Remember in drought years we need to be vigilant in monitoring the nitrate levels in our forages. Drought causes the nitrogen to be elevated in the plant when considering how far it travels up into the plant and how much of it is in the plant. Some of the increased fertilizer applied to help grow more forage in the face of a drought can also increase levels. The most common types of forages that we see issues with are corn, Sudan, and Johnson grass but there are others to watch for as well. The nitrates can be in the grass, in the hay, or even in haylage or silage. The ensiling process does however decrease the amount of nitrates in the forage. Testing is readily available and can be done as a precaution. If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Update: After checking into it I found that the local feed stores have trouble getting the testing chemicals but if you call your local extension they usually have some availability or can get you in contact with someone that does. If not we can send a sample to the university.

The feed directive was put into place several years ago now by the FDA. This year in June (June 2023) they have decided that all medically important antibiotics will become prescription. This means that to buy medicated boluses, penicillin, tetracycline (LA200), etc you will have to have a prescription or buy it from your veterinarian. Just wanted to let everyone know to ensure that no one is caught off guard by the change. If you have any questions about this don’t hesitate to let us know.

Merry Christmas from our family to yours!!! May you spend precious time with your loved ones!!!
