Water remains as important for your horse in cold weather as it is in the summer. As a matter of fact, decreased water consumption in the winter is thought to be the primary inducing factor for impaction colic — although there are other predisposing factors such as poor hay quality, lack of exercise, internal parasites and dental problems.

Impaction colic is essentially constipation and most often includes the accumulation of hard, dry f***l material in the colon. The usual signs of impending impaction colic are depression, a decreased appetite, and decreased production and dryness of manure.

Studies demonstrate that you can increase your horse's winter water consumption if you provide access to heated water, but ONLY if that is the only source of water available. As always, if you have any questions about preventing colic in your horse, your equine veterinarian remains your best source of information!

It is Vet Tech Appreciation Week! We would like to recognize our wonderful technicians! 🤩🤩

Erin is our hospital coordinator “Erin is the pillar of our hospitalized patients. As the hospital coordinator, she insures that daily patient care and scheduled treatments are performed accordingly. Her attentiveness and empathy sets her apart from others…everyone needs an Erin in their practice. BVEH very grateful for her clinical intuition and dedication to patient care. Thank you Erin!!” - Dr. John Janicek

Tevan is a jack of all trades, whether he is treating our hospital patients, helping with emergencies, or working on a new maintenance project. He’s always ready for whatever comes next. We are so fortunate to have him as part of our hospital team.

Leigha shows up every day with a smile on her face and incredible work ethic. I know our in-patients are in great hands when Leigha is around. Her attention to detail is unmatched. BVEH is lucky to have her.

Rachel works hard every day to ensure we are prepared when after-hours emergencies arrive. She is always ready to take on a new task and learn new things about equine medicine. Rachel is a wonderful asset to the BVEH team.

We are excited to welcome our new hospital care team-members, Avril and Alexa.

Liz is one of our hard-working overnight technicians. She is always prepared for whatever walks through the door and is very attentive to our in-patients. BVEH is so lucky to have her on our team.

Melonn works hard to make sure our patients are well cared for, even in the wee hours of the night. She’s silly and full of energy, helping to keep everyone going during those late night emergencies. We are so lucky to have her.

Tana is our Pharmacy Manager “Pharmacy inventory is the second largest expense in equine medicine, so having a trustworthy person manage this portion of the hospital is critical. Our pharmacy manager is responsible for keeping the shelves appropriately stocked with medications and supplies necessary to treat anything that we encounter regardless of the time of day. Thank you Tana for your years of commitment to BVEH and controlling the requests of veterinarians and clients. Although you are behind the scenes of everything, your hard work is not taken for granted and is very much appreciated.” - Dr. John Janicek

Alex is our Lab Coordinator ”Talk about behind the scenes and able to pull off big feats. You forgot your Coggins expired? Didn’t know you needed a Piroplasmosis test? Or need a health certificate?…Alex is your gal. Alex oversees all in-house lab testing (too many to list) and regenerative medicine processing. She is the gatekeeper of all outside reference lab submissions and is responsible for making sure doctors receive their finalized lab results in a timely manner. Holding our veterinarians and reference labs accountable is her strong suit. Thank you Alex for always helping us solve the answers to our patients mysterious medical puzzle!” - Dr. John Janicek

We also want to extend a thank you to our wonderful front of house staff! With out you we could not do our jobs efficiently.

Kenzie and Adina are technicians for Dr. Whitaker “I feel super lucky to have the caliber of technicians we have here at BVEH. From excellent patient care to putting up with their crazy doctors, we really couldn’t do any of this without them. I don’t know what I would do without both of my technicians who put up with my bad jokes, keep me on schedule and organized, and doing it all with a smile (most of the time). We have some truly excellent, hard working staff who I enjoy getting to spend my days with. You are sincerely appreciated!” - Dr. Beau Whitaker

Shelby, Kaitlyn, and Liz are surgical technicians for doctor Janicek “Being able to depend on someone and know they are doing their job to its fullest potential with integrity is a trait that I expect in our surgery and anesthesia technicians. I cannot thank Shelby, Kaitlyn, and Elizabeth enough for all their dedication, long days and late nights in the O.R., and keeping the daily grind under control. Our surgical successes and advancements are because of their commitment to our equine patients. Hats off to y’all and thank you very much.” - Dr. John Janicek

About BVEH

Brazos Valley Equine Hospitals was founded in 1987 by Dr. “T-Bone” Buchanan. “T-Bone” never saw caring for a horse as a case-by-case approach. Rather he saw it as relationship-by-relationship, year-over-year. His passion for healing horses was coupled with a desire to foster a long-term relationship of trust with the owners that created the best possible environment for horses to succeed in. His dedication and love for the equine industry has led the practice to develop multiple facilities across Texas, including Navasota, Stephenville, Salado, and Cypress. As one of the largest practices in the state of Texas, our hospitals’ feature sports medicine, reproduction, and alternative medicine experts along with board-certified specialists’ in internal medicine, surgery emergency, and critical care.
