Training Program
Disciplines: All Around, Hunter Under Saddle, Western Pleasure, Trail, Showmanship, English Equitation, Horsemanship, Western Riding, Futurities, Lounge Line
Program Includes: Horses receive full time training; all riding lessons are included with no extra charge. My goal is for each horse to perform at their best so all care is designed to tailor to each horse’s needs. Any spec
ial instructions or needs are gladly followed. My training program is designed individually to accentuate each horse’s natural talent and fit the needs and goals of their rider. I have dedicated my time to learning as many different training approaches as possible because I have seen from experience that what works for one horse may not work for the next horse. I don’t approach training with a mindset that my way is the best way, I keep my program open to new approaches and continued learning to follow the industry standards set by AQHA. Another aspect I incorporate into my program is to prepare the horse to fit the needs of their rider. I spend a lot of time working with each rider. By getting to know each rider, their strengths and weaknesses, I am able to prepare each horse in a way that will make that team as successful as possible. In most cases horses are very willing to please and it is my job to teach them the desired response. Horses learn by repetition, which is why I spend a lot of time on each horse until it is second nature for the horse to perform the action I am requesting. One of my favorite parts of training is to accentuate each horse’s movement to the best of their ability. I do this by; teaching each horse to distribute their weight correctly, teaching body control, teaching the horse to drive from behind and step underneath themselves, carry a level topline, and to hold themselves up with a soft slow stride. I am excited to meet new customers! You may contact me with any questions or schedule a free lesson with me to see if my program is a good fit for you! Meet the Trainer: Laura Satern
I grew up in Silverton, OR where I spent most of my childhood at the barn covered in dirt, horse hair, and sweat; loving every minute! I started riding at age 10 and horses quickly became my life passion. I got a job working at a local riding stable and began learning from Karmen Cook about what it takes to be a true horseman. Excited to pursue a career in the equine industry, I attended Oregon State University and Graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Sciences (Equine Option) in 2010. While in college I showed at local AQHA shows and took a job managing a boarding facility for Linda Heintzman. After college, I knew I needed to gain training experience from high level AQHA trainers to reach the standards that I have set for myself. So I packed my bags and moved to Minnesota to work for BMQ Quarter Horses and then as an assistant trainer for Jason Hagberg for 2 years. There I learned how to train and manage a program that is successful at the national level. All the while, dedicating my time to absorbing as much knowledge and experience as possible by attending clinics from some of the industry’s top trainers such as: Charlie Cole, Tim Kimura, Robin Frid, Dawn Baker, Stephine Lynn, Bonnie Minor and others. My hard work and dedication has paid off in the show pen, coaching riders to top placing at some of the largest shows in the nation such as: All American Quarter Horse Congress finalists, multiple riders ranking top 10 in the nation, Circuit Champions, and Year-end All around Champions. My husband and I decided that it was time to move back to Oregon to be closer to family and begin my lifelong dream of running my own training business. The goal of Satern Show Horses is to produce successful polished horse and rider teams by providing excellent training, top of the line care, and a fun family environment. My faith is very important to me and I want Satern Show Horses to exemplify a love for others by treating people with honesty, respect, and using ethical training practices. I also believe that because we ask our horses to perform at such a high level they deserve the best care. Each horse is treated like an athlete. My training program and daily care will cater to each horse’s individual needs to ensure that the horse will be able to perform for many years to come.
