🎃🐾 Tips for Managing a Reactive Dog on Halloween🐾🎃

Halloween can be a tricky time for our furry friends, especially for those who are reactive to the sounds and sights of trick-or-treaters. Here are some tips to help keep your dog calm and safe:

1. **Create a Safe Space:** Set up a comfortable area in your home where your dog can retreat. Use their bed or a crate, and add some toys or blankets for comfort.

2. **Desensitize Beforehand:** If your dog is reactive, try playing Halloween sounds (like doorbells or kids’ laughter) at a low volume. Gradually increase the volume over several days to help them acclimate.

3. **Manage the Environment:** Use curtains or shades to block the view of the door. This can help reduce visual triggers.

4. **Provide Distractions:** Give your dog some special treats or a favorite toy to keep them occupied during peak trick-or-treating hours.

5. **Consider Baby Gates:** If your dog is overly reactive, set up a baby gate to keep them in a secure area while still allowing them to feel included in the home.

6. **Keep Them Leashed:** If you’re in a high-traffic area, keep your dog on a leash when you answer the door to prevent any escapes.

7. **Plan Ahead:** If your dog is particularly anxious, talk to your vet about medications. A couple great over the counter remedies are Composure Calm and pure cbd oil. Also taking them for a walk, training or playing to help them burn off energy can help with a better experience for when the trick or treaters come by.

8. **Skip the Trick-or-Treating:** If your dog is especially reactive, it might be best to avoid opening the door to trick-or-treaters altogether. You can leave a sign on your door indicating that you’re not participating (feel free to save and print our attached flyer!), or set up a quiet area away from the front of the house.

Remember, it’s okay to prioritize your dog’s comfort. Happy Halloween to all, and let’s keep our furry friends safe and stress-free! 🐶💕

There is always a reason for your dog’s behavior, but it’s not because he/she is being stubborn or purposely naughty. Whether it’s fear, pain, feeling unsafe, not understanding the cue, being over threshold, or something else, your dog has a very good reason for either not responding in the way that you want or for behaving “badly” (in your opinion). Assuming that they are purposely not following your direction is not helpful and fails to address what your dog is really experiencing. Until we do that, we will not be able to help them and change their behavior. So, take a moment to figure out what your dog is telling you. It will always be worth it.

I am often accused of avoiding training, when I hide my reactive dog behind a tree or a car, as another dog passes, but in reality I am trying to ensure we continue to progress with training. Not every situation or environment is conducive to learning. In order, to ensure training is successful, we need to prevent opportunities for the behaviour to be practiced, between structured sessions to modify the behaviour. If we don't implement management and we allow our dog to go over their coping threshold and display reactive behaviour, it hinders training progress, regardless of how well the sessions are going. It can be a case of one step forwards and three steps back.

Therefore, if a dog is off-lead, if the dog's proximity is too close or the environment is too distracting, I will avoid that dog, block my dog's vision or lead him away with an emergency cue and treat. I will wait until the circumstances and environment are safe and appropriate for training. Doing this, prevents trigger stacking and ensures my dog is beginning to build up a history of positive experiences with other dogs. Other management for reactive behaviour may include:

- Choosing walking environments carefully.
- Avoiding busy times for dog walkers.
- Blocking visuals in the window or door in the home.
- Eliminating stressors where possible.
- Increasing the distance between your dog and others.
- Changing direction or routes to avoid dogs.
- Scatter feeding as a distraction.
- Having breaks from walks.
- Providing enrichment for decompression.

Management comes in many forms and should be used to address a variety of behavioural struggles. It is a necessary part of training and behaviour modification. Its why we call it 'the magic of management.' It is not the avoidance of training but the preservation of progress! - Holly Leake

I love a cheeky dog, a dog so secure that they know they are safe enough to shine just as they are. I also love guardians who advocate for and protect their dogs from physical, psychological and emotional harm.
