Q: What is Powell’s?
A: A very good boy.
JT is a 2 year old Maltese and we will be working on a few behaviors including a more reliable recall around distractions. We started by teaching a hand target. I just love how much JT loves training. His little spin of joy makes me laugh every time.

12 week old pittie puppy, Kali, added flare to her DOWN skill. Every time she laid down she made it her own by adding something a little extra.
She had us cracking up. She’s perfect.
I got spend time watching these two chicken nuggets wrestle and I felt it was only fair to share the adorable perfection with all of you.
Tali the 8 month old Landseer is a baby shark when she takes treats. We are working on that but in the meantime we are also teaching her how to catch treats which is another smart way to save your fingers and hands.
2022 was such a fun year at Rain or Shine Canine! I worked with some wonderful puppies and their amazing humans. I am so grateful to truly love what I do. Helping people build and strengthen their bond and communication with their best friend is so rewarding. Thank you to all of my wonderful clients! I also want to thank the fabulous positive reinforcement training community here in Portland that inspires and supports me in countless ways with a special shout to Pup Star Training Brooklyn Yard Veterinary Hospital Noble Woof Dog TrainingDog Adventures Northwest Whole Dog Academy Wishing everyone a very Happy New Year!
Powells had a benign cyst removed from his eyelid. He needs to wear a “cone of courage” (no shame here) for 10 days while it heals. We are leaning hard on an elevated enrichment routine to help prevent anxiety and depression. Dogs hate these collars so adding lots of positives their days of recovery can help brighten up a frustrating experience.
Quinn learned “Park it” today with the speed and ease of a baby genius!
She was calmly holding her implied stay on her mat with an expert level of duration, distraction and distance in record time. Every learner has different strengths and moves through training at the pace that’s best for them but it is still very fun to see a puppy that makes everything look easy, breezy.
She is a very cool doggo!
Dogs love novelty. But you don’t need to keep buying new food puzzles to keep things fresh. Try Googling “DIY dog enrichment” for endless ideas
and inspiration.
This puzzle took 5 minutes to make, about 15 minutes for Powells to complete, 30 seconds to clean up and just cost the price of treats.
If you’re worried about your dog eating the paper just make sure to supervise.
Every Sunday Powells and I make a batch of enrichment food items for the week.
It can be so helpful on a hectic day to be able to quickly grab an already prepared enrichment item for your dog when you need them to be quiet, occupied and happy while you focus on your pressing human nonsense.
Work-to-eat food puzzles provide animals with mental enrichment and licking is very calming for dogs. This whole batch takes about 10 minutes to throw together. I try to provide him with a daily enrichment experience like frozen food toy or shred box full of kibble and treats.
Isn’t he the most handsome assistant ever?!
Try adding some training and mental enrichment to your nature walks or hikes for a little extra fun.
I like to ask Powells for a “sit-stay” and then place multiple treats on rocks or tree barks…any nook or cranny will do. Then I say “Find it!” and let his amazing nose take over.
It’s one of his favorite games.
If your dog is still working on a reliable “stay” you can tether them or have someone else hold their leash while you place the treats.
