Fire Damages Pocomoke City Wood Products Plant:

Early this morning, a fire of unknown origin caused significant damage to the Eastern Shore Forest Products mill in Pocomoke City. The mill produces animal bedding products, including wood shavings for the poultry and livestock industries along with bedding and energy pellets. Tom Johnson, President of the company, noted there were no injuries and that rebuilding would begin immediately. “We’re just thankful no one was hurt and we really appreciate the efforts of all the firefighters who responded. It’s a setback, but we’ve had contingency plans for just such a disaster including standby, spare equipment and we have a great team to get it all back running again.” “We believe we can be back with limited production later this week and should return to full production within two weeks, although completely replacing what we lost will take time.” Much of what burned was a warehouse complex where shavings were stored and prepared for shipment. “We don’t anticipate any lay-offs, curtailments of log deliveries or failure to meet any of our obligations to employees, customers, landowners or contractors,” Johnson said. “Again, we’d like to thank all those who helped fight the blaze. Without their brave efforts, the loss could have been much greater.”
