Heather Acheson, the director of Golden Belt Humane Society - Great Bend, Ks, asked us if we wanted to partner with her, Hutchinson Animal Shelter, Pratt Area Humane Society, and Salina Animal Services, to help share each other's long term residents in hopes of getting them adopted sooner! We thought this was a great idea so here goes!

We are posting Sir Harvey on behalf of Golden Belt Humane Society - Great Bend, Ks!

Sir Harvey, a Labrador Mix Breed type, came to the shelter on January 31st, 2024. This lovable pup is approximately 2 and a half years old and has a cheerful and friendly personality. He enjoys meeting new people and other dogs, always getting very excited about it! While he hasn't met any cats yet, we believe he will get along just fine with them. Sir Harvey is already familiar with sitting and is currently learning how to walk nicely on a leash. He is looking for a home with plenty of space to run and play, where he can also work on his basic training. He would truly thrive with someone who will snuggle with him at bedtime. Sir Harvey has been fully vetted, including vaccinations, neutering, heartworm testing, monthly preventatives, and microchipping.

AFTERNOON FOLLOWERS!!

We are partnering with Hutchinson Animal Shelter, Pawnee County Humane Society, Inc., Pratt Area Humane Society and Salina Animal Services in hopes to help each other’s long term stay dogs find new, forever loving homes! 🥰

I, Director Acheson reached out to the shelters asking if they would like to share/advertise each other’s longest stay dogs in hopes to get them out sooner than later! I’ve watched Pratt struggle with a few long term dogs over the last 6 months to a year and Salina, has been stuck with some super cool pit type dogs forever! We even transferred one in from them, Pickles Eugene, but even in Great Bend, he just couldn’t land himself a home. 😞 So, for him and three other dogs we were having a hard time placing, they were transferred to the Hutchinson shelter. Excited and happy to report all four were adopted with in two weeks of arriving!

This nationwide crisis is not going away so we are doing what we can and hope it will open up many opportunities fir each of the shelters - showing support of one another as it’s all about the dogs.🐕 🐶 🐩

We will be sharing ours with all of them to list on their pages as well, so be prepared to view some amazing and beautiful dogs waiting for homes with you!

Arrived to the Pratt shelter on 6-13-23 and here is a snippet from the staff:

Sweet Arce! This stunning boy has been here over a year!!! He has grown up in the shelter, coming in at 6 months and now over a year, he is a smooth collie mix. He is a big boy, and needs someone who can help him remember how big he is! He is good with people and most cats and dogs. He would love a home with room to run and them a nice person to cuddle up with at the end of the day. Arce is full vetted including vaccinations, neutered, and microchipped. The Salina Animal Shelter is currently experiencing a round of kennel cough in our facility. A stray dog brought into the facility before the holiday weekend may have been the cause of the outbreak. We are pausing adoptions, surrenders and stray intakes for all dogs to help prevent a spread of this air borne illness. All dogs are given a Bordetella vaccine upon intake to our facility but like all vaccines they are not 100% effective.
Shelter protocol for dogs with kennel cough, also known as Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex (CIRDC), should include isolation, cleaning, and treatment. These are the steps we are taking at the Salina animal Shelter:
Isolation
Isolate positive cases in a separate room, or at a vet hospital if no isolation room is available. Quarantine exposed dogs for 14 days after treatment begins, or until they are no longer contagious.
Cleaning
Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, gowns, and shoe covers when coming into contact with a suspected animal or entering isolation. Disinfect contaminated items like bowls, toys, and bedding using a dishwasher, washing machine, or hot water.
Treatment
Treatment is usually symptomatic and supportive, and may include antibiotics, maintaining hydration and nutrition, and minimizing excitement. More severely affected dogs may need more aggressive treatment, such as hospitalization or oxygen support.

Our dogs will have a follow up visit with the shelter veterinarian on 7-25-2024. We will have more information following this secondary examination.
