While volunteering for the Oregon State Beekeepers Association bee booth at the yesterday, Jeremy found a varroa mite (Varroa destructor) that fell from the observation hive. He used a microscope at the neighboring master meletologist booth to zoom in on the parasitic mite. Check out the photos! Also, check out the LIVE mite he captured now on display at the bee booth!

December bees are among the hardiest of bees! They withstand the cooling temperature as winter sets in. Winter bees can live several months, which is a long time compared to their spring and summertime sisters who only live an average of 4-6 weeks.

We had a great time organizing the 2023 Oregon State Beekeepers Association fall conference this year! We had record attendance and raised a record amount of money for bee research. Nearly $50,000 was raised and we couldn't be more proud to have been a huge part of it all.

We are also excited to have been able to provide honey for the Honey Tasting workshop and extatic to be the proud new owners of an original George Hansen encausic painting!

We couldn't have done it without the MANY hard-working volunteers from the Central Oregon Beekeeping Association. THANK YOU to all the beekeeping associations around Oregon and to all the beekeepers who attended this year for helping us pull off a memorable conference! πŸ’›πŸ

We have seen a lot of questions about how to know when the nectar dearth is happening. The bees' temperment is one indicator. The ladies get a little cranky when they're stressed from lack or nectar flows. 🐝🐝
