- Meet Koko! -

Koko is a rescue pup with and she’s joined the DU team for a 4 week board and train ! Koko came from a very horrendous hoarding case as a pup and is now a spicy teenager. She is so incredibly sweet but is reactive on leash and has some teenage feelings. She has already adjusted well, and she is so incredibly smart. We have very high hopes for this girl and can’t wait to get to work!

PNW Cattle Dog Rescue invests a lot in training into their foster dogs, and Koko is just one of them. They NEED donations to help sponsor her board and train. They have been hit hard with surprise medical bills, and despite a deep rescue discount, a 4 week board and train is still an investment. Please consider donating to help cover her training costs!

Stay tuned for updates!

- Meet Leroy! -

Leroy is a rescue pup with and he’s joined the DU team for a 3 week board and train! Leroy was a street dog turned rescue dog, and once arriving to Oregon, it was clear he needed a solid behavior assessment for possible separation distress. This boy loves HARD and is the sweetest boy. He has done very well his first week, adjusting to routines, and doing fantastic with trial separations. Despite his street dog tendancies, he is super eager to learn and very handler focused. He now walks well on leash, recall is improving, and knows lots of new cues like sit, lay down, drop it, and a positive interrupter (kissy noise) when he’s getting into mischief or an ask for focus. He has a fantastic temprament and does well with kiddos and other dogs.

He is such a sweet boy and we know his forever home is out there! The next couple weeks we’ll be working on lengthening his separations and more advanced obedience and cues (dare we say, he may be a Canine Good Citizen candidate?).

Oftentimes we see a board and train as a fantastic opportunity for a “routine reset” for some dogs and a great opportunity for an owner or rescue to get a detailed behavior assessment in a home setting. While many behaviors can’t be fully resolved in the length of a board and train, it gives the pup a solid training foundation, and the humans a solid understanding of their dog.

While we offer a significant rescue discount, the rescue still invested in this boy to be set up on the right paw, and any donations to the rescue are greatly appreciated.

- Beware of Trigger Stacking: Take it easy this week -

Did you know after a traumatic or stressful event like the 4th, it can take up to 72 hours or more for cortisol levels to return to normal? Take it easy with your pup this week with lots of decompression activities.

🐾 Frozen Topples & Licky Mats - We love to use cottage cheese, peanut butter, canned dog food, pumpkin, egg, banana, and so much more! Layering different flavors and textures, like a parfait, can keep your pup interested!

🐾 Natural and safe chews like Yak chews or bully sticks

🐾 Enrichment like a sniffle mat, etc

🐾 Calming treats: The two listed are our faves!

🐾 Decompression hikes and walks - Let your dog sniff!

🚨 Make sure you keep your dog on a leash or indoors during peak firework time and the next 72 hours
🚨 Double check your dog has up to date tags on their collar
🚨 Microchip your pup!

If you find a stray dog, try to keep it contained and scan for a microchip. This is the WORST time of year for our local shelters, so try to hold onto them if you can and post in local lost pet fb groups, PawBoost, and Nextdoor.

- Wednesday’s Training Tip of the Week: Let Your Dog Sleep! -

Sleep and naps are absolutely vital for our pups but can often be missed during puppihood and adolescence, which can cause an overtired cranky pup!

Signs your dog isn’t getting enough sleep/relaxation:
🐾 Excessive vocalization or mouthiness
🐾 Restlessness
🐾 Humping/self soothing behaviors
🐾 Short fuse/ cranky baby!

So how much sleep should your pup be getting daily?

Puppies + Seniors: 18-20 hours
Adolescents: 16-18 hours
Adults: 14-16 hours

Wow that’s a lot of sleep! On average your pup should be sleeping 9-12 hours at night with several naps during the day.

So what do you do if your pup is lacking sleep?

🐾 Crate training and structured naps can be vital for puppihood and adolescents. Just like human toddlers and teenagers - they can forget to sleep!
🐾 Practice sleep hygiene and have a routine around naps. Give a chew or passive enrichment to help them wind down for naptime or bedtime. Keep the area dark and quiet or even a noise machine to cue sleep time.
🐾 Decrease the high arousal play during the day if your pup has a hard time sleeping.
🐾 Add more passive enrichment in your pups life to reinforce rest and relaxation!

Wednesday says follow these sleep guides for a couple weeks and you’ll be amazed how many problem behaviors disappear!

- Why the “A” and “D” words give us the ick -

The term “Alpha” and “Dominance” are largely outdated terms and meaningless in dog behavior, but we still see them floating around, along with the occasional “H” heirarchy.

