Happy to see some baby Phelsuma standingi starting to pop up in my adult breeder enclosure. This is one of the few species of Day Gecko that will allow hatchlings to stay within their territory and even offer some protection from predation, due to their huge size difference. Once their juvenile banded pattern dissolves into their adult dotted form though all bets are off and aggression can commence.

Super productive few days at the lab!! I’ve been lucky enough to hatch 2 Phelsuma ornata, 2 lineata, 3 quadriocellata, 3 Lygodactylus williamsi, 1 kimhowelli and to top it off my second ever Phelsuma comorensis!! At this point I’m almost certain I have one of, if not the last breeding group of this species in the USA. I can remember back in the 90s seeing this once super abundant species at every reptile expo due to legal wild catching. Unfortunately, despite being a prolific species in captivity, captive numbers slowly decreased and wild caught specimens were no longer imported. This is the case for several Phelsuma species today, but it is my goal here at Gahagen Laboratories to keep as many Day Gecko species present in the American hobby through careful, selective captive breeding efforts.

While in South Africa (Limpopo Region, Northern South Africa) I got to see a ton of these guys, Cape Dwarf Geckos (Lygodactylus capensis). Found in a huge variety of habitats from scraggly bushes in the savanna grasslands to human dwellings, resort’s landscaping and larger buildings this species was incredibly versatile in habitat. Though incredibly bold around humans, they would bolt if I got too close (especially for photos..). I was incredibly lucky to be able to catch this male in the photo. Almost every specimen I encountered was in indirect sunlight or even complete shade. The outdoor temperatures during my visit varied from the high 70s F all the way to 106 F on the hottest day we were there with nighttime temps in the 60s. I even got to witness a territorial dispute between two males on the wall of a primary school building. It ended with one male chasing away the less dominant, with no violent interactions. Overall wild behavior was very similar to the four Lygodactylus species that are in the US pet trade that I’m currently working with and breeding. It is always reassuring to see members of a genus in the wild to compare behavior and physiology to their domestic counterparts. As reptile keepers I believe looking to nature and using biomimicry is the best way to push the industry forward towards a more ethical, as well as productive future.

Our 3 Prehensile-Tailed Skink pups aren’t so small anymore!! I was able to photo 2 of the 3 with the second photo having my hand for scale, much to the annoyance of the little guy… The entire circulus of adults (1.2) are still super protective and will frequently charge me while trying to clean and feed. Working with and breeding this species has been an absolute childhood dream come true.
