In celebration of the release of Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, Disney continues its longstanding commitment to conservation by collaborating with the Wildlife Conservation Network’s (WCN) Lion Recovery Fund (LRF) to increase awareness and support their vision to double the lion population in Africa by 2050.

Since Disney’s The Lion King first premiered 30 years ago, Africa’s lion population has dropped by half, with only 20,000 lions remaining from a population of 200,000 a century ago. The time to act is now.

Rolling Hills Zoo is proud to support this vital mission to protect lions and their habitats, which in turn helps safeguard the health of the savanna, its wildlife, and the communities who share these landscapes.

This mission involves:
1. Stopping the loss: Protecting lions, their prey, and their habitats.
2. Reducing the cost: Minimizing the burden on people living alongside lions.
3. Unlocking the value: Magnifying the cultural, economic, and ecological benefits lions and their landscapes bring.

Join us in raising awareness for this critical cause and help ensure a future where lions can thrive.

🌻⚠️ Sunflower Summer Families, We Need Your Help!⚠️🌻

The Sunflower Summer Program is in jeopardy for 2025 due to potential funding issues. Your voice CAN make a difference!

Here's how you can help:
1️⃣ Contact your Kansas legislators in Topeka ASAP and share how much this program means to your family.

2️⃣ If you’re a business owner (hotel, restaurant, retail shop, gas station), let them know how Sunflower Summer brought additional families and revenue to your community.

📣 Legislators on the Appropriations Committee and Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee, as well as your local representatives, want (and NEED) to hear how Sunflower Summer has positively impacted YOU!

👉 Visit www.rollinghillszoo.org/sunflower-summer for the Sunflower Summer Impact Sheet and direct contact info for these key legislators.

Your voice matters! Together, we can help ensure Sunflower Summer 2025 continues to bring joy and opportunity to Kansas families and communities.

Let’s keep the sunshine going! 🌞

Kengele, our curious white rhino, got a frosty surprise for his daily enrichment - a mound of snow! After a thorough sniff and a little push test (gotta make sure it’s up to rhino standards 🧐), he couldn’t resist moving on to one of his favorite play things - a tire!

Kengele loves to show off by placing the tire on his horn, and honestly, it’s adorable. Don’t miss the silly snapshot of Kengele with his horn-tire combo, which will be posted on our Instagram!

📸: Huge thanks to Keeper Kennedy Mick for capturing this fun moment!

Do you know about the bald eagles' amazing wildlife comeback story?

Their population faced a decline not too long after being adopted as the national symbol in 1782. Bald eagles were considered marauders of chicken and livestock, and because of that, they were targeted and killed, leading to a population decline.

The Bald Eagle Protection Act in 1940, and its later amendment in 1962 with the Bald & Golden Eagle Protection Act, helped aid their recovery. In 2007, they were delisted from the Endangered Species Act, but remain protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Both laws prohibit killing, selling, or otherwise harming eagles, their nests or eggs.

This is Bensar, Rolling Hills Zoo's majestic bald eagle. Can you believe he’s 32 years old? While bald eagles usually live 15-25 years in the wild, under the care of humans, they can reach up to 50 years old. Bensar is a wonderful reminder of what’s possible with dedicated, quality care!
