“My brother-in-law’s father had never shot a bear in his life, so my brother and I baited a spot for him. On opening night, he connected with this 200-pound boar. Within 8 days of the hunt, he was mounted and hanging on the wall to dry.”

Taxidermy Tip Tuesday!

This week’s tip comes from Tech Vincent Fleming, and it’s one you’ll want to save!

If you’re working on a deer (or any animal) with a cut behind the eye or an area with very little hair, try mounting without sewing. Pull the cut together, use hide paste to hold it in place, and let it dry smooth and flush.

Once it’s ready for finishing, repair with Apoxie Sculpt—just skip the water. Use Safety Solvent or thinner instead to smooth it out. Then, dust the area with a bit of shop dust for texture and finish with Pan Pastels for a perfect color match.

Vincent says he has mounts over 20 years old that still look flawless using this method. Proof that small tricks make a lasting difference.
