Doug’s before and after! The first two videos were sent in to show us Doug’s behavior at home - lots of reactivity to people and other dogs inside and outside of the home. Doug’s family was taking him for walks early in the morning or late at night to completely avoid running into anyone. He had damaged the walls and windows of the house during his reactive moments. Doug spent 5 weeks in Florida with us to learn obedience, build confidence, recondition his response to people and dogs, and expose him to the world. Under all the big scary barking was a really cool dog who just needed some help. At Doug’s go home lesson, I stressed to his owner the importance of implementing rules and structure into his daily life at home to keep him from backsliding. The rest of the clips are all updates I’ve received since Doug went home. His owner has done a phenomenal job so far maintaining structure and is getting to do things with Doug she’s never been able to previously. I hope everyone enjoyed seeing Doug’s journey while he was here, we try to show our process as much as possible. Ephie’s Journey! This week Ephie has started her life with her mom Jen as a diabetic alert dog! She’s the 10th of our C litter to go home with only 2 more to go. Ephie’s entire litter was imprinted on the scent of low blood sugar from a very early age and by tracking their scent reactions, we were able to pick the best puppies for scent related jobs. Ephie takes her job very seriously and upon meeting any new person, promptly starts checking their ankles and knees for the scent that she knows she will be rewarded for finding. Watching her transition to working for Jen this week has been really beautiful! We’ve kept this girl busy between airport travel, training sessions, and public access opportunities and she’s taken it all in stride. Skittles rocked her go home lesson at Lowes today! This girly came in lacking a lot of confidence, refusing to get in and out of the car, and a definite flight risk. Public outings like this will be part of her family’s homework to continue building her exposure and confidence in new environments. Foster dog Scooter and crate training! For the first few days that Scooter has been here, getting him in the crate has been a full blown wrestling match 😂 This morning I decided we were going to do crate games for his breakfast meal to start addressing the crate issue. Scooter is very food motivated which helps this process immensely BUT whenever we use food, there’s a lot to pay attention to. During training I always need to ask myself - “is the food creating the behavior?” OR “is the behavior creating the food?” The first option is where we start during the learning process, the second option is always our end goal so that dogs do not become reliant on those food rewards. Cooper’s 4 week board and train is coming to a close! At 7 months old, Cooper came in lacking confidence around new people and in new places. His owners had done everything they could to set him up for success by starting obedience and real life exposure at home before his board and train which put us in a great spot to get things done! I always tell people that sending your dog away for a board and train is like sending your kid to summer camp - they learn a ton, make a lot of friends, and sleep really good at night. Cooper’s program was all of the above! Despite some nerves he is very motivated to learn and is super intelligent. He’s made friends with everyone, earned off leash privileges, and enjoyed many field trips with us to set him up for success on future camping trips with his family! Charlie progress and a growth mindset mentality ➡️ This girly came to us from NJ with a lengthy handwritten list of needs and goals that included things like - “barks at everything, afraid of all sounds, literally only knows sit, goal to take her to public places, goal to stop pulling on the leash” etc. At our first trip to Lowe’s last week we were presented right away with a challenge of these massive Halloween decorations directly inside the front door and Charlie struggled. There was a lot of fear, some barking, and a few impressively strong attempts to drag me back out of the store. These clips were taken today, Charlie’s third time now at Lowe’s. You’ll see the progression from the first rep to the last and the growth that can come out of staying calm and staying the course. We started with a little bit of nerves and some pulling again but within a 15 minute time period she was heeling nicely past the decorations at the closest distance we’ve gotten to yet. She was also very willing to take food rewards today! A few store employees who have gotten to know Charlie and I even commented on her progress. Next up on our service dog go home list is 7 month old diabetic alert dog Ephie! I just introduced the scent wheel to her yesterday for the first time. Last night and this morning I asked Amanda to put the low sugar sample in one of the four containers so that neither Ephie nor I knew where it was. This helps give me a true read of her knowledge without any influence (whether intentional or not) from me. In the other three containers and empty tin cans with no sugar sample. Ephie found the correct container almost immediately! I knew the right thing to do was make her check all of them before asking Amanda to verify for me that she was correct, and then it’s a party!!
