 Waiting at the door before heading outside.
🐾 Pausing before eating their meal.
🐾 Stopping before crossing the street.

Here’s how to teach it:

1️⃣ Start Simple: Ask your dog to sit. Hold up your hand and say “Wait” as you step slightly back.
2️⃣ Reward Quickly: If they stay in place, say “Yes!” and reward. If they move, calmly reset and try again.
3️⃣ Add Time & Distance: Gradually increase how long and how far you ask them to wait. Keep it short at first!
4️⃣ Practice in Real Life: Use it at doors, mealtimes, and on walks. Consistency builds reliability.

Imagine your dog calmly staying on their bed while guests arrive, during mealtime, or when you need a break. The ‘Place’ command can make this possible! It’s a game-changer for managing excitement and creating calm behavior.

Here’s how to start teaching it:

1️⃣ Find your Spot: We recommend using an elevated dog cot.
2️⃣ Introduce the Command: Guide your dog onto the spot using a treat and say “Place.” Reward them as soon as all four paws are on it.
3️⃣ Add Duration: Gradually increase the time your dog stays on the spot. Start with a few seconds and build up to minutes.
4️⃣ Practice Distractions: Once they’re confident, practice with mild distractions like walking around or knocking on a door. Always reward when they stay!

1️⃣ Use the Right Equipment – A martingale collar or slip lead offers better communication than a harness. It’s not about control—it’s about clarity!

2️⃣ Be a Tree – When your dog pulls, stop moving. Wait for slack in the leash before continuing. Pulling = no progress.

3️⃣ Reward Focus – Keep treats handy! When your dog checks in with you or walks nicely beside you, mark it with a “Yes!” and reward.

Your puppy is adjusting to a whole new world. Too much play or excitement can overwhelm them. Keep play sessions short (10-15 min) and provide plenty of quiet time for rest. Puppies need up to 20 hours of sleep daily!

Offered Behaviors: What are they? An offered behavior is when your dog naturally performs a behavior without a lure or cue. You capture the behavior by marking and rewarding it, therefore increasing the likelihood your dog offers the behavior in the future! But here is another fun tip: you can create offered behaviors by showing the dog the behavior back to back either via luring or pressure and release, eventually leaving your dog to assume the pattern of performing the behavior again. This guess at what is next, allows you to capture your dog giving you an offered behavior without any prompting! It is a quick and easy way to phase out your luring or pressure prompts, letting you quickly move on to naming the command. Give it a try with your pup! Make sure you use your marker and rewards!