Pack theory has long been debunked, even by its own theorist, but those that don’t know how to describe behavior tend to cling onto these terms. When someone comes to us and say their dog is being “dominant” or “he’s just the alpha” our follow up question is always “What’s the behavior?” Every dog is an individual and by using these blanket terms, it can really hinder our understanding of our pup!

Instead of pack theory, look at behavior through an ABC lens - Antecedent, Behavior, and Consequence. An antecedent is the condition or factors that lead to a behavior, such as cuing a dog to sit. Sitting is the behavior, and the consequence could be that the pup gets a treat!

Consequence is a neutral term and can be mean something good or bad, and is where we tend to find the four quadrants (positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, negative punishment, and positive punishment).

Using an ABC lens we can both train, describe, and learn a lot more about our dog. Labels like “alpha” or “dominant” not only lead to outdated punitive punishments but can hinder our ability to understand our pup companions, deteriorate relationships, and possibly lead to detrimental fallout and miscommunications.

Stay ABC curious!

- There is a fantastic training opportunity when trying to take a good 📸 of your pup! -

While anyone can snap a photo of their dog, sometimes (many times) a little bit of training can really help make your pup pop!

Tips (that also apply to any training session):

✅ Make sure your pup has had only half their meal so they’re itching to work
✅ 15-20 mins or exercise beforehand can make the world of difference
✅ Before you pick up the camera, practice some mark and reward focus games to know your pup is ready to work!

Great skills to build and work on during a photo sesh:

✅ Luring and capturing, such as luring to face the camera and capturing a sit or down stay
✅ Impulse control (to not grab the treat, to not get up with funny noises to make their ears perk, to not sniff the camera, to not smother you with kisses or jump on you when you get low/eye level, etc)
✅ Prolonged sit and lay down
✅ Calmness
✅ Attentiveness

Having a hard time getting a good photo? Try these warm up tips and skill building pointers above before even picking up the camera! Not only will it help your pup with these key skills, but you’ll end up with a great photo.

Cocomo (pictured) is currently in a board and train with Anna of and she’s learning all the basics as she arrived with little to no skills. She is just such a sweetheart and loves people and she’s available for foster or adoption through

- Wednesday’s Reminder: Take your dog on a Sniffari! -

What is a Sniffari? A Sniffari is when you take your dog to an old or new place and let your dog explore and sniff! Our world can be so limiting for a dog, and a Sniffari is a great way to let a dog be a dog, while providing enrichment.

What are the benefits of a Sniffari?

🐾 Sniffing promotes opimism and calmness
🐾 Sniffing can lower heart rate and decrease stress
🐾 Disecting and processing smells (especially in a new area) is enriching and energy intensive
🐾 Fantastic mental exercise and to get your dog mentally tired while providing a physical outlet

Sniffaris have so many benefits and even implementing on one-hour Sniffari a week can make a world of difference in your dog’s ability to settle and be calm (bonus points if it’s a new area!).

Wednesday says get outside and let your dog sniff!

- The Most Underrated + Expensive Piece of Dog Training: TIME! -

I’m ready to say the quiet part out loud - Compassion Fatigue is real, and has hit me hard!

We have been in business for over two years - with so much success and some amazing and memorable clients (in dog and human form), it’s time for us to become selective of our client intake to protect our emotional energy.

We are looking for clients who are dedicated and are willing to put the time and work into their dogs (and do the homework). We are looking for clients that are looking to us as experts to guide them with an open mind. We are looking for clients that look at problems and their dogs from holistic point of view. We are looking for knowledge seekers, problem solvers, and those that genuinely want to learn more about their dog.

We are science based trainers rooted in the latest techniques, implementing pattern games, counterconditioning, desensitization, but also bringing a “whole picture” point of view of your dog and what drives behavior.

We are implementing a “commitment promise” in our application process. Time is expensive - and tends to be the driving force of success. How much you put into your dog is a driving force of what you get out.

Driving factors of success include:
🐾 Genetics
🐾 Previously learned and rehearsed behaviors and length of rehearsal
🐾 Level of resiliency and frustration tolerance of the dog
🐾 Consistency
🐾 Effort and precision of training plan
🐾 Environmental factors
🐾 Biological factors
🐾 And More!

Anna has been continually nominated as one of the best dog trainers in Oregon by clients and by Sniffspot, has thousands of hours in behavior modification and dog training, from basic (mis)behaviors to severe reactivity and innerhousehold aggression.

Our prices will reflect our head trainer’s experience, expertise in behavior modification, and knowledge. More virtual options will be available to find some cost savings - Stay tuned!
